(Hello! This post contains Part 1 of The End. I've split it into parts because if I posted all of it in one post, it might be a bit overwhelming unless you're used to chapters being longer than what seems to be the standard here. Not to mention it's easier for me to break it up and post parts of it instead of giving it to you whole. Well, enough of this introductory nonsense, onto the story!)

The End, Part 1: Splitting the Cracked Egg

When Tails opened his eyes, he was buried under debris. Using what was left of the power that had protected him, he pushed the debris off of him. Then, after standing up, he brushed the dust off of his tails.

The base looked nothing like it had before. Everything had fallen, and there was a weird fog in the air. The fog made it really hard to see, but Tails knew exactly where Eggman was.

Tails looked to his right. He had been correct. There was the Eggman, all of his limbs restricted by debris. Even with his fat stomach, it was a miracle he survived. He should have been crushed to death. But fate had not smiled upon him because of his crimes against Mobius (which if you don't remember from the previous post, is Earth), so he was left to Sonic's friends, whose hearts were filled with hate and sadness.

"Tails, please! Don't kill me!" Eggman pleaded, knowing that he had a very low chance of living to see tommorow.

Tails glared at Eggman and spit on him. "You really think someone my age should kill someone? Oh wait, you probably do, because you're evil and you killed my best friend!" Tails yelled at Eggman, which did a very good job of crushing Eggman's hopes. "I'm leaving you to Shadow."

As Eggman started to freak out at the thought of Shadow killing him, Shadow came through the fog with Knuckles, wielding the Chaos Scythe.

"You're lucky you used it for a just purpose, Knuckles." Shadow told him. "You might've had to do ten years of service under Death himself."

"You forget I'm the Guardian of the Master Emerald." Knuckles said, not appreciating what seemed like a lack of respect from Shadow at a time like this.

When Shadow saw Eggman, he made sure to stand over him in a menacing way.

"P-p-please Shadow, don't! I'll-!" Eggman was cut off by Shadow, who had stomped Eggman's face.

"How many times have you said that to Sonic? How many times have you said that and not gone through with it? We are tired of your schemes, Eggman. I don't care if the others disagree with me or not, but I believe you must die. Goodbye, Eggman. I hope Death is fair when you go to court and sends you straight to hell."

Shadow pointed the blade part of the Chaos Scythe at Eggman, which glowed for about ten seconds before a beam of red light came and whisked Eggman's body away.

Knuckles promptly cursed Eggman for about five minutes after Shadow picked up Sonic's body, then the group started going back home.

When their home was in sight, Tails decided to break the silence by answering a question they all had in their minds.

"I'll tell Amy. She'll probably react less...violently if she hears it from me."

Shadow and Knuckles nodded in agreement as they walked into Knothole, the small village that housed the survivors of the siege of Mobotroplis, the battle that had started it all.

The End, Part 2: Funeral

(Here's some music I thought fit the theme of this whole story. Yes, I know it's from a Call of Duty game, but give it a listen. I think it gets you in the mood, but that's just me.)

As they entered Knothole, Shadow headed to the graveyard with Sonic's body to begin digging and Knuckles went to get a coffin. Tails had to tell everyone else. Which meant telling Amy.

As Tails walked towards his destination, he realized how selfless the villagers who lived in Knothole been when the survivors of the siege of Mobotropolis had come. The villagers who had lived in the houses moved to the huts when the refugees came. And then we repaid them by saving them from Eggman, I guess.

When Tails reached Amy's door, he sighed. This wasn't going to be easy. Well, easier than it would've been for Knuckles or Shadow, but still hard nonetheless. After taking a second to compose himself, he knocked on the door.

"I'll be right there!" Tails heard Amy say from her room, which was in the back of her house.

A few seconds later, she opened the door. "Oh, hi Tails! I guess you took down Eggman if you've made it back here alive. But...."

Darn it. Tails thought as he began to lose his composure. He tried to make it not too obvious something was wrong, but he failed. He could feel the tears coming as he tried to regain his composure.

"Amy...S-S-Sonic....he...."

Amy's eyes widened. "No...no....no...he...he died?"

Tails nodded and wiped the tears that had come out away, even though there was more to come.

Amy screamed, fell to her knees, and covered her face with her hands. They both stood there, Tails with his head hung low and Amy covering her face, both crying.

All of the sudden, Amy got up and grabbed Tails' shoulders. "How did he...?" Amy asked, unable to speak the word she hoped she would have never had to associate with Sonic.

"Metal Sonic...." Tails barely managed to replied, his tears almost flowing like a river.

"You..you and Knuckles...destroyed Metal Sonic afterwards....right?"

"Yes."

The two stood there crying for what seemed to be an eternity until a villager approached them.

"Amy? Tails? What's wrong?"

When Tails told him, he began crying as well.

(Later, at the funeral....)

Everyone in Knothole Village told around Sonic's grave, with the people who knew him the best being the closest to his grave. Everyone was crying except Shadow, who fought the tears. He couldn't cry. If he did, people would think the Ultimate Life Form was vulnerable, and that wouldn't be a huge morale booster.

"I have something to say."

