    Around the World

    Elliot:

    I’ve always wanted to travel the world. The idea of venturing out and seeing everything there is to see is thrilling. Unfortunately, I’m a broke college student that doesn’t see myself doing that anytime soon. So this is where you guys come in! I’m asking you all to post pictures of some awesome places and famous landmarks that you personally have been to. Document your travels and experiences, tell me what it was like, share everything you can. And hopefully, one day, we’ll have something from every part of the world.

    I’ll even start things off myself, with…

    South Carolina: Myrtle Beach


    This is one of the places I went to on vacation. And lookit that, the beachgoers even left everyone a nice welcoming message! I took this picture on the 12th floor balcony of my hotel room.


    The beach itself was very beautiful and the air was great. My family and I walked along the coast for a nice relaxing while, just listening to the sounds of the waves hitting the shore. You can see the Ferris wheel further back in the picture.


    At the end of the beach, there were a lot of attractions to see. There were tons of Ripley’s Believe it or Not exhibits ( none of which, to my despair, we went to D; ) and lots of stores, like a gift shop with some cheerful happy dolphins as a theme.


    There were even some rides to go on, though we never did. I guess we went here mostly for the beach =d

    But that’s okay, because like I said, the view at the beach is beautiful, especially at sunrise! My dad took this next picture with my camera at 6 in the morning while everyone else was asleep like normal people. Purdy, innit?


    Not sure if it was my dad or me that took this, or if it’s even a sunrise or sunset (I must’ve taken off the timestamp so it wouldn’t ruin the effect of some of the more scenic pictures I was trying to take) but it’s still pretty neat. Oh noes, the sky is on fire.


    This one I for sure took myself during sundown.


    It’s even nice in the mornings! Just look at that reflection!

        Took this picture on the same night I took the sundown picture.


        And we were lucky we happened to be there on a Wednesday night, because it turns out every Wednesday they make fireworks. I tired taking pictures of it but they all came out pretty smeared looking and icky since it was so dark. Oh well.

        Florida: Universal Studios

        The second part of my and my family’s vacation, the famous Universal Studios.


        Our first stop? The Seuss Landing. We had planned on going to the Harry Potter place right away before the line started getting long, but since this was on the way, my mom insisted we stop here first.

          And the first ride we rode? That Cat in the Hat ride. Now you’d think this is a kid’s ride, right?Well it’s not D: This ride was scary as fuuuuuudge. The Cat in the Hat in this ride, I swear to goodness gracious, had like evil black eyes with no friggin pupils that seemed to stare into your very soul and there was one part where you start spinning around and around while you’re strapped into your seat and surrounded by some trippy seizure-inducing background.


          Continuing on our way to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, I happened to pass this piece of paper on a post next to a store. I found it pretty interesting and thought you guys might like it too, so I made sure to take a pic. It’s designs for a coin medallion. I was really tempted to buy that Traveler’s Symbol one, because, you know, it’d help me feel more in character when I’m writing posts for Elliot D: I couldn’t find it on display though, so I figured they were out. Sadness!



          And here we finally are, at the entrance to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I made sure to take extra pictures here since I know a lot of you are Harry Potter fans. See I was still thinking about you guys while on vacation D:


          My older sister bought a glass of butterbeer for us to share and it actually tasted pretty good! Like a cream soda with a hint of buttery flavoring. That might sound kind of nasty but I promise you it’s gotta be the best tasting drink I’ve ever had.

            Yep, there’s the train to Hogwarts.



            This is where that one often mentioned Harry Potter ride takes place. It’s a mix of live action and 3-D effects, so the ride was very realistic. It had some legit freaky parts too, and I’m not talking Cat in the Hat creepy, but friggin realistic looking Dementors coming after you creepy D: It was a fairly long ride too, so the 30 minute wait in line was worth it. Now this ride has alot of moving going on. I'm talkin' sudden twists and turns, so if you’re prone to motion sickness, you’ll have to be careful.


            We walked around more and we saw that there was a lot of shows to watch, like the adventures of Sinbad…


            …or aggro stunts, which consisted of people doing skateboard/bike tricks on the ramps and people on motorcycles spinning around that little round cage there (with a person inside of it no less)

              …or more 4-D shows.


              We walked all around the area, from Toon Lagoon, which housed many cartoon characters from comic strips or shows...


              ...to Jurassic Park.


              There were also shows that were more like a tour but still amazing.

                But this was one of my favorite rides. Mostly because it went at fast speeds and sometimes went backwards and had great special effects.

