  • Super Smash Bros for Wii U Review

For the past four days, I've had the privilege of playing Super Smash Bros for Wii U, the most recent entry in the Super Smash Bros series. I have been waiting for this game ever since I unlocked all the characters and stages in Super Smash Bros Brawl about five/six years ago. Does the game live up to my expectations? Let's see.

    Modes:
Due to a lack of story in this game, I will be going over the all the modes in the game in this section. In 'Smash' section, there are three modes. You have the regular Smash mode, where you and up to 3 friends/computers can duke it out as Nintendo characters. Special Smash returns, serving the same purpose as Smash, but with the ability to set special settings like handicap damage, fast movement speed, etc. A new addition here is 8-Player Smash, which is just like normal Smash, but with more people and restricted to the bigger stages. All three modes are great and provide hours upon hours of fun (and beating the crap of pretty much any Nintendo character you can think of).
In 'Smash Tour'. you play a creative little board game that involves collecting/stealing characters, boosting stats, and beating the crap out of everyone else along the way. I heard some people didn't enjoy this mode, but I think it's great.
In "Games & More", you have a crap ton of modes, such as Stage Builder, Classic, Special Orders, Events, and the Stadium events (Target Blast, Multi-Man Smash, Home Run-Contest). To go through them all here would be a drag, so I'm going to keep it brief: They all provide some solid hours of different twists on Smash-y goodness, and add on immensely to the already insane amount of replay value.

    Graphics:
When Brawl came out, the graphics were among the best I've ever seen. Since then, I've seen a lot better, especially with the dawn of next-gen games in the past year. But this game, despite being on the Wii U, has some of the nicest graphics I've ever seen. Sure, it's not as realistic as other games, but it looks really nice. It's smooth, colorful, and beautiful, just like any Nintendo game should be.

    Gameplay:
This a quick How to Play video from the previous entry in the series, Super Smash Bros Brawl for the people who don't know how it works:

Again, that was from Super Smash Bros Brawl, the previous entry in the series. I couldn't find the How to Play video for Super Smash Bros for Wii U, so my apologies on that. Anyway, this next part is more for the people who have played Super Smash Bros, so if you haven't, just skip over the spoiler.

Basically, nothing much has changed in this game, which is good. It's still the great Smash fun a lot of people have come to know and love. 8-Player mode, while hectic,. provides even more fun, especially when you do Team Smash. My one gripe would be that a couple of the stages are way too big, even for 8 players, and matches can go on for a long time.

    Verdict
Usually, I'd gave a game a score, but then I realized that the numbers really don't mean anything unless you put some words next to it. So let me put it this way: This game is worth your hard-earned cash. I understand not everybody has a Wii U, but this is a definite must buy for people who do. This game is better than Brawl in almost every way, and is another solid entry in the Smash Bros franchise.
