Ailun settled against a fallen log. A fire slowly burned in front of him. Noticing that the small flank of rabbit meat was beginning to brown on one side, he turned the spit holding it above the fire. He settled back down.
Not long now, then I'll have some real food for a change.
He hadn't found much food in the past few days, and this rabbit was a welcome treat. He took out his knife. It was in good condition. He put it back in its sheath, behind his waist. He took out his staff, and looked it over. The bladed side was also in good condition. He checked the stone and its connections. That didn't need to be done, but he needed something to do. He looked to his tent. It too, was in good condition. He looked back to the rabbit. It was now cooked. Smiling, Ailun took it off the spit and then ate it off the stick, nearly burning his mouth. He settled back again and chewed contently, constantly on alert for intruders.

Suddenly, Ailun stared in a gap through the trees. A large amount of black smoke was rising from what looked like North Horon village. He simply had to know what it was. Sheathing his staff and extinguishing the fire, he ran off in that direction, desperate to find its source.

Ailun walked along the path, passing in and out of the shadows cast by trees. He stopped and kicked aside a few fallen branches, stepping into a small, well-covered clearing. There was enough light to see, but it wouldn't burn you or bother you too much. His stuff was all there, and it looked untouched.
