James tried to remain calm as he turned to answer Ea. "Yes, the Sun is rising, but it'll still be at least an hour. And even if it rises, it'll take a bit longer for it to warm the desert enough for the heat to become dangerous. And yes, the Gerudos may very well be searching for us, but us staying here won't change that. So the way I see it, yes if Elwood's wrong we'll be in trouble, but if we stay here we're in trouble too. So if we're in trouble either way, why not take the chance that Elwood might be right and it might be our ticket out of here? Of course, if you'd rather stay in this cave, as the heat of the day warms us to unbearable temperatures, we run out of food and water, waiting for the Gerudo, which are perfectly capable of surviving in the Sun, to hunt us down, then very well you're welcome to be my guest!" He stared at the girl, daring her to challenge his logic again. He knew he shouldn't get angry, but he was tired enough to not care.

Ea threw up her hands. "Very well, I'd rather die by getting speared by a Gerudo or whatever it is they use now than being cooked alive. So what are we waiting for then? Shouldn't we get on our way quickly to avoid getting warmed up, or whatever you said?"
So I'm back, or at least I will be eventually. Trying to reintegrate myself.

Pleased that Ea had accepted, he nodded. "Yes, we should be on our way," he turned, smiling at Midnight apologetically. "Come on, Gerrard, Luna, we have to stay together lest the Gerudo pick us off one by one."
Suddenly, out of Elwood's tunic a glowing ball of light flew up into the roof. As his eyes adjusted to it, James could see it was Nia, Elwood's fairy. She jingled as she spoke, "I wasn't looking when we were coming back, but I know of ancient tales. Other stories about another land through the mountains beyond the desert. Old stories. I believe if we go, the chances what Elwood saw is precisely that are greater than you think. It took us less than an hour to get back to this cave from where we were resting, so on time, we should be golden." She then fluttered back to sit on Elwood's shoulder, thinking she should start being of more use to the kokiri than just a companion.
James nodded understandingly. "Alright then, let's go guys. And don't worry Midnight, you don't need to carry Elwood this time, so please, just lead the way."

Midnight shook his coat. I could carry him, he grumbled huffingly.
Star nudged his shoulder. You've worked hard enough tonight. Just take us back to that pass, she told him, a teasing note in her voice.
          I still could, he replied.
We're in no hurry. There's no need to exert youself. She started after him as he trotted to the entrance. Both animals paused, sniffing the breeze and flicking their ears. Eventually, they decided it was safe and moved on.

James tightened the grip on his weapons as he began walking after Star and Midnight. He welcomed the change from rough rock to soft sand under his feet as the crunching noise returned. He made sure Elwood stayed right behind him at all times, Nia on his shoulder, as well as the rest of the group. No one was being left behind so far, and he intended to keep it that way. For a while they walked in silence. He could hear the soft jingle of Nia's whispers in Elwood's shoulder, but the boy didn't seem to be responding. Even though he was very tired, James' sight was sharp at all times. Every bit of sand that raised from the ground, every shadow shifting in the distance caught his attention. So far their luck was holding, and he hoped the Gerudo wouldn't change that.

Midnight trotted along, his ears constantly swivelling to catch any new sounds. Star followed close behind him, careful to avoid the sand his paws kicked up. Both were on high alert, keeping watch for any dangers. This doesn't feel right, Midnight growled.
Why, are you going the wrong way? Star asked.
              He snorted. No. Leaving Sephira.
She nudged his side. She'll be fine. And we'll know the instant she's back. The feathers on her arrows will burn away. She made a gesture to the quiver, which was still on her back along with Sephira's pack. It banged against her side annoyingly, but she was somewhat used to it. Whenever Sephira needed to wait in ambush for someone, Star and Midnight took her pack and laid false tracks. It was difficult, but Sephira had taught them rather well. In fact, they would have done it to avoid the Gerudo, if it had just been Sephira they were with. With all these other people, who they didn't know well, it wouldn't have worked.

