  • #BorgonReviews - Games - "The Last of Us"

This week I want to review three items to make up for not making reviews the past two weeks. First up is 'The Last of Us' which is a game you've probably already heard about. If you haven't, the game is a development of Naughty Dog. It is set in a post-apocalyptic Earth. Zombies have plagued the world and the remaining humans have had to adapt to survive. In the game you mainly play as Joel, and through his eyes you can experience different aspects of the new order: the military, rebel groups like the Fireflies, and the side of the people trying to survive.

There are many aspects of this game which make it such an incredible experience. First of all, the characters. Probably one of the things that can make or break a game are its protagonists, and make it they do in this case. There is such an underlying level of character development between other characters and even themselves that by the end of the game you really feel like you, as the player, can connect to them. To exemplify this I will use three characters. I will do my best to uphold my 'no spoilers' policy so bear with me. First of the three is the main character who has already been mentioned, Joel. He is definitely the one that has the most development throughout the game. You get enough insight into his past that it feels like you really know him. The thing I loved about this character that it isn't the typical one you just love or hate throughout the entire game. In fact, none of the characters in the story are. There were times when you felt Joel's pain and worried for him, yet there were others when you just wanted to take a shiv and stick it in his neck. The second character is Tess, whom I won't say much about for those that haven't played the game. She's introduced as the typical ****** girl, but once again she develops and there comes a point when you realize she is so much more. Her reactions to everything, along with her emotions, made me really see the world of the game as a real place where horrible things happen. Finally, you have Ellie who is the co-protagonist of the game. She is an orphan who was born after the apocalypse started, so already you know her character is something else. She really does grow on you, and she is the one who moves the game forward. At one point she tells a story of her friend and her, which solidifies the idea that she has been through a lot and still tries to keep a smile on her face. Joel's hard character and Ellie's more relaxed, yet still harsh, nature balance each other out. By the end of the game, you come to know the character's so well you can even guess what they will do next.

The moods and themes in the game are another wonderful aspect about it. I just want to point out that the game's graphics are gorgeous, and they work incredibly well with the sound effects and music to make you feel scared, gleeful, and even tired at times. It is a near flawless part of what makes The Last of Us so memorable. As for the themes, I will just say it is one of those games that make you ask yourself what could be life-changing questions and leave you thinking, even after it's over.

The gameplay was also highly enjoyable. It had some tiring and repetitive factors by the end of it, but the story made up for them. I will say, though, that if you don't enjoy stealthing your way through situations in a game, there will be points in this one in which you feel like punching the TV. Still, the fighting was entertaining, fluid, and blood-pumping. The sneaking around, which I just mentioned, also brought an extra sense of thrill to the game. Overall, well done.

    Overall Opinion
The Last of Us is an amazing game. I loved every moment of it. The characters are easy to relate to, real, and well developed. The dialogue and voice-acting is also amazing. It has a story like no other zombie game I've ever played and the themes are very deep. The graphics, like I said, are beautiful and the sounds and music work very well. The gameplay can be tedious at times, and becomes repetitive, specially if it is your second time playing it or if you play it nonstop from start to finish (trust me), but is still very enjoyable. Overall this is one of the best games I've played and for all the reasons I mentioned above I thoroughly enjoyed it and really recommend you play it somehow if you haven't already.
My overall rating is 9 out of 10 BorgBalls.
You can compare my rating to IGN's perfect 10/10, Metacritics 95%, and GameSpot's 8 out of 10.

I hope you enjoyed my review. Please rate it and tell me what you thought of it, it really helps out. Also please tell me if you enjoyed the game as much as I do, or, if you haven't played it tell me if you're thinking of buying it. You can also suggest items for me to review later on down in the replies below. Thanks!
