    Kindle VS Book

    Basically this thread is so I can hear your opinions on this matter. I'm pretty certain you must all know what a Kindle is. If you don't, here's(click) a picture of it and a description. And if anyone doesn't know what a book is, I will grab one and smack you with it.
    Anyways, my sisters recently got me a kindle as a gift. I love the idea of a Kindle. I mean so many books can be accessed through one item. So much reading material on the palm of your hand. The Kindle opens doors that allow for great reading, a lot of fun, and basically just awesomeness.
    However, on the other hand we have books. Now books have been around for way longer than the Kindle, obviously. In my opinion, books have something that Kindle's can never have. The amazing smell of starting a fresh new adventure when you open it. The feeling of each page turning in your fingers. Being able to hold it in your hands and know that you're not only getting a story with this book, but an experience. Maybe I'm biased, but I think the Kindle won't ever be able to replace the experiences that books have brought me. When I was little I always enjoyed the cold Winters. I would crawl onto the couch with a pillow, a comfy blanket, a delicious cup of hot chocolate, and a Harry Potter book. I could stay immersed in the grandeur of the moment all day, and the only thing that was missing would be the snow falling outside and the fireplace by my side :P
    So my point is that the cold metallic Kindle is great, but will never replace books.
    What is your opinion? Do you prefer the experiences that are books on your hands, or would you rather have thousands of books on your hand at the same time?

    Book, duh. Not only do you get that satisfying sound of the turning page, but you feel better using it as a weapon.

    Course you have to carry more, but people these days could use the strength training.
    So I'm back, or at least I will be eventually. Trying to reintegrate myself.

      I like the idea of having like, ten books for the weight of one, but the Kindle doesn't allow us to do the one thing everybody does, wether they admit it or not.

      Opening a book to the middle and taking a deep wiff of dat paper smell.

          True dat, V, true dat. Paper smell is a better medicine than any darn pill. *sniffs*
          And I'm sure using a book as a weapon is better than a Kindle, BC, but still D8

            I don't think bashing ability is a trait that will decide pro's or con's. The kindle costs more then a book but digital books usually cost less then a normal book, so you are saving in the long run. With the kindle you can zoom in, and just press a button to change pages for a slightly faster read.

              I love to be able to grab a book from the shelf in the library and just read it because I like the cover art. (does kindle have a library?) I also like having the kindle because I get more books at a time. In the long run, though, I think I prefer the freedom of the book. I can take it outside and read it without any difficulty, no matter how bright the sun is, and I don't have to sit by the outlet when the battery's low, but the story's too thrilling to put down.

                I'd rather rest assured that my reading won't be interrupted by low batteries, or that the reading device won't get destroyed if I take it with me. Books are pretty sturdy. An electronic device could get easily damaged, whether by water (like if you're reading outside and it starts to rain) or if it gets smashed in my backpack or if I drop it. So I prefer the reliability of books.
                Reading is my chance to step away from the electronics and take a breather. So many things I do nowadays have to do with electronics--using the computer, watching TV, going on my ipod, using my cellphone. If I get a kindle, that'll be yet another electronic I'll become reliant on, and I'd rather not have that.

                Besides. Books make better paperweights.

                  Wait, wait, wait. Kindle has a charge, so there's technically a time limit. But Kindle won't give you a papercut... but given how much technology has been advancing as of late, I take it it won't be long before it can.

                  Books don't have a charge, so you can read them as much as you like... although it's much easier to mutilate the pages(Not to say mutilating a Kindle is necessarily hard... try it sometime). And don't get me started on iBooks.

                    I agree with all the charging issues and stuff, but Killer makes a good point. The Kindle does allow you to save up money in the long run. However, is saving some cash worth sacrificing the freedom and feeling of reading a book? I'm not so sure. Even with the paper cuts :P

                      Reading books will NEVER be replaced by kindles for me. The satisfaction of turning pages, the paper smell, the awkward position I lay in my bed to read the book late at night. Just the feeling and the magic of the book is something that can not be replaced by an electronic device. Sure you may save a few bucks but I think that all the stuff mentioned above is worth a few extra dollars.

                        In my life...I have read thousands of PDFs, online articles, emails, etc...but I have only read one book. That book was Dr Seuss' "Oh the Places You'll Go"...and that was 20 years ago. Of all the places I will go, those places do not include book stores or libraries.

                        Books may be thousands of years old...but everything has an expiry date. With everything going digital, every idiot and their grandmother being an environmental hippy, and the greater and greater demand for portability, compact-ability, and instantaneous and spontaneous access to information...books are going the way of the Dodo. Why flip through hundreds of pages when you can press ctrl-f or press the little magnify glass to search thousands of pages. It is not even just the Kindle, but every Tablet device going has a book store. They even have the Holy Bible...in digital format. Even God went digital. I would not be surprised that in the next few years, when you are sitting in court, you will be putting your hand on an iPad or other E-Reader with the words "Holy Bible" on it. I think the only thing that is not in digital format is the Dead Sea Scrolls...and even then...I am not totally sure about that.

                        Reading isn't about tactile pleasure, or smell, or starting an adventure. If you want an adventure that includes touch and smell...wrap your Kindle in paper and engage into that story.

                        Like it or not...books are finished.

                        Then again...I am the same guy who thinks all Libraries should be abolished because the Internet is better. What a waste of tax payer money...