It seemed like the whole world focused on Shadow when he said that. Nobody expected him to say anything. Some villagers who didn't know Sonic and his friends very well thought that Shadow completely disliked Sonic and was only here to disgrace his memory. But this was not the case.

"I know I denied this when Sonic was still around, but he was my friend. The closest I had to a friend out of our whole team. And because of my pride, I treated everyone horribly. With Sonic's death, I realized what I've done, and to honor Sonic's death, I plan to amend how I act. Sonic, if you're listening, I'm sorry you had to die for me to realize this."

When Shadow finished talking, everyone began crying again. This gave Shadow a perfect opportunity to do what he wanted to do at this funeral.

Almost effortlessly, Shadow tapped into the Chaos Force and enhanced his vision and looked towards the sky. Nobody could tell his eyes were glowing because they were too busy crying.

Shadow scanned the sky, but did not find who he was looking for. He was surprised. He thought he would've been here.

Someone tapped Shadow's shoulder, and he turned around. The person Shadow was looking for wasn't in the sky as he thought, but right behind him.

If anyone else had looked behind Shadow, they would've seen nothing. But Shadow saw the ghost of Sonic.

It was a bit hard to tell it was Sonic because Shadow was used to Sonic's physical form, but Shadow could see that it was Sonic, just less solid and with a slight color change (if you're wondering about his appearance, imagine a life size glass model of Sonic with a light blue outline and two blue circles where his eyes would be) .

I was wondering where you'd be. Shadow said telepathically to Sonic.

You really think I'd miss my own funeral when I have the option to go? I'm not the guy you pretended to be when I was alive, Shadow. Sonic said, more or less teasing Shadow's recent speech.

Oh, shut up. The Ultimate Life Form needs to show he isn't a robot sometimes. Shadow said, a small smile briefly flashing on his face.

Sonic did something that seemed like chuckling, then became serious. Look, Shadow, you need to give them sometime, but I'm counting on you to help Tails, Knuckles, and Amy move on.

You realize this means you owe me twice, right?

I can repay both of my debts if you can beat the hounds guarding the gate to Other World.

Don't even start. I could take you and the hounds.

Sonic smiled. Well, Aurora is calling me back to Other World. I have to go now. I'll visit you if you don't come see me in the next more.

Shadow let out a quiet chuckle. Challenge accepted.

Shadow watched Sonic leave, then stopped using his Chaos powers. People began to leave the funeral. Eventually, it was just Shadow, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy.

Knuckles promptly stopped crying and composed himself.

"Come on guys, let's go home and rest. Today's been a long day."

(You think it's gonna end here? Incorrect! I still have Part 3 to post! Expect it sometime this weekend [possibly tommorow]!)

The End, Part 3

Knuckles and Tails sat on the roof of Knuckles' newly built house and looked over the ocean that Angel Island was currently floating over. It was very beautiful, so none of them spoke. But Knuckles knew he had to. He had to be sure that Tails had moved on.

"Tails...have you gotten over Sonic yet?"

Tails looked at Knuckles and nodded. "It's taken me a while, but I've...let go."

Knuckles sighed. "We've both lost our parents and our best friend. Could it get any worse?"

Tails slowly nodded. "Yes, but let's not get into that. I realized while getting over Sonic, I completely shut out my other friends. When we lose someone, we just keep mourning, even though we know the person we're mourning would just want us to....move on."

Knuckles laughed. "Yeah, especially Sonic. If he was still alive, I bet he'd be saying 'You're too slow!' "

Both of them laughed for three seconds before calming down.

"Yeah, you're right." Tails said, smiling as he saw a bunch of dolphins jump above the surface of the water and dive back in. "Do you think that we'll have to fight some other evil dude?"

Knuckles shook his head. "I hope not. The death of Eggman should be enough to keep evil off of our minds for as long as we live. Actually, make that as long as YOU live, because who knows how long I'll live thanks to my dad experimenting on me when I was a baby."

"At least you didn't grow up as the Chosen One. You know how many years in advance the Ancient Walkers told me about a prophecy that didn't come true until recently?"

Again, they laughed.

Knuckles then realized something. "You know, Sonic wouldn't want for us to mourn him at all. He'd want us to remember all the good times we had."

When Knuckles said that, Tails felt like he was taken back in time. He saw himself flying Sonic's biplane, the Tornado 1, with Sonic on the wing. Sonic appeared to be telling some kind of joke, and when he finished, they both laughed hysterically.

Tails snapped back to the present. He could tell that Knuckles knew what just happened.

"See what I mean?" Knuckles said, smirking.

"Oh, shut up." Tails said, punching Knuckles' arm.

There was a silence before they spoke again.

"Knuckles?" Tails asked, gaining Knuckles' attention almost immediately. "Can we still hangout when we have families and all? I feel like if we don't make this promise now, we'll never keep it."

Knuckles laughed. "I can't imagine why we wouldn't, but if you need my word, you have it."

"Best buds until my tails stop spinning?"

"More like best buds until Death decides we're 'too slow'."

And throughout the years, they extended their promise to Amy, Shadow, and everyone who had helped them throughout all the adventures they had.

But best of all, they managed to get everyone to keep it.
