Why is Tingle what he is today?
Does he have a reason for dressing in tights, why does he do what he does? Tell us what you think about Tingle!

Well there could be different scenarios for Tingle becoming what he is. For example, in Majora's Mask we see that his father is a big, strong, macho man who runs a shop and has his life straightened out. One could think maybe he abused Tingle as a child, which led to childhood trauma. Looking for a way out of that lifestyle, Tingle began fantasizing about being a fairy and thus 30 years later there he was, selling maps to travelers crazy enough to go near him. Or maybe he had always been weird in most people's eyes, which led to his father's embarrassment.
Either way I think we can all agree Tingle's simply a person with a disturbed mind that may or may not realize what people think. Whether he is selling maps in MM or running a slave island and deciphering charts in Wind Waker, he is a character that is clearly part of the entire Zelda experience. After all you can't say the other characters are sane if you don't have someone to compare them with. -
Actually a spinoff game on the DS called Tingle's Rosey Rupeeland did explain a bit about Tingle and why he wears tights.
Basically there is a demonic character that likes to come off as a deity named Uncle Rupee that has a rupee for a head and he constantly craves rupees. Anyone that agrees to serve him is given the green tights and transformed into a Tingle and must collect rupees for Uncle Rupee for the reward of being allowed to enter Rupeeland which is a type of heaven. Tingle was not named in the game before he was renamed Tingle after agreeing to serve Uncle Rupee and given the tights. But the game later shows that there were lots of Tingles doing the same thing and some that had successfully allowed to ewnter Rupeeland. It was said to be a paradise but turned out to be a wasteland where all the Tingles serve Uncle Rupee for all eternity as his slaves.
Tingles are supposed to be different from ordinary Hylians in that they live off of rupees and must constantly feed on them to remain alive. This game introduced a lot of very different characters wearing the familiar tights. Some were animals or even skeletons. So it turns out that Tingle is more of a transformation or curse from a demon of greed. A goal of the game is to help the other Tingles so they can escape and turnd back to normal.
