“Your Majesty, they’re expecting you soon. Please come out whenever you’re ready to go.”

“Thank you, Richard. I’ll be out in just a moment.”

Talisha sighed, hunching over and holding her head in her hands with her fingers slipping into her hair. Her upcoming speech wasn’t all that concerning, as she’d been trained on how to give them in her royal education. The young Queen was more preoccupied with how the rest of the fair was going to go. She’d spent the past month and a half overseeing the completion of her father’s plans, and while there wasn’t any particular reason she could think of, Talisha still feared the possibility of some incident occurring that would ruin everything. Much of the former king’s hard-fought progress to ease international tensions had been essentially erased by his death, and Talisha was already struggling with getting a handle on the current state of affairs. If something tragic were to transpire at the fair, animosity would certainly rise and potentially put the throne’s authority at serious risk. Even worse, perhaps it was already at serious risk, and the hypothetical incident at the Fair would be the breaking point in which Hyrule would fall into the chaos of all-out war.

Talisha caught onto her pessimistic thinking and snapped out of it, quickly sitting up straight and putting her hands on her lap.

“The q-queen should not waver, for if she does, her kingdom wavers with her.”

She took a slow inhale, then released a soft, controlled exhale. She could almost hear his voice speaking the words along with her.

“The queen must not waver, for if she does, her kingdom wavers with her.”

Talisha stood up, and grabbed the small mirror on the desk she’d been sitting next to. She held it up to her face, and studied her own countenance silently. She could still hear the doubt in her head: she wasn’t supposed to be here. It was supposed to be him here, worrying about the fair, readying himself to speak to the people, looking at his face in the mirror. He would’ve given her a big hug that morning, said those three words she missed hearing him say every day, then come down to the field to prepare. She should’ve still been a princess, and he should’ve still been the king. He should’ve still been alive.
But there was no point in running from the truth. The fact of the matter was that he wasn’t the one here. She was.
“The queen cannot waver, for if she does, her kingdom wavers with her.”

Talisha put the mirror back on the desk without even looking at it. She then grabbed the door knob, and with another deep breath, opened it. In the next moment, she could see the castle in the distance, along with the clear blue sky behind it. The sun shone down on her from above, making her feel a little warm in the heavy, blue, royal dress she was wearing. Stepping out and closing the door behind her, Talisha looked to her left to see Richard silently waiting for her. After acknowledging her presence, the knight turned and gave a signal with his right hand to someone Talisha couldn’t see. A grand orchestral piece began to play, led by eager trumpets. Richard and Talisha waited in silence together as a crowd gathered on the other side of the platform. The young queen wondered what the crowd would look like, and how big it would be. She’d seen her fair number of crowds as a member of the royal family, but this was possibly going to be contending with the biggest of them.

A spark of excitement lit in Talisha, and instantly she became lost in thought. Would this be bigger than her father’s coronation? The idea thrilled and terrified her at the same time. Talisha then considered the fact of this speech’s location: just outside of the Sacred Grounds, in the middle of Hyrule Field. The other audiences she’d seen had been confined inside buildings, or within the walls of the town. The one she was about to meet was in an expansive open, flat area, which would allow a higher volume of people. The queen’s heartbeat quickened as she realized just how large the waiting crowd might be.

Richard turned around once again to see something, then looked back to Talisha and nodded. Together they walked to the end of the platform, and turned the corner to ascend some steps which took them to the platform’s surface. Richard remained at their entry point as Talisha walked to the pedestal in the center of the stage, her gaze forward so as to avoid seeing the crowd.

Once she reached the center, Talisha finally turned to see the onlookers. She let out a small gasp as her eyes attempted to take in the thousands of faces in front of them. Indeed, this crowd dwarfed the others she’d seen, not only in size but also diversity. The amount of non-Hylians was a pleasant shock, quickly returning the queen’s composure and confidence. She’d had a small fear that she would be addressing a crowd of mostly Hylians, which would’ve proved troubling for an event meant to be about the appreciation of all cultures in Hyrule.

Quieting her remaining extraneous thoughts, Talisha stepped up to the pedestal and gave a big smile. A few cheers erupted from the spectators, but were all quickly silenced by those anxious to hear the queen’s words.

“Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to the first ever Hyrulean World’s Fair! I am eternally grateful to the Goddess Hylia both for the life she has given us and for allowing us to gather here today. In particular, I would like to extend a special welcome to our honored guests who found the time in their busy lives leading the other factions of Hyrule to travel great distances and join us for this special occasion: Prince Sidon of the Zora, Big Boss Yunobo and Boss Gorko of the Gorons, Chieftain Avani of the Gerudo, Chieftain Tulin and his honorable daughter Talia of the Rito, and Representative Raya of the Sheikah. Sincerely, thank you all for coming today as your presence here today symbolizes the importance of this monumental gathering. In fact, this is the first time in 80 years that representatives of the leadership of all the Hyrulean factions have gathered in one place since the Second Gathering of the Collective. I pray that the weight and meaning behind this occasion is not lost on any of us.

“This was something my father, the late King Roark, was in the midst of planning at the time of his passing. Though my eyes cannot pierce the heavens, I do believe he is smiling down on all of us on this blessed day. The World’s Fair was always meant to be a testament to the ideals his reign was meant to uphold, which mine shall now carry on in his memory: peace, equity, justice, diversity, freedom. Indeed, when it came down to it, all my father ever wanted was for Hyruleans from all walks of life to be able to come together and break bread, being judged not by their physical appearance but by the content of their character.

“So today, let us simply exist alongside each other as neighbors and friends. May we open our eyes to the world around us, admire each other’s contributions, and share both food and laughter. More than anything, may we use this time to learn from each other, to learn about each other, and to learn about what we can do when we all work together. Do all of this not for me, nor for the throne which I sit upon, but for yourselves, and those around you.”

Talisha took a small bow, prompting the massive crowd to erupt into a cacophony of cheering and applause. She swiftly made her way off stage as she tried not to visibly wince at how overwhelmingly loud the sound was. As the people were quieted down, the royal herald made his way onto the platform to make an announcement.

“And now, for the opening act, the Tsunami 6!”

At their cue, the various backing members of Tsunami 6 took their respective spots on stage. Makon sat in the back at his drumset, while his brother Beto slinked to stage left with his fishbone bass guitar. Dr. Japi stepped onto the platform behind his keyboard on the opposite side and Vata was near him. The audience cheered in good spirits as the band got themselves settled. The fanfare boosted when Kiko and Mikela finally joined at the front of the stage, adorned in jewels and skimpy clothes worthy of Zora royalty.

“Hellooooo Hyrule! How’re you feeling today?” Mikela greeted in a shout, to more cheering in response. “Feeling alright?” More applause.

With that, they burst into their short but lively introduction, their theme. They were immediately locked in with Mikela shaking and twirling across the stage, conducting musical electricity to the crowd with her erratic dancing. Their fans seemed to have found their way to the front of the audience, pleasantly returning the energy. For the uninitiated, it would be their first time enjoying a splash of sound that was fresh in Hyrule from one of the greatest troupes of entertainers the land had seen in ages. Their surf rock crashed down on the fair like a tsunami of good vibes.

Their introductory song concluded in under a minute to a healthy rumble of applause.

“We are so honored to come together with you for this historic event. It’s gonna be a good one!” Mikela announced to the fairgoers. “We wrote a little something for the World’s Fair, and we hope you enjoy it!”

Makon played a tom fill, and the band jumped into the perky World’s Fair Theme, their bodies grooving with their various Zora instruments and Mikela dancing once more.

A few measures in, she joined in on the flute with a melody somewhat reminiscent of an ancient royal Hylian song. She swayed gracefully as her sweet flute notes rang out over the fair.

After that bit, the song went into a section with a bit more tension as Vata’s lead guitar lines ripped through the atmosphere. This resolved back into their original groove and they repeated the song form once more, only gaining energy until the final beat splashed out to an eruption of clapping, hollering and whistling from the crowd.

“Thank you!” Mikela shouted gratefully, blowing a grand kiss with both arms. The 6 bowed simultaneously. “We’ll see you later tonight. Enjoy yourselves!” She gave a wave goodbye and the band made their way offstage, pleased with their performance.

Alouette cooed happily as she and Julianna approached the fair, a crowd forming around the main stage. She started rushing ahead, but slowed down so Juli could catch up with her, and reached down to hold her hand so they wouldn't be separated. "Look! It's the new Hylian queen!" she squeed, pointing and bouncing a little. She was shushed by another spectator and quickly settled back down, but her grin never left her face. "There she is!" she whispered loudly to Julianna.

