Name: Ishta Falaq
Gender: female
Age: 29
Race: Gerudo
Occupation/Class: cook
Appearance:
Ishta isn’t as well built as most of her sisters, lacking the very obviously toned muscles. She is still visibly strong, a necessity for the harsh lifestyle of the desert. However, her profession as a cook has left her with a bit of a belly. Her skin is still as tawny as her sisters, with a few small scars on her hands from grabbing too hot cooking implements. She knows her extra height, about average for a Gerudo, still towers over many Hylians, so her lips are usually curved in a smile, adding to the warmth of her golden eyes. Her red hair reaches to the bottom of her shoulder blades, but she usually wears this in a tight mermaid’s tail braid to ensure none of it ends up in whatever she’s preparing. This style partially obscures the tattoo across her upper back: each symbol of the races of Hyrule linked in a heavy chain with the Triforce in the center.
She wears the traditional clothes of her village: a white sirwal and bandeau, both decorated with traditional Gerudo markings. These are cool enough to wear in the heat of the desert or by her cooking fire, but she also keeps an aquamarine cloak for when she needs to wrap up. She prefers to wear golden shoes that lack the higher heels her sisters wear. Around her waist is an aquamarine sash, from which hangs the scimitar that she is never without. She wears no jewelry or other adornments, save one: a necklace comprised of a simple cord from which hang seven smooth stones, each a different color and carved with a symbol for the Seven Heroines. In the back, the cord reaches further down so an eighth smooth stone hangs at the base of her neck, a silent determination to pay homage to all eight heroines.
Equipment:
In addition to her scimitar, Ishta’s sash has a few small knives, specifically for use while cooking. Her pack contains jars and small pouches of various spices and other ingredients that she always keeps on hand. Hanging from one side of the pack is a skillet; from the other, a pot.
Personality:
Ishta is normally a cheerful Gerudo, nearly always smiling or whistling. She’s not overtly friendly, however, never volunteering her thoughts. She is also, like most Gerudo, leery and mistrustful of voe, but since most of her business comes from them, she tries to hide this. She keeps an eye on them until they leave her facility though, one hand on her scimitar, the other touching the different stones of her necklace. She is quick to react if she sees any kind of altercation begin to escalate, promptly ejecting all parties involved from the premises. Conversely, she’s almost motherly with any vai she interacts with, even ones clearly older than her. Knowing how proud vai can be, especially her sisters, she will attempt to limit this to a hearty meal and perhaps a hot drink. Proud of her culinary skills, she’ll make a show of preparing meals, sometimes using her scimitar to chop fruit and vegetables that she had tossed up. Despite all her own reservations, Ishta is convinced that the various races and factions of Hyrule can once again live in peaceful unity.
Skills:
A master chef, Ishta is skilled in most areas of the culinary field. She specializes in spicy curries and creamy soups, including a few sweet enough to be more dessert than meal. She is also highly trained in the Gerudo scimitar, which she’ll sometimes use when making a show of her cooking, but she can use it in earnest when the situation calls. Spending so much time servicing travelers has given her a talent for knowing where a person is from and does for a living, although this isn’t infallible by any stretch.
Backstory:
Ishta grew up in Gerudo Town, playing and training with other Gerudo children. Her mother instilled in her a healthy wariness of all voe, but this wariness is perhaps not as extreme as some of her sisters, due to frequent exposure in Kara Kara Bazaar. These trips to Kara Kara were to help her mother purchase ingredients for cooking, and to sell some of their culinary wares. Ishta, however, decided that she preferred to make soups and curries, meals not easily transported to sell. In her late teen years, she was hired to help the Kara Kara Inn feed the various travellers who came through. It was during this time she realized how much the isolation had restricted the Gerudos’ understanding of the other races, and fueled their wariness of them.
While knowing she herself was not immune to this viewpoint, she was determined to learn beyond it. Consequently, she moved her practice to the Gerudo Outpost in her mid-twenties, offering her culinary talents to the wider variety of merchants travelling to and from the desert as well as to the courier service stationed there. She enjoyed her work there and interacting with the different races who come through the outpost, but she learned from those same visitors about the Temple of Time, a temple devoted to the goddess Hylia, and the construction of another temple near it for the Heroines, under the supervision of Shula, the Gerudo Chieftain's daughter. Curious about the differences between the two religions, Ishta questions a few, and finds the distinctions fascinating. She has recently been considering taking a religious retreat to visit these two temples in Clock Town.
