  • Computer vs Console Discussion Thread

Hey, guys. By the title, you should know what we'll be discussing today. And though I'm sure I know what most of you are going to say, I just made this thread so we can discuss our opinions and understand the opinions of others. Also, notice that I say 'discuss' and this is a 'discussion' thread, so don't try to make this a heated argument. If it should come to that, I'll either delete the posts or the thread. This is a peaceful discussion, so all we're doing is stating our opinion, then questioning the opinions of others, if needed. Your first post should include your own opinion and anything you might have to say about somebody else's post. I'll go first.

As you guys might know, I'm kind of in between, but leaning towards consoles. Below are the advantages and disadvantages of both in my opinion. The positives will have a plus sign, and the negatives will have a subtraction sign. After the advantage/disvantage, I will put a example of where that advantage/disadvantage comes from in parenthesis (if that doesn't make sense, just look at the list and you'll get it). If you see just a D in parenthesis, then that means I'll probably be talking about it.

    Consoles:
    + More accessible
    + Better multiplayer (Xbox 360)(D)
+ Better exclusives (Any Nintendo System)
    + More well-known (D)
    - Pay to have online multiplayer (Xbox 360)(D)
    - Worse graphics(D)
    - Worse community..?(D)
    - Pay to be able to record gameplay

    Computers:
    +Better graphics (D)
    +Steam sales (D)
    +Better community..?(D)
+No need to pay for online
+No need to pay to be able to record gameplay
    -Worse multiplayer (D)
    -Worse exclusives (D)

Before I go on with my post, keep in mind this is my opinion, which is based on from what I know, so if I say something that isn't true (fact-based, not opinion based), then feel free to correct me (also, just so we're clear, I'm taking the consoles' side in this).

I think we can all agree that console gaming is more well known. I mean, which did you play on the most as a child: a console, or a computer? I think most of us here know that we played on consoles more.
Also, from what I know, the multiplayer is miles better on consoles. I mean, sure, you have to pay for it on the Xbox, but it is amazing. If you want to talk on Minecraft, you either have to use the chat, which will undoubtedly slow you down and leave you prone to attack, or you have to run Skype in the background, which could possibly make your game lag. I'm not sure how you talk to people on Steam, so if anybody could explain that in a post, that'd be great.
Yes, I know, the graphics are better on the computers. But, keep in mind, most of us here play Nintendo games, on Nintendo consoles, which comparatively have the worst graphics on the market. But does that stop us from loving their games, whether it be Legend of Zelda or Mario? No. So really, graphics are irrelevant in this topic, and I only really brought them up to prove a point.
And yes, I know, the community on consoles are full of 'squeakers' and loud, obnoxious people who swear. But trust me, some of them have Steam accounts. They just aren't the well known menace they are on consoles.

If there's one thing I believe the consoles will always beat computers in, it's exclusives. I'll admit : the games exclusive to PCs are good games, and the developers have good ears. But for me? I'd prefer killing stuff as the Master Chief or beating the crap out of people with Mario over DOTA and Team Fortress 2. Now, I know Team Fortress and the first two Halos were on consoles and computers, but from everybody who has played those games know that the true Halo/Team Fortress experience is on the Xbox/PC (respectively).

Alright, well, that's my opinion. If you guys respond to this, please be sure to first state your opinion on this matter, THEN go and nitpick at what I said. Remember, this is a peaceful discussion, so try not to stir up an argument.

this is my opinion, and if it seems nit-picky I'm sorry Z

I Have, and always will, prefer console gaming. I believe computer gaming is just too awkward, like, the way you control it, its too easy to press a button you didn't mean to, at least with consoles you are less likely to do so.

I also believe the graphics and community don't matter.... well, graphics do matter but not to the extreme, for example, I still prefer the original ocarina of time over the remake, the remake may have better graphics but I personally believe the controls were more wonky on the 3DS then the 64.

as for community, I personally don't like playing games online, there I said, I don't like it. maybe that's because I cant stand shooters (and to be fair the majority is shooters) maybe its because it seems like I'm doing the same thing over and over again, maybe its because I prefer to face people I know, or maybe its because I'm just an anti-social person, I just don't like it.