Weaving his way through crowds of people, Tassus struggled to find the tailor shop he came all this way for. Not being all that great at navigating castle town at the best of times, the shifting crowds had him hopelessly wandering in circles. After a good while of searching he found the shop he was looking for. Unfortunately, the door was locked with a sign posted out front. "Closed due to festivities, come back tomorrow." Tassus sighed "looks like we've got some time to kill huh Ikuh?" Looking over his shoulder he noticed Ikuh wasn't there. "oh great, he chooses a crowded festival to wander off in." He began searching all over town, just as lost as before. "IKUH!.......IKUUUUHHH!" He continued to call out but it seemed his owl had all but disappeared.

Juliana chuckled at her friend's excitement, then looked forward as the queen began talking. She found the speech quite moving, and cheered loudly as Talisha bowed and left the platform. The following Tsunami 6 performance completely amazed her, and she was happy to hear that they would apparently be performing again later. When the opening ceremony ended, Juli was ready to start exploring the fair.

Taking Alouette's hand, Juli followed the rest of the crowd into the fairgrounds. By the time everyone had effectively dispersed, the two found themselves in between rows of exhibits and shops, manned by various citizens of Hyrule of all shapes, sizes, and colors.

"So, wanna pick the first stop?" Juli asked, looking to Allie.

Gorbi settled himself down at the small space he had rented out for this event. The stall that had been offered for his use was just the wrong size for him to be comfortable using to display his items. So instead he pushed it to the back of the space and placed most of the wares he was keeping separate inside it. The delicate pieces he was displaying were instead laid out on a blanket in front of him, a few of the larger, more decorative pieces on top of cushions. While most of his display consisted of the jewelry he was best at, there were a few pieces he had made that were just simple sculptures. He only had a couple of these, but he'd brought a few ingots to carve while waiting for any customers, and he'd set up a small foundry in case anyone wanted to commission him for pieces during the fair.

Mezon looked around in a mild panic, mentally chastising himself. Listening to the young queen speak had filled him with such hope, a feeling he had only felt once before when her father and her had come to the City. Then, however, Tsunami 6's performance had been so captivating that he'd completely lost track of where the queen had gone after. He strained his neck to try to see over the heads as the crowd dispersed into the many rows of shops and exhibitions, but the royal was nowhere to be found. Sighing, he changed his focus. Queen Talisha had mentioned that among the many faction leaders attending the event, Tulin and Talia were both here. He had also not seen where they had been seating, but Tulin in his old age had grown large enough that he felt more confident in being able to find him than he did the small queen. Partially he did this thinking that the faction leaders might all be moving through the fair together, but more than that if Talia was here he knew there was a chance that Tebin might be too. Not having seen his best friend in months, Mez filled with excitement and began wandering around the booths absentmindedly, his head extended and his eye darting back and forth among the many people crowding around.

"Be back in thirty, tops," Moto advised as Mikela walked out of their rehearsal room for lunch.

"Alright, alright, we'll be right back!" Mikela said in phony assurance. She didn't see why they needed to stay in their makeshift box and rehearse all day. They already had the setlist down pat. Only the big Zora dummer Makon was with her, always her unofficial bodyguard. The others seemed content hanging around and playing their fingertips raw, but she needed a moment out in the thick of the Fair's first day. It was so exciting.

It didn't take long for someone to notice her and run over asking for an autograph, followed by more eager fans. She played it bashfully, but really loved all the attention she was receiving.

"Oh, they just adore us!" she beamed, looking back at Makon when she got a chance to breathe.

"Come on, at this rate we'll be walking all day," Makon prodded. "I'm hungry."

"I know you are, big guy."

Eventually they made their way over to the rows of food stands. Out of all the various options of cultural cuisine, they of course gravitated to the first one they saw with a Zora vendor. He was a spindly old fellow, hunched over his counter with his papery hat and fish whiskers, rapidly rolling up sushi while serving customers. Mikela thought the guy looked like he was gonna keel over from exhaustion or old age, though he impressively never seemed to slow down. Not until Mikela arrived, that is. He looked starstruck.

"Miss Mikela! How lovely you were on the stage, I could hear you from here," he praised, barely glancing at Makon. Mikela barely managed a "thank you" before he began to load sushi into a box for them to take. "Your band must be hungry. Here, it's on me!"

"Oh, thank you, but I insist," Mikela slid the old Zora a hefty sum of rupees for his service. "You be well." He bowed and thanked her profusely.

Mikela handed the food to Makon to carry, while she continued on into the fair.

"Where are you going?" Makon asked. "We need to get back."

"No we don't, he said thirty minutes."

