    Prologue
Four men sat around a table, talking in low voices. One suddenly spoke louder, his face contorted in rage. “No! We will not kill the poor kids, they are as innocent as can be!” He stood up to make his point seem stronger, bulging his muscles as he did so. He had dark hair tainted with grey here and there. His eyes glowed brown in the candlelight. Suddenly another man also stood up, this one’s hair was red, and it was cut short. He looked younger than the others, yet he seemed to be the one in charge,
“How many times will we go over this Marion? There is no other way! Those kids must die!” This started yet another argument, and there had already been many that same night. Only one person remained in his seat, his eyes were closed and a hood covered his aged face, casting a shadow over it. He seemed to be asleep, but he was really just in deep thought, for he wasn’t in that room for the same reasons the others were.
“That is enough! I’ve had enough of your little fits, and I will tolerate no more of them under my roof!” exclaimed the second man, whose name was Frederic. Without second thought Marion drew his sword, but Frederic was faster than him. In the wink of an eye he had drawn his own sword and stabbed Marion across the heart with it. Marion gave a little gasp, then stumbled back onto his chair as his eyes rolled into his head, and he was gone. His sword slipped from his hand and hit the floor, making a loud clang as it made contact. Immediately the rest of the men went silent and sat back down, while the cloaked man hadn’t even twitched. Frederic turned back to the others, “OK, now that that is taken care of, shall we execute the plan?”
“The only thing that will be executed tonight, will be you, Frederic.”
Everyone’s eyes flashed to the sound of the new voice, even the cloaked man looked up. Frederic turned to have his eyes meet with those of the new man. His dirty-blonde hair fell in bangs on his forehead, and the crest of the Hylian Army shone on his shoulder. At this the rest of the men stood up and made for the door, but someone was blocking it already: the cloaked man.
“I’m sorry gentleman, but I’m afraid you won’t be getting away so easily,” he said as the men drew their swords. The man moved fast like a ninja, kicking and trashing. Soon all the swords lay on the ground, and the men stood there, frozen in place by fear.
“Thank you for your help, Jacques,” said the newcomer, his eyes still staring into Frederic’s.
“My pleasure Andrew,” responded the cloaked man.
“Ah, I finally get to meet the infamous Andrew, captain of the Hylian Army,” said Frederic, a smile creeping up on his face.
“Indeed,” answered the newcomer. Suddenly the sound of someone running into the room caught the attention of everyone.
“Papa, what’s going on?” said an utmost innocent voice. Its owner was a boy, roughly 10 years old. His young face pale white in the light of the candlelight. His blue eyes glittering in the shadows, his red hair cut short, just like his father’s.
“Chase! Go back to your room at once, I will be there in a minute,” said Frederic, but Chase didn’t have a chance to move, before Andrew talked again.
“I am afraid, Frederic, that you won’t, ever again. You have caused enough trouble in the past, and you will not be allowed to do so anymore.” Frederic’s eyes widened, showing the slightest hint of fear in them.
“What does he mean, papa?” asked Chase, but Frederic didn’t have a second to respond, for Andrew had already slashed at him with his sword, cutting him across the chest deeply, a deathly blow. The sound of Chase’s scream was drowned out by the sound of men entering the house and taking in custody the other men, while Jacques was nowhere to be seen. All this happened as Chase’s tears started running down his face, the body of his papa crumpling to the ground in front of him.

