Prologue
Four men sat around a table, talking in low voices. One suddenly spoke louder, his face contorted in rage. “No! We will not kill the poor kids, they are as innocent as can be!” He stood up to make his point seem stronger, bulging his muscles as he did so. He had dark hair tainted with grey here and there. His eyes glowed brown in the candlelight. Suddenly another man also stood up, this one’s hair was red, and it was cut short. He looked younger than the others, yet he seemed to be the one in charge,
“How many times will we go over this Marion? There is no other way! Those kids must die!” This started yet another argument, and there had already been many that same night. Only one person remained in his seat, his eyes were closed and a hood covered his aged face, casting a shadow over it. He seemed to be asleep, but he was really just in deep thought, for he wasn’t in that room for the same reasons the others were.
“That is enough! I’ve had enough of your little fits, and I will tolerate no more of them under my roof!” exclaimed the second man, whose name was Frederic. Without second thought Marion drew his sword, but Frederic was faster than him. In the wink of an eye he had drawn his own sword and stabbed Marion across the heart with it. Marion gave a little gasp, then stumbled back onto his chair as his eyes rolled into his head, and he was gone. His sword slipped from his hand and hit the floor, making a loud clang as it made contact. Immediately the rest of the men went silent and sat back down, while the cloaked man hadn’t even twitched. Frederic turned back to the others, “OK, now that that is taken care of, shall we execute the plan?”
“The only thing that will be executed tonight, will be you, Frederic.”
Everyone’s eyes flashed to the sound of the new voice, even the cloaked man looked up. Frederic turned to have his eyes meet with those of the new man. His dirty-blonde hair fell in bangs on his forehead, and the crest of the Hylian Army shone on his shoulder. At this the rest of the men stood up and made for the door, but someone was blocking it already: the cloaked man.
“I’m sorry gentleman, but I’m afraid you won’t be getting away so easily,” he said as the men drew their swords. The man moved fast like a ninja, kicking and trashing. Soon all the swords lay on the ground, and the men stood there, frozen in place by fear.
“Thank you for your help, Jacques,” said the newcomer, his eyes still staring into Frederic’s.
“My pleasure Andrew,” responded the cloaked man.
“Ah, I finally get to meet the infamous Andrew, captain of the Hylian Army,” said Frederic, a smile creeping up on his face.
“Indeed,” answered the newcomer. Suddenly the sound of someone running into the room caught the attention of everyone.
“Papa, what’s going on?” said an utmost innocent voice. Its owner was a boy, roughly 10 years old. His young face pale white in the light of the candlelight. His blue eyes glittering in the shadows, his red hair cut short, just like his father’s.
“Chase! Go back to your room at once, I will be there in a minute,” said Frederic, but Chase didn’t have a chance to move, before Andrew talked again.
“I am afraid, Frederic, that you won’t, ever again. You have caused enough trouble in the past, and you will not be allowed to do so anymore.” Frederic’s eyes widened, showing the slightest hint of fear in them.
“What does he mean, papa?” asked Chase, but Frederic didn’t have a second to respond, for Andrew had already slashed at him with his sword, cutting him across the chest deeply, a deathly blow. The sound of Chase’s scream was drowned out by the sound of men entering the house and taking in custody the other men, while Jacques was nowhere to be seen. All this happened as Chase’s tears started running down his face, the body of his papa crumpling to the ground in front of him.
Chapter One
“Ah! I hate this! I don’t understand why she won’t let me join!” James was saying to himself. He was just coming from the Castle, where he had again been denied signing up for the army. He just couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t let him join even if it was his lifelong dream. No, he did understand. He knew it was because of his mother. She had given the captain precise orders not to let him join. He didn’t know why though, so he was always angry at her. She always came up with the excuse that he was just ten, “Too young to join.” But that wasn’t true; his friend Fernando had enlisted a year earlier, when he was just nine. “Why can’t you just let me do what I want!?” he was yelling to the skies while closing his eyes, just as a small rock caused him to lose his balance and fall flat on his face. When he stood up and opened his eyes, he found that he had actually walked into a cavern. Everything was dark and cold. The walls were rough, and filled with cracks. The ceiling wasn’t too high, but even if he stood as tall as he could and stretched as far as he would go, he still couldn’t touch it. The cave itself wasn’t very big either, but it wasn’t too small. An idea suddenly popped into his head. That was when he started feeling the Sun on his neck. He turned around to see the great Hyrule Field, completely tainted with orange by a magnificent sunset.