I'm sure there are people out there (not necessarily on the site) the will say I'm bias against computer gaming because of my strong dislike for online multiplayer, but its not that at all, I have given it its fair chance, I could just never get into it.

so that's pretty much it, oh and just so you all know, I do enjoy multiplayer, just not online.... I mean honestly, its way more fun when your sitting right next to someone on the couch screaming at the TV and at each other because the other ones is "cheating"

I'm a computor person. Sure, console's are fun, but the majority of them are first person fighters or racing games. That's fun and all, but I prefer the strategy that computors give me. Age of Mythology, Zeus and Poseidon, Warcraft III, etc. Games that involve me controlling a massive, or not so massive, group or city and keeping track of everything that happens, games that make me a diety basically, those are the games I like. Games that challenge me to think creatively or puzzle my brain, like Square Logic and Pandora's Box. Then there's games that let me play with or against my brother, like Warcraft or AoM. Strategy that makes us try to figure out the best way to defeat our computor opponents.

I like consoles for their greater mobility, and some of the games on there are puzzling and challenging enough that I love them, like the Legend of Zelda or this series I recently discovered, Prince of Persia. Often the stories are better too. But computor games challenge me more. Some of my favorites, like Amazon Trail, even teach me stuff, like my books do. When i play a game, I want something that will make me think, without making me do it like a reflex, such as a fighting game would. I like games that challenge my mind, make me think, better than I like games that force me to react quickly. Gantd, when my city is under attack, I do have to respond quickly. However, generally I'm prepared for the attack ahead of time, even having units waiting to respond with as little guidance needed as possible.

And Z, I do have to laugh at your comment about spending more time on consoles. I have been playing stuff on the computor since i was real little, as part of my school curriculum, while the consoles were my dad's territory until i was about nine, maybe eight. After that, I played on them about equally, but the discovery of the internet when i was about eleven kinda tipped the scales towards the computor, especially after getting involved with forums two years ago.

I'm surprised you are a computer person, HBC. You should've said something. Or maybe you did, and I forgot about it already. Whatever the case, I know now.

I just have to laugh about your comment on consoles being mostly FPS and racing games. I got three words for you: Sony and Nintendo. Sure, both have a few games of those genres here and there, but the majority of the games that come out on their consoles are NOT first person shooters and racing games. That argument is only valid against the Xbox. I'm surprised you even said that, being a Nintendo fan yourself.

Mids, I agree with most of your post, but I enjoy multiplayer online and offline.

Z asked about talking on PC. So I'll answer as I am avidly a PC gamer.

Talking on a PC is, to my knowledge, not that much different from talking on a 360. The only difference is that voice chat is sometimes handled by the games independently(less common now, usually it's dealt with by steam). Microphone set-up is easy, provided your microphone works with Windows already. Every game purchased through Steam has the Steam overlay when launched with Steam. This overlay contains things like a simple web browser, links to your friends page, as well as chat capabilities. You can do voice calls through Steam to talk to friends/users who aren't necessarily in your lobby. Steam has push-to-talk features built in, as do many games(Not enough people use them, though...). Lots of games have text chat built in, and some people use Skype to talk to their friends without disturbing the rest of a lobby, but if you use a "gaming" computer the processor load is negligible. Overall, not that much different from my knowledge of 360 chat.

Edit: In response to your argument, HBC, consoles are not all shooters and racers. Racers are more popular on consoles because their controls are more suited(Sticks work better for steering then keys, due to the fact they don't have black and white "on and off" states.). It seems you enjoy computers more because you enjoy Real Time Strategy/Turn-Based Strategy games. These games don't work on consoles. People have tried. All I ever read about them was bad controls. Console games can also make you think too, but perhaps just not in the same way. I myself prefer PC games, but this is due to more accessibility(All my PC games are on my hard drive, ready to be played at a moment's notice) and mods. Since I own a laptop for my gaming, it is also more portable, and the games are cheaper more frequently.

