  • SOPA and PIPA

As you may have noticed, I've been making a deal about SOPA and PIPA. Although this isn't completely directed for other nations, it does affect them. I'll just go in and explain these bills and what they are and how they affect everyone.

The Stop Online Piracy Act, or House Bill 3261, introduced October 26, 2011, will essentially give the United States the ability to enforce and detain any and all individuals linked to any copyright infringement or piracy. This bill also builds on the Senate's version of the Protect Intellectual Property Act. This bill extends into other nations around the world, as well.

    From Wikipedia.org
"The originally proposed bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as copyright holders, to seek court orders against websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement. Depending on who makes the request, the court order could include barring online advertising networks and payment facilitators from doing business with the allegedly infringing website, barring search engines from linking to such sites, and requiring Internet service providers to block access to such sites. The bill would make unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content a crime, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison for ten such infringements within six months. The bill also gives immunity to Internet services that voluntarily take action against websites dedicated to infringement, while making liable for damages any copyright holder who knowingly misrepresents that a website is dedicated to infringement."
In short, sites like Google and Youtube would be barred and erased from the internet. Any users who persist activities can be penalized in United States Court and given up to five years of prison time depending on the severity and recurrance of the crime. This is a big deal as other sites, like moddb.com or reddit.com will also be on high alert watch for illegal activity. As material is uploaded, if so much as one item breaks the law, the whole site will be permanently shut down. As of now, you are likely asking about PIPA.

PIPA, or the Protect Intellectual Property Act, is a bill aimed at removing any content that infringes on any copyright material.

    From Wikipedia.org
"The bill defines infringement as distribution of illegal copies, counterfeit goods, or anti-digital rights management technology. Infringement exists if "facts or circumstances suggest [the site] is used, primarily as a means for engaging in, enabling, or facilitating the activities described." The bill says that it does not alter existing substantive trademark or copyright law.
The bill provides for "enhancing enforcement against rogue websites operated and registered overseas" and authorizes the United States Department of Justice to seek a court order in rem against websites dedicated to infringing activities, if through due diligence, an individual owner or operator cannot be located. The bill requires the Attorney General to serve notice to the defendant. Once the court issues an order, it could be served on financial transaction providers, Internet advertising services, Internet service providers, and information location tools to require them to stop financial transactions with the rogue site and remove links to it. The term "information location tool" is borrowed from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and is understood to refer to search engines but could cover other sites that link to content."
From how I'm understanding it, sites like Age of War will be forced to either obtain permission from the copyright holder. If the site owner cannot obtain permission, then the site will be forced to either change it's content or shut down. It's a shorter version of SOPA.

Many sites have been blacking out as protest to help users draw attention to these acts and to contact your Congressmen and let them know of your opinon. This link will help you sign a petition, hosted by Google, to help formalize and legitimize the protests. http://www.google.com/takeaction/ Please every American user here, go to this link, sign the petition. TAKE ACTION! If you don't this could easily destroy the internet for everyone.

Yet another example of our failing government trying to garner money in the stupidest way possible. What are the odds that this will actually go through? Is there anything out there that's original anymore? No. *smacks Obama*

I think, well hope, the odds aren't in favor. It might be more of "Well I want to be re-elected, I don't want to be ousted by the people"

          now, to quote philosoraptor...

"If pro is the opposite of con, then what is the opposite of progress?"

What you mentioned earlier about changing to a Canadian host, has that been kinda killed off?
So I'm back, or at least I will be eventually. Trying to reintegrate myself.
My 3DS Friend Code is 3437-3052-8998. I'm usually playing the MH4U demo or MH4U(When it comes out), but I'd also be down for 3DS Smash Bros.