    Chapter One
“Ah! I hate this! I don’t understand why she won’t let me join!” James was saying to himself. He was just coming from the Castle, where he had again been denied signing up for the army. He just couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t let him join even if it was his lifelong dream. No, he did understand. He knew it was because of his mother. She had given the captain precise orders not to let him join. He didn’t know why though, so he was always angry at her. She always came up with the excuse that he was just ten, “Too young to join.” But that wasn’t true; his friend Fernando had enlisted a year earlier, when he was just nine.
“Why can’t you just let me do what I want!?” he was yelling to the skies while closing his eyes, just as a small rock caused him to lose his balance and fall flat on his face. When he stood up and opened his eyes, he found that he had actually walked into a cavern. Everything was dark and cold. The walls were rough, and filled with cracks. The ceiling wasn’t too high, but even if he stood as tall as he could and stretched as far as he would go, he still couldn’t touch it. The cave itself wasn’t very big either, but it wasn’t too small. An idea suddenly popped into his head. That was when he started feeling the Sun on his neck. He turned around to see the great Hyrule Field, completely tainted with orange by a magnificent sunset.
“Oh no,” James said to himself, “I need to hurry home.” He turned around towards the cavern and smiled at the big plans he had for it. Then he ran outside and turned around one last time to look at the cavern, only to find that he couldn’t see it. He walked back to where he had come and once again was inside it. “What the?” he thought. He walked back outside and realized that the walls of the cave camouflaged with the ones outside, hiding the cave from sight. He quickly grabbed the sharpest rock he could find and carved an “x” on the wall, so he could find the cave later. He then turned around and started running back to Kakariko Village, back to his home. “I’m definitely going back tomorrow,” he thought.

“James! Breakfast time!” a voice called, but James didn’t move. “Honey! Wake up!” the same voice called again, but once more, James didn’t move one bit. Suddenly the door was flung open, making James jump out of bed. “I said it’s breakfast time!” James’ mom said to him, “Now quickly get dressed and come to the table.” She then turned around and left, closing the door behind her. James sighed; she couldn’t wait five more minutes? He thought. He looked around his room and thought, I really need to clean my room, it is a total mess. The floor was full of dirty clothes, pieces of paper, and just any kinds of trash. He walked to his bathroom carefully, since he didn’t want to get anything stuck on his feet. Once he got there, he looked at himself in the mirror. His dirty-blonde hair covered his ears partially, and his grey eyes looked as though he hadn’t slept at all last night. He smiled, I didn’t sleep last night. He had actually stayed up thinking about his plans for the cave the entire night. He then proceeded to grab his usual gray shirt, his usual black pants, and his usual dirty-white shoes. After getting dressed he exited his room, locking the door behind him. As soon as he entered the dining room, the smell of eggs hit his nose. He sat down and began eating. Once he was finished he took his plates to the sink, and left them there. Then he grabbed his black jacket and went outside, yelling back, “I’ll be home later!”
James started walking through Kakariko, hearing many, “Hello James!” on the way. He waved back but didn’t stop to say hi. He didn’t have time, he was on a hurry. His first stop today, Hyrule Castle. Once he exited Kakariko, he started running. It would’ve taken him almost half a day to get there, if it hadn’t been for a friend of his mom, Mr. Blackcat. Mr. Blackcat had been taking some food to the Castle Town Market, so he offered James a ride in his wagon. James gladly took it, and about an hour later, they arrived at the Castle Town.
“Thanks Mr. Blackcat!” James called out as he got off at the entrance.
“No problem ma’ boy! Anytime!” Mr. Blackcat called back. James then proceeded to walk all the way to the Castle Gate. Once the guard saw him, he recognized James immediately.
“Jameson Borgon, not again!” the guard exclaimed.
“Hello, Geronimo, how have you been?” James asked the man, who looked like he was in his late 40’s.
“Well James, I have been fine. Of course, that was ‘till you showed up. Now I’m just wondering, what does he want now?” the man that went by the name of Geronimo answered. James smiled and walked forward to hug his old friend. For three years they’d known each other, and in all of those three years, James had always loved Geronimo like family.
“It’s good to see you too Geronimo,” James said. Geronimo smiled and hugged James back. Geronimo motioned James to a chair nearby so James sat down, then sat down himself.
“So tell me my boy, what brings you hear on such a wonderful day?” asked Geronimo.
“Well, I don’t know if you heard,” James began, “but I was denied entrance to the army…”
“Yes, I heard about that, I’m sorry.” answered Geronimo.
“Don’t mention it,” said James, “I don’t care, not anymore.” When he said that, Geronimo looked really surprised.
“Really? But I thought it was your lifelong dream to join the army!”
“It was, but after being rejected a hundred times, and knowing that it will never happen, it’s not anymore. You see, I finally realized that if I want to become a good fighter, the army isn’t the right way.” Now Geronimo was really intrigued, and he showed it by leaning forward.
“So, what do you have in mind?” Geronimo asked. James thought of all the plans he had, there was certainly a lot going through his mind.
“Well, where to start…” James answered, with a mischievous smile on his face.

