  • A Long Walk

Madison walked casually across Hyrule Field from Kakariko. She was heading towards the forest, where she could further her research, improve her magic, and, hopefully, help anyone in need there. All of her few belongings were packed in a small black leather backpack that she had slung over one shoulder, with the exception of an emerald the size of her fist, which she now tossed up and caught repeatedly as she walked.

Her parents had sent her the emerald as a gift with their latest letter, which had reached her in Kakariko. In the letter, they had explained that the stone could be used to amplify her forest magic if made into a staff, which she knew just how to do.

Walking to a tree that she thought would be perfect-a beautiful white-wooded birch tree-Madison set to work. There was a low branch that was perfect. Closing her hand around the branch, Madison placed the stone at the end, where it forked with very thin twigs. After awhile of preparing herself by honing in on the flow of the tree's energy, she began, slowly, to redirect the flow into the end twigs. As she felt her energy leave her body and flow towards the small branches, they started to bend around the stone.

Once the stone was held very securely in place, she broke off the branch at a good length for her staff. After smoothing out the end that had been attached to the tree, she was finally finished. Tired from the effort, Madison sat down and leaned against the tree, propping her new staff up next to her.

Thirsty from traveling all afternoon, Raiden approached a stream. He knelt down at the water's edge and began scooping the cool, clear water into his mouth. After his thirst was satisfied, he looked across the stream to take in the natural beauty of his surroundings. He noticed a girl leaning against a large tree in the distance.

As he strained to see this girl, his curiosity grew. He wanted to know more about her. Raiden stood, trying to gather in all that he could about her.

Out of the corner of her eye, Madison saw a man stand up on the opposite bank of the nearby stream. Finally recovered from making her staff, Madison stood up and smiled at the man from a distance. Grabbing her staff and backpack, she walked to the stream and crossed, using a nearby fallen log.

Madison approached the tall man with a friendly smile on her face. "Hello. I'm Madison. What are you doing out here?" she asked out of curiosity. Because Hyrule Field was such a big place, she didn't often run into people as she traveled.

Raiden was hesitant to answer, given his shyness. He said with a soft voice "Hi, I'm Raiden. I was just stopping by this stream to quench my thirst before continuing on. You see, I'm a drifter. I don't really have a place I call home. I left my house at age 16 and have been traveling ever since."

Even though she didn't know Raiden, Madison felt sympathy for him. He had a sort of sadness in his voice when he said that he didn't have a home. Even though Madison was a sort of drifter also, she at least knew she could return to her parents in Castle Town, so she would always have a home. "Well, I'm kind of a drifter now too. I'm heading towards the forest," Madison said.

Madison kind of hoped he would be going that way as well. It would be dark soon, and some not-so-friendly things came out at night. Though she wouldn't want the creatures hurt, Madison knew they would be much less likely to target her if she had a companion, especially one this large and who had a longsword slung across his back. Besides, he seemed friendly enough. Maybe she could end up making a new friend.

Raiden looked at her shyly and said "I'm heading that way too. I planned on making a camp when I found the next water hole. Would you mind if I joined you?"

Madison's eyes sparkled with happiness. She felt relieved that she wouldn't have to be alone anymore, at least for the time being. "I wouldn't mind at all. Actually, I'd love the company." Madison hoped Raiden wouldn't think she was strange for being so outgoing... He seemed so shy, so this probably wasn't behavior he was used to. "I've been out this way before, so I know there's a small pond just about a twenty minute walk from here that would be a perfect spot for a campsite." Madison walked off in the direction of the pond, happy to finally have someone to talk to.

Raiden followed her to the pond. Once there, he immediately began setting up camp. He gathered many logs of fallen trees, leaves, and pine needles to make a fire. After strategically organizing them into a pile, he pulled a flint out and lit it. His face formed a large smile as he felt his body tingle from the heat.

He looked around and decided that it was a nice night and that he would have no reason to build a shelter. On nights like this he would typically just spread a cloth over the ground and lay by the fire for the night. He briefly day-dreamed about him and Madison laying down and staring up at the big stars in the sky. He was instantly brought back by a popping sound coming from the fire.

In the blaze of the fire, Madison finally got to make out the details of his face. She thought he was handsome, but of course she wouldn't tell him that. Something like that would be way too forward, even for her, when they had just met.

While Raiden had been stacking the logs, Madison had noticed a long scar on his forearm. Her curiosity as well as her desire to start a conversation with Raiden. "Hey, how did you get that scar? Looks like it must have hurt..." In the back of her mind, she wondered if he had gotten proper medical attention. He didn't have a home, so Madison doubted he did. She found herself wishing she could have been there to heal him.

He thought quickly and replied "Oh, it's nothing. It's a really long story. Besides, it looks a lot worse than it really was." Raiden thought for a moment and then said "What types of things are you interested in?"

By the way Raiden answered quickly and then very rapidly changed the subject, Madison knew there was more to his scar than what he was letting on, but she wouldn't bother him about it anymore, for now at least. "Well, I'm actually a healer. I have the gift of forest magic, and I have been using it to create potions. I want to help people," she said, smiling. "I also really love animals and just nature in general," Madison added. "So how about you? What kinds of things do you like?" she asked, genuinely interested. His shyness gave him a mysterious quality that made Madison want to get to know him.

Raiden replied "I am a warrior. My father is a blacksmith and he taught me how to forge weapons. He also taught me the art of swordplay. I enjoy learning and conversing with people, especially about history."

"I enjoy history as well," Madison said, smiling. She put her backpack and staff on the ground, a safe distance from the fire. She unpacked a blanket, which she spread out on the ground near the fire so she could feel its warmth through the night. Madison spread out on her back and looked up at the stars for a moment.

She glanced over at Raiden, hoping he wouldn't notice her looking. Yeah, he's definitely attractive she thought as she saw him illuminated by the firelight. Even though Madison didn't like the idea of violence, she had a feeling he would look pretty good wielding a sword. Maybe I just like bad boys... she thought to herself, stifling a giggle.

Raiden set down his belongings on the other side of the fire and set out his own blanket to lay on. He put his blanket directly across the fire from Madison. He watched the fire its flames shot up and split into the dark night. Fire always amazed Raiden along with many other simple things such as the flow of water and the stars in the sky. He enjoyed pondering about all of these concepts and trying to figure out how they work.

Madison couldn't help but feel a little discouraged that Raiden had seemed to have tried to get as far away from her as possible. Every once in awhile, she could see his face through the flames. He seemed deep in thought. She wanted so badly to get to know him more, but she was too tired to keep trying tonight. Closing her eyes, sleep overtook her quickly.
