As a movie based off a book, Percy Jackson and the Olypians: the Lightning Theif deserves two reviews. One comparing it to the book, and one for a stand-alone movie. I'll start with the first.
Compared to movie
Being based off the book, this movie failed. The plot was off and they missed several points. I see five key points that they will have to find excuses for when they make the next one. I shall list them in order of least to most important.
1. It looked very much like they killed Luke at the end of this movie. However, he plays an important role in the rest of the series. This is probably the easiest to explain away, though.
2. Thalia's tree. They never mentioned it, even in the deleted scenes, and she plays a fairly large role in the next couple books.
3. Grovers searcher liscense. This is what Grover was doing at the begining of the next book when he gets captured. I suppose they can find another excuse for this, though.
4. The deal with Ares. Percy angers Ares and gets in fights with the Ares cabin. While they could probably find an excuse for this, Ares' curse is very important, and his and Percy's confrontation at the end of the book is very important.
5. The last one I though missing, and probably the hardest to explain away, was Kronos. He haunts Percy throughout the whole book, and is the real reason Luke stole the Master Bolt. The whole series is about his and Percy's fights. Yet I did not hear his name mentioned once throughout the whole movie.
All in all, this movie failed to live up to the book. I look forward to see what they do in the next movie to make up for this one's lack.
Stand alone
On its own, this was an excellant movie. It had a great plot, excellant graphics, and sweet effects. The jokes were decent at times, pure hilarity at others. My favorite quote would probably be Chiron when Percy sees him without the wheelchair.
The fight scenes were remarkably clever, especially with the Hydra. The five turning into the Hydra. The breathing fire and the water wall. Then Medusa's head turning it to stone.
The entrance to the Underworld was cool, with the earth splitting open. The fields of fire and the screams of the damned. It was cool.
In summary, I loved this movie. While it did not match the book very well, it was a spin that was excellantly depicted. I would definatly recomend this movie to anyone into sci-fi and/or mythology. I'd just warn them that there are some points that are inaccurate to both the book and actual mythology.

Percy: You were in a wheelchair and now...
Chiron: I have a real horse's ass.