    Chapter Two
“Thanks!” James yelled back at Geronimo. Geronimo waved back smiling. Under his arm James was now carrying two thick books, their labels clearly printed on the side: Mastering the Weapon and Fighting for Rookies. As he walked through the streets of Castle Town he recognized a face here and there, but he didn’t stop to say hi. Not today he thought, today I have a purpose. So he simply walked by until he got to the gates. The smell of freedom hit him, the smell he loved so much. He started into a light trot in the direction in which he recalled the cave was. After half an hour he came to a stop, panting. He must have traveled a good 5 miles already, he wasn’t used to running from the Castle to Kakariko, after all, he was never in a hurry. He looked around and spotted something on a wall about half a mile in front of him. Recognizing it as the ‘x’ he had carved the day before, he sighed in relief and decided to walk the rest of the way. While he walked his mind went over what had happened so far.
He had explained to Geronimo his plan; that had been the first step.
“Well you know how I am never going to get into the army?” he started, and Geronimo was going to protest, to say that there was still a chance, but James kept going. “So, I have finally decided another way, maybe even a better one, to become a fighter.” At this Geronimo raised his eyebrows, obviously curious as to what this new way was. “So, I have decided to train myself, you see, but I need erm, help.”
Geronimo smiled slightly, he could see where this was going, so he simply asked, “And where do I come in, in this plan of yours?” James smiled, happy to see his old friend hadn’t started calling him foolish for such a foolish idea.
“Well, the problem is I don’t really have a way to train myself…without a book on how to fight or something. And the only place where there are that kinds of books here is…”
“The Castle Training Grounds,” finished Geronimo. James nodded. Geronimo smiled, he didn’t know if James was serious or not, but he was always glad to help him, he loved the look of happiness on his face. “Let me see what I can do,” he added and walked into a door behind him.
James waited…and waited, and waited some more. Finally, after around 20 minutes, the door reopened and Geronimo came holding the two books.
He explained, “This one,” he showed the one labeled: ‘Mastering the Weapon,’ “It portrays every weapon you can possibly imagine. Any good fighter knows that he must master as many weapons as he possibly can, but every good fighter has ‘his’ weapon. The one weapon no one will be able to beat him at, the one weapon that he will know so well that it will be like an extension to his hand. This book, will help you find that weapon.” He handed it over, and as James took it he said a simple, “Thanks.”
“Now this one,” he showed the other one labeled ‘Fighting for Rookies,’ which was much thicker, “It teaches one everything you will need for fighting. Now, this is just the basics, but if you master every single thing in here, you will be one huge step closer in becoming a warrior.” James took it as well.
He looked at them both and then smiled widely at Geronimo, “You don’t know how much I appreciate it Geronimo.”
“Don’t mention it kid, now off you go.”

So now here he was, already reaching the cave. He walked in and felt he had entered another world. The cave was really cool, unlike the field outside. He liked the darkness it created, but he knew he wouldn’t be able to work in complete darkness. He hid the books behind some rocks and left running to Kakariko. 30 minutes later James was running back into the cave, a big heavy sack in his hands. He set it down at the foot of the cave and began taking the contents out. Torches. He had gone to a store in Kakariko and bought a few torches, 10 in total. They were enough to light up the cave. He began setting them around the walls, placing them in cracks to keep them in place. Once he was done he began lighting them. After he finished doing that, the cave looked much brighter than before, and cozier too. James smiled, happy with his work. He decided to sit down and rest for a minute. He took this chance to grab one of the books and open it; it was the Fighting for Rookies. He started reading out loud to himself.

