  • #BorgonReviews - Books - "PLAY" by Javier Ruescas

Hey! This time I'm changing things up a little with my review. I've decided to review a book in Spanish. I know you guys might not understand it, or only partially, but if you do it's a good choice and you could totally recommend it to your Spanish teacher. The book is PLAY, and it is written by author Javier Ruescas. The book centers on two different points of view. The two main characters are brothers Leo and Aaron, who are entirely different from each other. They have different goals and expectations of life, but one thing Aaron has is a talent with music, and that is something Leo is willing to take advantage of. A video is posted on YouTube with Leo singing playback of one of Aaron's songs, and things blow up. Aaron finds out and decides to help his brother be famous, but it all changes when Develstar shows up with a contract and the offer of a trip to the USA. The story follows the brothers' adventure overseas and shows that things will never be the same.

PLAY is a great book no matter how old you are. The plot is very interesting and entertaining, enough that you won't put down the book. The characters make it both fun and deep, specially when you get the point of view of two people that have such a different perspectives. Throughout the book you realize it is not so much about the music, as it is about the people. The themes the book delves into might appear light and joyous, but if you think it through there are underlying messages with a deeper meaning within them. Not to mention, the book has some very interesting concepts and ideas I hadn't seen before. It's not all about teenage love, like many modern novels seem to be. I specially love the fact that at the beginning of every chapter there is a small snippet of different song lyrics.

    Overall Opinion
PLAY is a great book in spanish, and one that will certainly keep you entertained. Some concepts are in spanish from Spain, which sometimes is even weird for me, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem. The story is very entertaining, the characters are interesting, and there is more to the themes and ideas than you first think. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who knows/is trying to learn the language.
My final rating is 8 out of 10 BorgBalls.
You can compare my score to GoodReads' 4.01/5.

I hope you liked the review. Rate it and comment on your thoughts/opinions, and if you do read the book please let me know what you thought of it. Do you read books in other languages? Let me know in the replies below!
