To my knowledge there is not a thread for this. If it is, it must be really old, so we might as well just use this one.

Hey guys Z here and today...well, I'm sure you can guess. This thread is about the "end of the world" that everybody has been talking about for quite some time now. While those people seem to be no where in sight less than a week before they think the world is going to end, I just posted this thread to ask you, the good people of Age of War, if you seriously think the world will end in five days from the day that this thread was posted.

In my opinion, the world will not end in five days, and it won't end. At least in our lifetime. I remember people going crazy about this in fourth grade, and I was just like "These people are insane." Whatever the reason for people thinking the world is going to end (the most common reason is the end of the Mayan Calender), I find it stupid. Now, I'm sorry if that offends anyone, but it is downright stupid. I just don't believe it. Not the slightest. This is how the 21st will go:

Everyone wakes up, they will do their usual (or maybe non usual schedule because sometimes you have special stuff or surprises) schedule, and then they'll go to sleep.

And then the internent will be filled with "I told you so!"

So, reader, tell us here on Age of War what you think? Make sure to answer these three questions in some shape or form in your post:

Do you think the world will end?

What do you think about the idea of the world ending?

How do you think the 21st will go?

    *insert post ender here*

Haha Kairu my math teacher mentioned Y2K and I'm only 14 so I asked him what it was and he got all depressed because it made him feel old XD

Well for the end of the world I've always thought the only reason the Mayan Calendar ended there is because either 1. They were busy getting killed by the conquistadors and stopped or 2. They decided that 2012 was far enough in the future to take a break from making the calendar...
So basically I, like everyone else I know, don't believe in the world ending in my life. Though maybe something could happen like a magnetic pole-changey thingy or something. Last year in science we watched a video that said we might experience a polar switch during out life time. Probably not on 2012 though.

Well if the EM field did reverse it would be the end of the world because we'd be exposed to the sun's UV rays. Furthermore, I doubt the Mayans knew when the world ended. I mean, let's be realistic here. They could see the world ending 600-1000 years in the future but not see the Spanish coming? That's a flat out dumb idea. Furthermore, the rumor is of galactic alignment on that day. While it may be completely useless and meaningless to our societies, for a society based heavily on the cosmos it is significant. So it may be that that is when the Mayan culture, if it still existed, would end. I just think some idiots blew it out of proportion because they failed to use logic.

Just going to point out here, most of the Mayans weren't taken over by the Spanish conquistadors. The main Mayan civilizations vanished without trace before the Spanish even arrived. So far no real proof has been found as to what happened to them, but most historians think natural disaster or they moved some place else or something. Of course, theorists like to say ALIENS :>
Anyways, I don't think it is the end of the world. I think there are one of two possibilities.
1: The alien-Mayans will come back and show the world new stuffs o_O
2: They ran out of rock for the calendar.
Obviously I'm not serious about these options, but those are the only things I can think will actually happen/happened.
So yeah, no worldy end end.

It makes me wonder how long their year was, because wouldn't their calendar take up a lot of space since it was made on stone? That would be weird if they had a 360 day year ;o

If I remember elementary history right, their year was about 570-some years in our time idk. I think I'm spouting crap, but I have a hunch their year was significantly longer. Maybe 500 days or so. Idrk

I read that 12/21/12 is something of... what was it... a 'turnaround' point in the Mayan calender. To my knowledge, it was like going from 3000 BC to 3000 AD.\

But this is a hoax. Scientific evidence has proven it. There are no asteroids, rogue planets what have you on a course for Earth. We'd know years in advance if there were. I believe there will be a planetary alignment on that day, and the sun, Earth, and the Milky Way's core/center will align, although this particular event happens on an annual basis, so nothing special there.

This is the peak in a 13 year cycle of solar activity, but according to Popular Science it's one of the wimpiest ones in fifty years.

I find the idea of a world ending to be utter hocum, at least the idea of it ending without knowledge preceding it. When the Sun grows to a red giant there is a possibility the world will burn up/be swallowed, although that won't be for billions of years.

In short, I don't know who came up with it, but on the 21st I plan to go to school, celebrate the beginning of holidays, then come home and play Planetside 2 until my hand is frozen into the shape of my mouse.
So I'm back, or at least I will be eventually. Trying to reintegrate myself.

I read on tumblr a few days ago that there'd be some cool celestial alignment that'll plunge the world in darkness for three days or somethin'?
I dunno this is tumblr we're talking about.

But really I'm just watching the skies for the moon.
And then if the next day it rains, and the day after that the moon shakes, I'm going to regret never picking up the Ocarina.

Haha I'm just kiddin'. Nofin's gonna happen except maybe a spike in crime because of the whack-o's.

So I'm just gonna sleep all day or something; nothing new really, and if the world does end, I wanna die in my sleep.

But i'll have spent the last days of my life TAKING TESTS FOR A WEEK but that's just FREAKIN' PEACHY.

Yeah, the only correction I'll make Blender is that the last time everything lined up was back in the 80sday I believe. If I recall what I was told, it was 1984. And at that time there were so many theories then too. But nothing did happen except.... maaaaaaaybe....
A rather high tide. Outside of that... nothing.

On the bright side, if the Mayans were right then this was the last Monday you'll ever have to endure.

Well, first of all, the Mayans weren't a ridiculously ancient society, the only reason they were "primitive" in some fields were because they were a relatively new society, as with the Aztec. Probably a break-off of some sort of main aboriginal body. The thing with the Aztec though, they predicted their demise at the year "1-reed" by a vanquished god of snakes, with fair, white skin. the same year when the conquistadors came across. They marked it on their calendar. Coincidence? Possibly...But the Mayans simply ended their calendar. If this is truly the end of days, they would've done more to show it.
Secondly, The Mayans were great astronomers and Mathematicians, not fortune tellers. their calendar involved their gods and different stars, the paths of planets, the sun and the moon, for crops and things like that. It was an advanced calendar. None of that "they didn't account for leap-year," In fact, leap year was introduced by Caesar as a temporary fix. The Calendar more accurate than today's. It was so accurate, it didn't need it.
Lastly, Archaeologists recently found another few thousand years of the calendar, so I believe there is nothing to worry about.

Don't quote me on this. It's all from memory. probably a few inaccuracies here and there.sorry if I'm wrong

Allow me to clarify on what I intended Kairu.

I was not referring to a planetary alignment. I was referring to the alignment of the Supermassive Black Hole(Shameless Muse reference) at our galaxy's center, the sun, and the earth. This alignment in particular happens every year so it's not a cause for worry.

And Ammy, the three-day blackout thing is a hoax.

One thing my teacher brought up was perhaps this is the end of the world, but not as in an apocalypse. Take 9/11 for instance. In a way, that could've been seen as life ending, except it was just our way of life. Perhaps a new ground-breaking technology will be discovered, or an event will change our way of thinking? Just an idea... but I frankly never bought this stuff from the start.

Take the supposed time of the apocalypse of 12/21/12 12:21:12. This isn't accounting for time zones. Let's assume it doesn't, and we've got ourselves a rolling apocalypse! Two hours later in Ontario, two and a half in Newfoundland! Or however far ahead Newfoundland is of Mountain Time. Will there be large amounts of suicides on this day, people killing themselves before the world 'ends'? I hate to say it... but I would bet on it.

Let me leave you with this...

So I'm back, or at least I will be eventually. Trying to reintegrate myself.