Hello there, if you are reading this you are already one step closer into becoming a fighter! Isn’t that awesome? Still, there is a long way yet to go, but we will guide you in your first steps.
Now, you may be wondering, where to start? Well first of all, you have to make sure you have the proper equipment to train! Make sure you read the next chapter, labeled Equipment and Stuff, but for now keep reading this chapter! So, why do you want to become a fighter? It doesn’t matter, the only thing that matters is that you do! Being a fighter is really cool, because, you get to fight! And who doesn’t love fighting? I’ll tell you who, boring people. That’s right, if you become a fighter, you become one of the cool guys! So I am sure you will love everything about this book. It has everything, from equipment, to exercises, to techniques! Also be sure to check out our book about choosing a weapon, and read away!

That was the end of the prologue, and with just reading that James was already bouncing with excitement. There was one thing that bothered him though, the equipment. He didn’t have any, but he was sure as hell going to get it if that’s what it took to become a fighter. He turned a couple of pages to get to what he wanted.
    Equipment and Stuff
Before becoming a warrior, you have to train, and train, and train some more! And what do you need to train? Well equipment of course! He we are going to tell you a few things you need to have to begin your training. We are also going to tell you why you need them. Remember that you can always get more things than the ones we mention, but this is only the basics and most required ones you must get. So, shall we?
Dummies: These are the things you are going to use for the rest of your training life! There are several different types of training dummies. Some are the simple ones that teach you where to hit a human body depending on how badly you want to hurt it. Others, are the in-combat dummies. These dummies are made out of wood, and they have several sword-like sticks sticking out of the main body. When hit they spin in place. They are specially designed to simulate combat. Of course there are newer dummies which are for far more experienced fighters but we won’t get into those seeing as you are not yet experienced. To start your training we will only require that you have both the simple and the in-combat dummies.

James stopped reading, his mouth gaping. He had only read three paragraphs so far, and he already knew something he hadn’t known before. He would have never guessed there were different types of dummies, but now that he did know, he had to figure out how he was going to get them. He closed the book, he would go down the list one item at a time. He hid it behind the rock, and blew out the torches before walking back outside.

The Sun was beginning to set by the time he got home. He walked inside to find the table set for dinner and his mother seating there, waiting for him. He sat down across from her and looked at his plate to find his favorite meal, fried spicy fish, on it. He looked up to see his mother smiling at him and he immediately knew someone had told her about him trying to join the army again and failing. He decided to not mention it unless she did, he knew she wouldn’t be happy about him planning on training himself.
“So what’d you do today?” she asked casually.
“Not much, went to Castle Town to visit Fernando,” he answered, easily lying.
“Oh how is he? He hasn’t been over for dinner in a while…”
“Couldn’t find him.” After that they ate in silence. Once he was done James washed his plate and excused himself to his room. Once he got inside he locked the door behind him and laid down on his bed, staring at the all-white ceiling like he always did when he wasn’t tired. Suddenly, a tapping on his window disturbed him. He turned to see Fernando there, smiling. James got up and opened the window, “You know it is very rude to knock on people’s windows.”
“Hey at least I knocked,” he said as he jumped in. His usual longer-than-other-people’s black hair had been trimmed short, probably a rule enforced by the army. He landed with a quiet thud on the floor and jumped on James’ bed. He put his arms behind his head as he kicked off his shoes and turned to look at James. He grinned, his green eyes glinting in the candlelight. “Wow Jimmy, you look terrible.” James laughed, Fernando was the only one who could call him Jimmy and get away with it.
“It’s nice to see you too, Fer,” James said, sitting down at the edge of the bed.
“Whoever said it was nice to see you?” Fer joked, smiling innocently.
James smiled. “Nice haircut,” he said.
“Meh,” Fer answered, “I’ve seen better…could’ve been worse anyway. Imagine if they had made me shave my eyebrows or something, what would the world do without my beauty?!” He made a face that actually made him looked worried, then just laughed, as did James.
“So, what brings you here on this fine evening?” James asked, and Fer smiled, a glint in his eye.