James kept up his pace matching that of the wolf, when suddenly his pants became warmer. At first he didn't notice it and just kept walking. Then his left leg began throbbing. Still he didn't stop, but he started patting it with his hand, trying to find the source of the heat. His hand also got hotter, and without notice he felt it burn. He jerked it away and came to a stop, waiting for something he hoped didn't happen. Without luck, the pocket of the pants became redder and redder until smoke began pouring from it, the smell of charred clothing reached his nostrils, and finally a flame erupted from the source of the heat. He couldn't think of what could be causing the fire, and in a panic became dancing around wildly, trying to wave away the air. He could feel his thigh warming up even more, and knew it was a matter of seconds before he got seriously burned. He stopped jumping around and began frantically patting at the fire. His hand complained and an "ah!" escaped his mouth. In a normal situation he would have known this to be very foolish of him, but the fire catching him by surprise had removed any logic in his mind. The pain in his leg became more accentuated and aggravating. Nearby, the arrows on Star's back caught on fire as well.
Elwood jumped and Nia jingled in panic when James caught fire. They had been walking close to him and had moved away when he began dancing around. Elwood had no idea what to do, but after a few seconds Nia returned to her senses. She jingled impatiently in his ear then flew low to the ground, in circles around the sand. Elwood understood and knelt to grab the biggest pile of sand he could hold in his hands. Without further ado he rushed to James and slapped the sand as hard as he could against James' stomach, sending both of them to the ground. Although the Kokiri had missed the fire noticeably and only hurt James, his actions led to James realizing what he had to do and rolling on the floor. After a few seconds, the fire was out. It took him a few seconds just laying on the ground to catch his breath. Once he finally calmed down the pain in his hand and left thigh became more urgent. He sat up to inspect the damage. A hole had been burned through his pants and he could see red skin and blood on his leg. He sighed. Now I need first-aid, he thought. Great.

Midnight turned as he smelled burning and spotted the feathers of Sephira's arrows burning away. He grinned at Star. Looks like she's back, he barked happily.
Would seem so, Star purred. Won't be long before she catches up.
The pair both frowned as they smelled burning flesh and turned in time to see Elwood tackle James. Midnight loped over to them, nosing them both to make sure they were alright. He checked Elwood first, then turned to James. He grimaced as he saw the burned patch of skin through the hole in his leg. What happened? he asked, glancing at Star.
This did, she answered, nosing the feather that had just finished reforming on the sand. Sephira gave him one when she shifted. It must have burned and reformed like her other ones. She glanced at Sephira's pack on her back. She always kept herbs for burning in there, considering how often she did by accident. Too bad I can't get this off and get them out.
Midnight nudged her side. Roll on your side. I might be able to help you work it off. She complied and he tried dragging it off her. Unfortunately, his teeth tore it instead. Oops. He nosed through the leaves that fell out of it, along with the other stuff, then pulled aside the tightly wrapped bundle that he knew Sephira used for burning. Gingerly, he picked it up and walked over to James, nudging his uninjured leg gently. Star swept the other leaves, berries, and food into a pile with her tail, trying to hide the small bag of ash among them, then gathered up the bandages and Sephira's spare outfit together and dropped them next to a small box. The lid of the box had come open, revealing a needle-thin knife bound onto the lid and berries sorted into different sections in the bottom, all of which Sephira used for tattoos. Star also made sure that a severed finger, tightly wrapped in a bandage, was hidden among the material. Sephira wouldn't want anyone to know about that little thing yet, although she might not mind James finding out, if he kept it to himself.

James looked at the wolf with wonder. He always felt that it'd be an immense advantage to be able to communicate freely with the wild creatures. For now, however, he'd have to settle for interpreting their actions. He noticed the pack Midnight was carrying and took it from his muzzle, cautiously. He looked at it, analyzing what it could contain, before opening it with ease. Their were herbs inside, some which he vaguely recognized. He looked at the wolf again, inquiring their meaning, but he didn't have to. The smell of burning flesh in his nostrils reminded him of the current situation and he understood. He smiled, gratefully. He couldn't conceive a thought on how Sephira's companions always were on top of things, but he was thankful that they were.
"Thanks, Mid," he whispered so only the wolf and Elwood, who was now next to them, could hear. He scratched behind the wolf's right ear with his left hand before taking some of the herbs and mixing them so that he could correctly apply them to the wound.
Elwood took advantage of the chance and hugged on to Midnight, chatting with him and complementing his smarts. so far, he couldn't think of an animal that might be smarter than him...except maybe Star.
When James was finished he groaned. The herbs had stung a bit, but at least the pain from the burn was starting to fade away, slowly. He'd still have to get someone experienced to check it as soon as possible, but for now the herbs would do. He closed the bundle with what was left of the herbs and looked over at Star, who had Sephira's pack. It had occurred to him that must have been where Midnight had gotten the herbs from. He stood up after he was able to push himself up with his hands, much to his discomfort, and half-limped over to Star. He noticed her trying to hide something among Sephira's things, but decided not to pry. "Thank you," he said, and placed the bundle among Sephira's things. He was going to place it back in the pack, but thought maybe Star would rather he not touch her mistress' things. When he was finally done, he looked at the others apologetically. "Sorry for the interruption, guys, but we should keep going now," he told them. He tried putting weight on the leg, and when he decided he could walk, he did so. Elwood looked up at him, and slowly began following him once again.