                I’d show you one of the coolest main attraction ride next, but by this time my camera died. The ride is called the Rip Ride Rocket roller coaster. On the ride, you get to choose a song from an extensive list they have and it’ll play as you ride through all those steep drops and zip through the tracks. It films you as your riding so afterwards you can turn your experience into a music video. Unfortunately, that’s all I know about it since it started to rain when it was nearly me and my sister’s turn to go on and they had to shut the rides D’: We must’ve waited in line for about an hour, and then waited an additional 45 minutes to see if it’d reopen.

                We watched some other shows and went on a few other rides, like the Simpson’s roller coaster ride (there was even a Quik-E-Mart store in this section of the area too, and they were selling energizer drinks in a Duff Beer can!), a Men in Black sort of shooter game ride, and the classic E.T. ride which my parents and older sister kept teasing me about because apparently when I was younger that ride traumatized the shizzlefohizzle out of me D:

                There’s one other show I’d like to highly recommend. We didn’t go to it this time around again since paying for the tickets once was already a lot, but last summer when we went to Universal and we were just aimlessly walking around the boardwalk since we couldn’t get in (my mom had forgotten our admission tickets, of all things D: ), we saw advertisements for something called the Blue Man Group. With not much else to do, we decided to go for it. What we discovered was an amazing, talented (and most humourous) trio of a group. The show was filled with unique, energetic music and lots of audience participation to always keep you on your toes and never bored. After the show, we were able to meet the group too, and they gave us their signature in the form of a blue thumb print. If I could go again, I most definitely would. It’s certainly something to experience more than once.

                Washington DC: Monuments and Museums
                Not where we went to on vacation, but since we live maybe only an hour away from it, it makes sense that we’d visit our country’s national monuments and historical museums and so I’ll just put that here too. Sorry for the lack of pictures here though, it’s been a while since we went there and I seem to have lost most of the photos I’ve ever taken of the museums and stuff.



                Sure were a lot of stairs leading up to this big fellow. Inscribed on the sides of the walls here was the famous Gettysburg Address speech that Lincoln made.



                And this here is, of course, the Washington Monument, standing 555 feet tall, and behind it the White House.

                  And during the spring time, Washington DC holds a Cherry Blossom festival, in which you can watch special performances and take part in other activities, like singing and dancing and drinking sake and trying out some asian themed snacks from the food vendors. There was even a section where cosplayers from famous animes gathered! I remember seeing Inuyasha and Kagome in the flesh. Me and my younger sis totally forced them into taking pictures with us. This is the J-Pop section and it’s every anime fan’s dream. Doing some research on it now, I see that there was also a store where you could buy swords, posters, manga, anime, etc. Dang, how could I have missed that?

                      Welcome to Maryland, National Harbor, home of the place where I spent my Saturday! The event going on? Katsucon 18, where gamers and anime-lovers alike can come together and revel in all that is geeky and awesome.

                      When we arrived, the line was already very long.

                      Like no joke man that line curves in a zigzag and we waited there for about 3 hours.

                      But it was totally worth it cause while we waited, I took some pictures of people dressed in costumes.

                      There were a lot of Pokemon.

                      This guy was walking around a lot.

                      This guy not so much.

                      Erm...Silent Hill, yes? Pyramid head? Very nice.

                      And of course, lots of Link!

                      I ran straight to this guy and asked to take his pic. Best Link costume I saw that day.
                      When we finally got our passes, there were more pictures to be taken.

                      Like of Pokemon trainers! Actually there was this pair of cosplayers going as a caterpie and a bug catcher, it was some nice coordination.

                      No doubt playing Super Mario.

                      There were tons of other great costumes too, like from Howl's Moving Castle, Dr.Who, etc. It was, as my dad said, "like being in an alternate universe." There were also lots of events and movies to watch. One of the events we'd went to was called Super Art Fight, where two players draw on a big canvas, and every 5 minutes a new theme comes up that they have to incorporate in the picture, making for some...interesting pictures XD

                      But my favorite event of all was the Masquerade, in which people dressed up show off their costumes on stage and perform skits! And mind you, there were a lot of hilarious skits! Sadly, there was only one Zelda themed one, but in my terribly biased opinion, it was the best skit there! Here's a vid I recorded of it if you want to see, but be warned, it's pretty low quality and I kept having to move around because people kept getting in my way. The sadness of being of short stature :< Still, it was very well done and coordinated. The skit is basically a re-telling of the events of OoT.

                      And that about sums up adventures in Katsucon! Really, if you ever get the chance, you should go, if just for the masquerade. It's a great experience and I'm going to remember it for a long time.
                      Oh yeah, and in the beginning of the masquerade show, one of the people on stage actually proposed to someone :3 Thankfully, she said yes (would've been pretty embarrassing for the dude if she'd just walked out), and the whole crowd was like "dawww!" So that was another awesome first experience for me, witnessing that happening.
