  • Mezon

    Name: Mezon
    Gender: Male
    Age: 23
    Race: Rito
    Occupation/Class: Warrior

Appearance: Like all Rito he has primarily avian features that have become anthropomorphized through the ages. He is about average height for a Rito, standing at roughly 6’3’’. His plumage is mostly dark purple, with the tips of his wings and the feathers on his head approaching black. Along his wings he also has a simple dark pink strip all the way down to his torso which he personally considers his most attractive feature. Overall his feathers are dark enough that he can be really hard to see at night, something he uses to his advantage. His beak is mostly dark yellow and quite wide, covering most of his face. His eyes can look almost black, but depending on the light you can notice a soft violet hue to them. On his neck he has a thin long scar, remnants of the attack he suffered when young. Feathers no longer grow along this scar, allowing his soft pink skin to be visible along that line on his neck.

Mezon’s outfit is traditional of most Rito warriors. Aside from a steel and bronze alloy plate that covers his breast, most of the outfit is a combination of light cloth, leather, and feathers to ensure maintaining a light weight and easy maneuverability when flying. Stretchy beige leggings cover most of his legs and simple leather wrappings around his feet protect them during take-offs and landings. He also wears the tip of the talon that was used to slice his neck when he was young as a necklace (the leather band is tight enough so that it doesn’t fling around as he flies).

    Starter Equipment:
    • A multi-shot bow specifically designed for him by his parents to perfectly fit, allowing him to shoot up to three arrows at once
    • A large quantity of arrows, varied in their types but prioritizing shock and ice arrows as stunning enemies is his favorite tactique
    • A long red scarf he dons whenever he is trying to appear more “formal”
    • A small harp that he doesn’t always have on him but keeps with his things as he travels around
    • A simple bedroll, but no tent as he doesn’t mind sleeping out in the open
    • A necklace made from the talon of the creature that attacked him and cost him his voice
    • Always has about 100 rupees on hand in case he needs to restock on supplies

Personality: Before losing his voice, Mezon always had a very fatalistic sense of humor. He loved making light of difficult or sad situations as a coping mechanism, and found chaotic comedy to be his favorite. After the attack, he found it much harder to express his sentiments about such things but could still enjoy a hearty joke (despite not really being able to laugh). Most people assume he is a very stoic person when they meet him, mainly due to his silence, yet unbeknownst to most his thoughts are always racing and he has a hard time coming to grips with his own feelings, though he rarely lets them affect others and keeps them to himself. He is incredibly laser-focused when on a mission, having a hard time thinking of anything else, yet greatly enjoys relaxing and being laid-back when he’s not. He has often gotten into trouble for smiling at inappropriate times, such as when his friends get into trouble, if only because he is unable to explain what he finds funny about the situation. He is often hesitant to meet new people unless he absolutely has to, but not due to being shy or introverted. Rather, it is because he always has a hard time explaining his condition preventing him from speaking.

Skills: Being formally trained as a Rito Warrior, he is adept at archery whilst flying around at high speeds. He also takes advantage of the dark colors of his plumage (and his complete silence as he is unable to speak) to be a silent and deadly fighter during the night. After he lost his voice his father also recommended that he learn how to play an instrument to help him communicate his emotions, and thus he tried to learn how to play the harp which he found to be the easiest instrument to carry around. He isn’t the best at it, especially when constrained by having wings rather than hands, but he is good enough that someone would enjoy listening to him casually mess around with it. It also does, in fact, help him express his feelings after particularly emotionally exhausting days. Having listened in to conversations that the chieftain’s family was involved in for most of his life, he has also developed a certain degree of knowledge and understanding of political matters which comes in handy, particularly when attempting to negotiate with groups he is in conflict with. Also, he can cook a delicious hearty bass with stir-fried vegetables.

Backstory: Mezon was born to Makozo and Paisley, two simple Rito merchants living in the lowest levels of Rito City. They were trying to make a living by selling bows of the “finest Rito quality” to travelers passing through the area, but in a crowded market they struggled to make much more money than was necessary for them to barely scrape by. Mez was born in 67 ATR, right before the tensions between King Kadir and the other factions were beginning to reach their boiling point. Mez barely remembers seeing Hylians around the shop growing up as the interfactional tensions began to discourage travelers from venturing too far away from the Hylian territories.

When he turned five, the age when his parents would’ve usually begun teaching the family craft, Makozo decided to encourage him to join the training school to become a Rito Warrior. Though a very young Mez was confused by this, his father argued that with how poorly the business was doing the life of a warrior would probably provide for him far better than joining the family business ever would. In the end, Mez decided to follow his father’s advice and began training to become a warrior. It was there that he met Tebin, the son of Talia and grandson to the great Rito Chieftain. With a similar chaotic and fatalistic humor, as well as both of them being the youngest ones in the group, the two quickly bonded and became friends despite their very different backgrounds.

When Mez was nine, he and Tebin snuck out into the forest near The Nest one night and ran into a monstrous owl-like creature which ended up attacking Mez and slicing his throat. Tebin was able to drag Mez back and get him help, essentially saving his life. However, this permanently cost him his ability to speak or in any way make sound, dramatically changing his life. This solidified their friendship, however, making the two feel united more as siblings than as simply friends.

Despite them growing up training together, Tebin was never adept at fighting whereas Mez took a liking for archery and became quite good at it. This is why, when the boys were 13 and the chieftain’s family began worrying about secret attacks from the Hylians after Kadir found out about the meeting that the leaders of the Rito, Gerudo, and Gorons had held in secret, Tebin asked Mez to move into Dragon Roost with him. He argued that Mez could act as his bodyguard, and eventually Mez caved and agreed with the arrangement, always happy to spend more time with his best friend. It was this position among the chieftain’s family that allowed him to meet the new king, Roark, when he came to visit a year and a half later as part of the King’s Tour. Due to his close relationship with Tebin, as well as his absolute silence, he was allowed to sit in on several of the meetings that Roark carried out and grew very fond of the new King, whose entire mission seemed to be to restore the factions to a unity Mez had only heard about in stories.

This appreciation of Roark only grew as the improved relationships with the Rito led to a slow but steady increase in business for his parents. Finally, Roark dropping taxes against the Rito’s products in 84 ATR at last allowed his family to move to a more prosperous region of the City, solidifying Mez’s loyalty to this Hylian king. This is why, when Roark asked for the Rito’s help soon after in helping deal with the bandit groups and warlords plaguing Hyrule, Mez was one of the first to sign up. Normally he would’ve been a lot more hesitant to leave his post as Tebin’s bodyguard after so many years together, but by this point Tebin’s mother and aunt had become the de facto leaders of the Rito and as such his time was much more occupied dealing with the politics of the city rather than being allowed to spend it with his friend. After an emotional farewell, Mez travelled to the Hylian territories for the first time in his life.

He was there, heavily involved in the fight against the outlaws, when news broke of King Roark’s tragic death. Motivated by a strong sense of loyalty towards the late King he began to seriously consider if he should instead try to make himself available to little Talisha, the new Queen-to-be, in order to honor her father’s memory.