Once James seemed alright, Star and Midnight forced the stuff back into the pack, some in the quiver so it wouldn't fall out again. Then they followed James, careful to pick up anything that still fell out and replace it.

                      A few hours later-

*Sephira and co come from Rebirth of the Phoenix*

As the horses continued following the trail, Sephira noticed a small group in the distance and recognized them as her friends. Grinning with delight, she pointed them out to the others. "There they are!" Then she threw her head back and let out a long wolf howl, startling the horses.
Zarola flattened her ears. "What are you doing?" she growled with annoyance.
"Calling my partners," the Stari answered, pointing to Midnight as the black wolf loped towards them. Star remained with the others, trying to reassure them that the approaching riders were friendly. Sephira vaulted off Ash and threw her arms around Midnight as she launched himself into her arms.
"Are you alright?" he asked, licking her face.
"Perfectly," she answered, laughing as she scratched his ears. "Are you and Star? James and Elwood?"
"Your feather burned James, but we gave some of your herbs. Everyone else is fine." He drew back. "Rose?"
                      "I know," she answered softly.

As the two seemed to quiet, Kaida asked, "So what's with the dog?" It looked like a wolf, but it clearly wasn't a wild one.

"Wolf," Sephira corrected. "This is Midnight. He's one of my animal partners." She stood. "Let's join the others." She led the group on foot until they reached James and the others. She hugged Star, who purred loudly in her grip, before throwing herself on James.

Donovan smiled when Kaida talked of teaching him about her job. It felt like they would spend the future working together, going on adventures, which he didn't mind one bit. Then he heard Sephira call out about her friends, followed by a long howl. Usually people seem less strange as I get to know them, Donovan thought. But Sephira's case is the opposite. He looked at the unfamiliar group ahead. They would be interesting, but Donovan really wanted to just break off from everyone and go back to Termina with only Kaida. He looked down at the wolf the others were talking about. He remembered Lyxa calling him a wolf sometimes, but he wasn't sure why.

Inga smiled as Sephira greeted the wolf and then the rest of her friends. They seemed to be a really tight pack, and they looked pretty happy as well. But something about meeting a group larger than her own trio made her feel a bit uneasy. She was sure that they weren't any threat, but they still felt strange. "Hey guys!" Inga greeted with invisibly fake enthusiasm. She always tried making strangers feel comfortable around her before she was comfortable with them.

Ea looked at the approaching group. She was hardly in the mood to deal with more people. She questioned why she had even come with them anyways. It had probably been to distance herself from her past. She wondered what her mother was going to think about this... Ea just up and leaving. She could probably make it on her own, but...

No. There was no time for reminiscing. No time for thinking about what she had left behind. She hated her past. She hated her father, even if he was dead. There was just too much negativity surrounding Hyrule for her. She hoped this little group and their venture to gods know where would spell a new future for her. Hopefully it would. Hopefully she'd forget about all that. There was a lot of hope involved... she had never really been one to hope. But no matter. Hopefully nobody had noticed her little thought process. She hated feelings as a whole, buried them so deep even she forgot about them. She spoke to James with the same, general, blank face she always did. "You know who these people are?"
So I'm back, or at least I will be eventually. Trying to reintegrate myself.

At first James was startled. He followed Midnight with his eyes to see what all he's excitement was about and saw that he was leaping straight to a small group of people in the distance. Immediately he knew what was probably attracting Midnight so much. Sephira. He looked at Star to reassure himself then waited for the newcomers to join them. He grinned as the girl came into full view and hugged Star, only slightly wondering about her attire. His mind was too distracted by his gladness that she had found them, and that she was alright. He hugged her back affectionately, not wanting to let go, before regretfully pulling back a little to answer Ea. "Well, of course I know her, it's Sephira!" he said, the warmth in his voice noticeable. "As for the others," he looked curiously then turned back to Sephira and raised an eyebrow, "I think introductions are in order... as well as an explanation! What happened? I'm glad you're alive... are you hurt?" The last two questions came out more as a personal comment directed at his girlfriend, but they were still loud enough for the others to hear. Unconsciously his hand went to his own burnt thigh when he mentioned her being OK.
Elwood was surprised they had been joined by even more people. He had been scared for a moment, but when he realized Sephira was with them his fear faded away. Slowly his attention to the conversation diminished and turned to the new animal in the group. It looked nothing like he had ever seen before, and he could sense a hatred being emitted from her. He wondered what it could possibly be.

