  • THEORY: Origin of Veran

If you haven't read my theory on the origins of the Gerudo, please do so now. Here's a link to it: http://www.ageofwarroleplaying.net/s...=9563#post9563

Veran, the Sorceress of Shadows, is the main antagonist in the Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages. She possesses Nayru, the Oracle of Ages, and travels back in time to force Labrynnians to complete the construction of Black Tower and use it to rule Labrynna. Since I mentioned my article on the origins of Gerudo and whether they were Twili, this theory will attempt to throw Veran into that mix. As many of you may not know, she is one of my all time favorite villains. So for those of you who do not know who she is or what she looks like, here's a few images:

So there's a few things to point out that I will mention throughout this theory. They are as follows:

    1. Hair Color
    2. Attire
    3. Shoulder Emblems
    4. Robe/Skirt Emblem
    5. Skin Color
    6. Magic

Hair Color: This is fairly easy to notice if you're looking. What little is showing shows that it's red. Ok no big deal there. So this is the first challenge: Is it Gerudo red or Twili red? Let's simply compare official artworks. Below is the art for Veran, Nabooru, and Midna's True Form.

After much scruitiny, I feel that it resembles closer to the Gerudo. So one point to the Gerudo.

Attire: Her uses a scheme of blue, purple, and white. Using the images above of both Nabooru and Midna, we can see that Nabooru uses an elegant scheme of pink and red with some white and blue splashed in. For Midna, we see a majority black robes, with lighter blues and odd symbols. So what about the actual design? Well all three women show their stomachs and general abdomen area. Nabooru wears pants and Midna a slightly provocative skirt tailored more towards an adult entertainer. But let's also take a look at the chest area. Nabooru wears a cloth around her breasts while Midna is a little more covered, keeping much of her chest hidden and even sporting a cloak. Although pink is closer to purple, the heavy use of blue and general outfit pieces, I will give this point to the Twili.

Shoulder Emblems: If you noticed during the Veran image collection, the symbol on either shoulderpad clearly show the Gerudo emblem. Another point to the Gerudo.

Robe/Skirt Emblem: This is where it can be complicated. The symbol looks like an eye. Let's examine both the Gerudo insignia and what I refer to as the Twili insignia.

    Gerudo:

    Twili:

So as we see, neither really emphasizes that eye. But we all know that there is one emblem that does.

Yes, I say that Veran is using the eye from the Sheikah on her robes. Why? I will get into that towards the end. For now, one point Sheikah.

Skin Color: In all of the colored images of Veran, we see she has a blueish skin color. We know the Gerudo do not have blue skin, and in some images, Midna does. Since we see no other Humanoid Twili we can only use Midna as a reference. Since she is often times portrayed with the blue skin, I'll give the point to the Twili.

Magic: Finally, the final decider. For a recap, here's the score: 2 points to both the Twili and Gerudo, 1 point Sheikah. So magic, here's the real tough one. We know both races are capable of using magic. Twinrova is an example of using magic for an offensive attack, specifically to attack Link with fire and ice spells; while Midna used her magic for more of a utility purpose by turning into an arachanid and destroying the magic barrier around Hyrule Castle in Twilight Princess.
So how does Veran use her magic? Well for one, she uses it as an offensive and utility purpose. He most infamous use is to possess people in a spirit form, controlling the possessed to do her bidding. Offensively, Veran transforms into other creatures in an attempt to defeat Link in the final boss fight. So far, we're split on how to decide the final vote. What ultimately makes me decide is one of the forms Veran becomes. In the final boss fight, she transforms into a spider-like creature. This will ultimately make me score for the Twili.

Final Summary: So what do I think she is? I believe Veran is a Twili. She had gotten in league with Twinrova and upon creating an alliance with Twinrova, she used the Gerudo emblem to disguise her true race. But what about that Sheikah eye? I also believe, that like Ganondorf, Veran manipulated her way to the Royal Family and trained being a Sheikah. Even her title, Sorceress of Shadows, alludes to training.

So what do you think about Veran?