Makon sighed as Mikela pressed on, still moving slowly since the fans never stopped coming and she never shut them down. Soon they had their own little swarm. As they entered into areas of other trades, she was dazzled with the endless possibilities of stuff to buy and finally broke her attention from her fans. She stopped at a Gerudo's jewel stall, utterly awed by the gleaming gems.

"Oh, how good these would look in my headdress!" she said in amazement.

"Don't spend your whole per diem..."

"Yeah, absolutely!" Alouette began wandering about, trying to pick the most interesting booth when she caught sight of Mezon, a Rito she'd known back in Rito City. Well, perhaps she didn't know him, but she definitely recognized him from the events her parents forced her into. She froze, and stared at him for a moment, trying to decide if it would be a good idea to interact with somebody who might get word back to her parents that she was still frolicking around like a child. Finally, she swallowed her fear and approached a booth Mezon stood near, a dye shop advertising every colour of the rainbow. If he saw her, then fine, but she wasn't going to make the first move.

Soon Makon was drawn in by the Gerudo gems as well, and picked one up to study it.

"Hands off, voe!" the Gerudo vendor growled at an unnecessary volume. The Zoras recoiled and were quick to move on to look at other stalls.

"Bitch," Mikela said under her breath, grimacing. Makon agreed. Next they reached a Goron's stall, who had some sleek looking gold and silver wares. "Ooh, Makon. Look at these." She was absorbed by a particular silver band, thinking it would compliment her armband tattoo. She was too scared now to touch anything, though.

Juli took a look at the stall Allie had chosen. She panicked for a moment seeing that it was a dye shop, thinking the owner might be someone who did business with her family, but was relieved when she didn't recognize the Hylian shopkeeper. Quickly she took her place beside her friend and began to admire the range of colors on display.

"This fair is totally going to kill my wallet, isn't it?" Juli asked as she eyed the prices.

"Who knows? Maybe my stall will do it all by itself," the shopkeeper replied with a grin. Juli physically cringed, realizing she had said her previous thought aloud.

Gorbi's spreading his wares across the ground like a travelling merchant had made a few leery of checking out his selection, while others had been intrigued by it instead. He'd already made a couple sales, although at least one protentional sale had been lost when he'd been asked to adjust a piece to include a ruby purchased at another stall and he'd responded with the appropriate disdain. The couple had left in a huff and were replaced by a pair of Zoras. Gorbi smiled at them, although he tried to remember not to use the huge grin typical of Gorons, having learned many non-Gorons found it disconcerting. "Good afternoon, fine friends! Anything strike your fancy? Each of these were made by me with the care and devotion a cucoo would devote to her eggs. Or perhaps you'd rather a personal piece, made to compliment those intricate tattoos?" While he wouldn't object if either Zora wished to try on the various pieces (he had a polished mirror on hand for just such a reason), he kept a careful eye for any thieving hands that might pocket his pieces. Few dared steal from a Goron, but he'd no issue proving why that was the case.

Mezon kept looking around, weaving through the booths. His vision was focused far away from where he actually was as he tried to find people he recognized, so much so that he almost ran beak first into someone who had just moved to stand in front of him. He almost tripped as he skidded to a stop, raising up his wings to both steady himself and apologize to whoever it had been. I could've sworn they weren't there a minute ago, he thought to himself, though he knew he had not been paying close attention at all so it must have been his fault. Finally taking a closer look at who he had almost run into, his eyes widened in shock. Not only was it a Rito, it was someone he knew! Well, knew might have been a strong word. He actually wasn't sure he remembered what the girl's name was, but he knew she was related to Tebin. A cousin maybe? She had been around sometimes when the Chieftain's family had been together, though he'd never actually interacted much with her. He felt like it must've been at least two years since the last time he'd seen her though. Still, she was related to Talia and Tulin which meant she might know where to find them, and thus where to find the princess.

Unsure of whether she would even recognize him, Mez tried to get her attention by waving his left wing hello and smiling at her.

Makon was also busy taking in all the various accessories and trinkets the Goron had set out. The craftsgoron's style was right up his alley.

Allie looked up when she saw Mez wave his wing and forced a smile. "Heey," she said awkwardly, rubbing the back of her head with a free wing. "You're from Rito City too, right? Well, of course you're from Rito City, that's where most of us are from! Uh," she swallowed hard. "I'm rambling, sorry. This is my friend Julianna! She's from Tarrey Town, but we live in Clock Town now! And, sorry, that's enough about us. How are you!" she didn't remember that he was mute, only that he was usually around the royal family when they were younger.