“Oh no,” James said to himself, “I need to hurry home.” He turned around towards the cavern and smiled at the big plans he had for it. Then he ran outside and turned around one last time to look at the cavern, only to find that he couldn’t see it. He walked back to where he had come and once again was inside it. “What the?” he thought. He walked back outside and realized that the walls of the cave camouflaged with the ones outside, hiding the cave from sight. He quickly grabbed the sharpest rock he could find and carved an “x” on the wall, so he could find the cave later. He then turned around and started running back to Kakariko Village, back to his home. “I’m definitely going back tomorrow,” he thought.
“James! Breakfast time!” a voice called, but James didn’t move. “Honey! Wake up!” the same voice called again, but once more, James didn’t move one bit. Suddenly the door was flung open, making James jump out of bed. “I said it’s breakfast time!” James’ mom said to him, “Now quickly get dressed and come to the table.” She then turned around and left, closing the door behind her. James sighed; she couldn’t wait five more minutes? He thought. He looked around his room and thought, I really need to clean my room, it is a total mess. The floor was full of dirty clothes, pieces of paper, and just any kinds of trash. He walked to his bathroom carefully, since he didn’t want to get anything stuck on his feet. Once he got there, he looked at himself in the mirror. His dirty-blonde hair covered his ears partially, and his grey eyes looked as though he hadn’t slept at all last night. He smiled, I didn’t sleep last night. He had actually stayed up thinking about his plans for the cave the entire night. He then proceeded to grab his usual gray shirt, his usual black pants, and his usual dirty-white shoes. After getting dressed he exited his room, locking the door behind him. As soon as he entered the dining room, the smell of eggs hit his nose. He sat down and began eating. Once he was finished he took his plates to the sink, and left them there. Then he grabbed his black jacket and went outside, yelling back, “I’ll be home later!”
James started walking through Kakariko, hearing many, “Hello James!” on the way. He waved back but didn’t stop to say hi. He didn’t have time, he was on a hurry. His first stop today, Hyrule Castle. Once he exited Kakariko, he started running. It would’ve taken him almost half a day to get there, if it hadn’t been for a friend of his mom, Mr. Blackcat. Mr. Blackcat had been taking some food to the Castle Town Market, so he offered James a ride in his wagon. James gladly took it, and about an hour later, they arrived at the Castle Town.
“Thanks Mr. Blackcat!” James called out as he got off at the entrance.
“No problem ma’ boy! Anytime!” Mr. Blackcat called back. James then proceeded to walk all the way to the Castle Gate. Once the guard saw him, he recognized James immediately.
“Jameson Borgon, not again!” the guard exclaimed.
“Hello, Geronimo, how have you been?” James asked the man, who looked like he was in his late 40’s.
“Well James, I have been fine. Of course, that was ‘till you showed up. Now I’m just wondering, what does he want now?” the man that went by the name of Geronimo answered. James smiled and walked forward to hug his old friend. For three years they’d known each other, and in all of those three years, James had always loved Geronimo like family.
“It’s good to see you too Geronimo,” James said. Geronimo smiled and hugged James back. Geronimo motioned James to a chair nearby so James sat down, then sat down himself.
“So tell me my boy, what brings you hear on such a wonderful day?” asked Geronimo.
“Well, I don’t know if you heard,” James began, “but I was denied entrance to the army…”
“Yes, I heard about that, I’m sorry.” answered Geronimo.
“Don’t mention it,” said James, “I don’t care, not anymore.” When he said that, Geronimo looked really surprised.
“Really? But I thought it was your lifelong dream to join the army!”
“It was, but after being rejected a hundred times, and knowing that it will never happen, it’s not anymore. You see, I finally realized that if I want to become a good fighter, the army isn’t the right way.” Now Geronimo was really intrigued, and he showed it by leaning forward.
“So, what do you have in mind?” Geronimo asked. James thought of all the plans he had, there was certainly a lot going through his mind.
“Well, where to start…” James answered, with a mischievous smile on his face.