Sephira laughed, her eyes twinkling. "Want to take a guess, James?" she teased. "I ran into these people here." Quieter, she added, "I'll explain later; I don't want the others to know about my ability. Oh, and Elliot said to tell you thanks, and that you'd make a great poet." She tilted her head, requesting an explanation for the message, but understanding that it was his choice to tell her. She hoped he would, since she would be telling him how she knew Elliot had said that, among other things. Her gaze drifted to her pendent, still around James' neck, before she caught his gesture to his leg. "Love of Nayru! Are you alright?" She knelt next to him and started examining the burn, her experienced eyes inspecting the poultice. "You shouldn't be walking on this," she accused. "Especially without properly bandaging it. If sand gets in there, it'll get infected." She took her pack from Star, frowning at the hole in it before pulling out various other herbs and some bandages. Then she set to work treating the burn, muttering under her breath about the dangers of her fire and how she should have known better than to give James her feather, among other, similar things.

As Sephira worked on James' leg, Star approached the panther. The creature made her curious, as it resembled a larger, black version of herself, yet the scars across its body testified to a different life than her own, as did the vicious gleam in its gold eyes. [i]"Who are you?" she asked kindly.
Zarola sniffed. "A huntress taken from her territory. A slave to those with no respect for my abilities. A black panther who could tear you to ribbons should I desire."
"No need to be hostile," Midnight growled, moving to stand protectively by Elwood. "She only wants to make you feel welcome."
"Nothing can do that. I am a captive, awaiting the day I can be free again."
Star huffed. "I hope we don't have to deal with her for long," she muttered to Midnight.
"Doubtful, knowing Sephira," he murmured in reply, then said, "I'm Midnight, this is FallenStar. We are partners to Sephira, who has treated us kindly these past years."
"Lucky you," Zarola replied, her voice low and sarcastic. She flopped down in the shadow cast by a horse, panting with the heat from the sun.

Kaida eyed James and Sephira with mild curiosity. They seemed close, but unless she was mistaken, Sephira seemed hesitant around the young man. She was clearly trying to hide it, and doing an exceptional job, but it was still there. Kaida wondered if something had happened between them before, or something had happened to the Stari at some point in her past.
"They don't know us," she said in response to a different woman's question, briefly wondering if maybe James had a fling with her before, which would explain Sephira's reaction. "I'm Kaida 'Dragon' Songsword of Clock Town. This is Donovan Artemis and Inga Kachal." She gestured to her two companions as she spoke, then pointed to her panther and said, "And that's Zarola." She settled back in the saddle, waiting for their names in return.

The comment about Elliot came as a complete surprise to James. It took him a second to understand, and when he did he unintentionally blushed. However the shock subsided into curiousness. How could Sephira know what Elliot had said? Could it be possible that he was... no. James knew better than to hope for that. He had personally seen to it that his body was properly cremated so that his spirit could rest. So then, how could have Sephira talked to their friend? Slowly, the burn ached and pieces of the story began clicking together. Sephira must have left their world, albeit temporarily. He nodded at her response, understanding that something deeper must have played a part in the events of the day before. He could tell that the girl was waiting, maybe for him to tell her about what Elliot was talking about. He wasn't sure exactly how to say it, but luckily (or maybe not so much) she realized that he was injured. He cursed himself for making it so obvious.
"Don't worry about it, it's nothing really. Just a small burn," he urged as the girl began examining it. As much as he was glad that a proper healer was getting a look at it, he couldn't help but feel embarrassed about the way she was going about it. He cringed when the girl accused him of walking on the leg. "I'm telling you, it's really nothing... I'm sorry," he said in a lower tone. He knew it had been foolhardy to keep going injured, but his main mission at the time had been to get the others out of danger, and make haste about it. To distract himself from his girlfriend's disapproval, he turned to the newcomers to acknowledge their names. "Pleased to meet you. I am Jameson Borgon, and these are Gerrard Long, Luna, and Ea. I don't believe I know your last name, actually," he added in the direction of Ea. "Oh and that's Elwood, and Sephira's animal partners FallenStar and Midnight, although you might have already known that."
Elwood nodded in the direction of the newcomers when he heard his name being mentioned, and then returned his attention to the new animal, clearly intrigued. Zarola...