          I can't think of a conclusion.

I didn't say shooters, did I? I thought I just first-person or fighting. I majorly dislike shooters, but most of the games I play/know on consoles are fighting in general, not just shooting. I mean, the Prince of Persia series are fighting. The difference between it and the other fighting games my brother loves is that the fight scenes are rare and easy to get through. The main draw to these games is the puzzle. How do I get through this room? Do I need to climb that wall and push the switch, or use the bar to swing onto that ledge? So I run along the wall to get past this gap, or am I supposed to climb down and around it? Zelda have similar puzzles, perhaps more complex, but fun nonetheless. In the Pokemon games, it's a matter of figuring out the weakness of my foe, playing it like a chess game. I can take as long as I need or want to before I decide how I am going to counter-attack and defeat my foe. Granted, I have lost my taste for the latest Pokemon games, since I find them lacking in something (don't ask me what because I can't answer that), but from Gen IV back, I love the games a lot.

Now the advantage of computer games is an increase in strategy. I have yet to find a game on the console that requires half the strategy that a game of Starcraft with my brother requires. I have tried games like Sim City for the SNES, but I very much prefer games like Zeus. Very similar, but it isn't the same. Building a city, whether for war or peace, and watching it flourish into the world power is more satisfying than most anything I can find with a console. I love seeing my enemies fall before my troops, or even simply watching my Greek city mature from a tiny village, to the more powerful city, economically and militarily. Directing my troops to destroy an enemy camp or sending them off to conquer an enemy city. I am a goddess in those games, and few things can match the sense of power that gives me, or the pride at watching my cities grow and rule.

Well, in either case HBC, last time I checked, most games from Nintendo are in 3rd person or....whatever you call the camera from Super Smash Bros. But changing it from shooting to fighting does make it more of a valid point.

I understand now that your decision is widely based on opinion. You like games that are puzzling or require strategy, so of course, the computer is the natural choice. On a side note, have you ever tried Portal? Great game. I know you don't have an Xbox or a PS3, but it is on the computer. In my opinion, the consoles versions are preferable, because they don't have random loading sequences, but it's the same game. I'm sure you'd get a kick out of playing it.

Though I don't have much to say about your post, BC, you bring up a moot point. Steam sales (Summer or Winter) are amazing. You can constantly find games for under $10 or $5. I forgot to bring that up in my post, but that is a definite advantage over consoles.

So, for me, I would be more of a PC gamer, but as I once said in the shoutbox, my computer can only run Half Life, Portal, and Team Fortress. I try to run something else, but it refuses to work. Luckily, I have not wasted money on a game, only to find that it doesn't work. Demos FTW.

Not to mention, I have a lot of friends who are console gamers. One of them is also a PC gamer, but my computer can't run the games his computer can. If that was possible, I'd probably be playing Borderlands 1 with him right now.

Also, I prefer the consoles because that's what I grew up with. I'm used to running around as Sonic and ruining Eggman's plans with a controller. Playing it on the computer would ruin it for me. Some games are meant for the consoles, and some are meant for the computer. And the ones I like? They're made for the consoles.

PC boasts mods as well. Mods can do tons of stuff(I'm going to use Skyrim as an example.), and give PC major leverage over consoles. Some mods add stuff(the Immersive Armors mod adds over 50(?) armor sets.), fix things(the Unofficial Skyrim Patch fixes lots of stuff Bethesda won't.), or improve the game(SkyUI overhauls Skyrim's inventory screens, giving them features suited for PC and doing away with the console-styled interface.). I'll usually buy PC if I can because of mods. Graphics also. If you've got a heavy-duty rig with a good GPU(which I hope to) and run games on high/ultra, often the graphics are better than on consoles. Consoles are better because games will almost always run the same across all versions of a console, while it's usually a chance with PC.
