  • (SS Spoiler included) The "Official" Zelda Timeline

Despite all of the controversy and many heated... discussion on many Zelda forums, the true timeline has been the single greatest mystery for all of us Zelda fans. Now the "Official" timeline has been released. The image below was taken for the "Hyrule: Historia" book recently released in Japan for the Zelda 25th anniversary. It was translated by a French fan, GlitterBerri.

In summary, here's the text-only version of the timeline:

    Main Timeline
    1. Skyward Sword
    2. The Minish Cap
    3. Four Swords
    4. Ocarina of Time

Split 1: Link defeats Ganon - childhood branch
    1. Majora's Mask
    2. Twilight Princess
    3. Four Swords Adventures

Split 2: Link defeats Ganon - adult branch
    1. The Wind Waker
    2. Phantom Hourglass
    3. Spirit Tracks

Split 3: Link fails in Ocarina Of Time
    1. A Link to the Past
    2. Oracles of Seasons and Ages
    3. Link's Awakening
    4. The Legend of Zelda
    5. Zelda II

Many fans are not excepting it, not until Miyamoto or Aonuma confirm the timeline. Many fans suspect that with Nintendo being adamantly "hush hush" about the timeline months before and it just "suddenly and magically" is published, is quite suspicious.

In addition to the suspect of it going unconfirmed for so long, others feel that the third split is... too much. They feel that "The Hero of Time is defeated" is a total left field, out of nowhere addition. Personally, I can see why, but that leads to the fact of why isn't Link dying in every game not included either? That would be more accurate to the 'Death string'.

In the image, it also shows many of the wars that have either been touched on, or never included in any of the games. Personally, I would like to see some of the Zelda games include this war. Maybe take on a "Halo Wars" approach and make a strategy game based in the Zelda universe. It would be very fitting for the style Zelda is portrayed. But I suppose the vague details of the war is one of the big attractions to Age of War. We can make it up as we go along.

Whatever the case is, the Zelda community will not let this go any time soon. By the way, did you notice that the timeline is broken up like Ganon's Trident, but only upside-down? Not until now? Well now I just blew your mind.

What are your guy's opinion on this? Do you accept the timeline as canon or do you think that there's something suspicious is going on?

Well I've never been much of a timeline guy, but I read this and I thought I'd just leave this you know, here for you guys to read: Link is Dead.

J, that's some nice reading. And the author, I feel, makes a valid point. If Nintendo wants to canonize Link's death in Ocarina, what does that mean in the other Zelda games? That's why my personal belief is that I won't accept this timeline until someone from Nintendo says "Yes, this is the official timeline and this is how we've based the games on, so far." Speaking of, with this timeline, doesn't that also limit Nintendo to which games they can make? I mean, the timeline shows a definitive end to each branch. So then where would a new game be placed?

And this is why I stayed out of timeline reasoning after my first attempt at a linear timeline. I do question in this timeline Link failing in OoT. Your goal is to beat the game, and you can't do that if Link dies. So how does that work?

Well I can still see why it's there. I mean, yeah, when you think about it. If a real hero dies instead of completing their quest, it basically sets a different chain of events in motion. But I just don't like the fact they legitimize his death in OoT, and not other games. And from what I've read about SS and the timeline, his death would undoubtedly set off a different chain of events. And if that's so, then this whole timeline is crap. I mean, the one legitimized death means they all have to be. Which in turn, makes the whole timeline wrong because of the countless outcomes of the "future"

Ugh, my head hurts just thinking about timeline theory >_< as interesting as I find it all, it confuses the heck out of me. I just wish nentendo would come out and say "yes this is the timeline" that way I wouldn't get confused about it all, because unfourntaly i'm able to see both sides to everything.

This is astounding, and it makes my head hurt. My brother and I are still puzzling out the ramifications.

I kinda like this timeline because it supports the idea of the "unified" continent of Hyrule as I've structured after here on Age of War. So anything that helps Age of War, is ok in my book

I knew Skyward Sword was the first in the timeline.

On your question about where they could add a new game, K, I believe this timeline actually opens a lot of doors for new games. They do end those branches, yes, but who's to say they can't suddenly make the death of another game, for example The Minish Cap, legitimate. Meaning that the Link in Minish Cap failed. This would create a whole other split in the timeline, and with it a whole lot of new games. In theory, they could keep doing this eternally, creating new splits and new games, but that's just theory.
