  • The Baron Strikes Back

It was the middle of the night, Adriel just came down from the astronomy tower after observing the stars for the night. He's been keeping a record of the stars and it's changing locations throughout the year. This is his eighth year of observing, and yet, he's still so fascinated. After pulling his head out of the sky, he went down to the courtyard to pace and let his mind wind down before bed.

Malina spotted her father in the courtyard and went to join him. She had been having a restless night so had gone to the stables. Being with the horses always relaxed her.
She smiled at Adriel. "Watching the stars again, Dad? Did they reveal any new secrets to you?" She had heard that the stars could tell someone their future. While she thought this was old wives' tales, she still asked with that thought in mind.

"Ah, Malina, what are you doing up so late?" Adriel asked pecking his daughter's cheek. "I've noticed that the stars are always in the same spot this time, every year. I've just been wondering about them. As for any secrets, don't you know that's just a myth. I've been doing this since you were a girl. Not once have I been told a secret."

Malina smiled happily as Adriel pecked her cheek. No matter how old she got, she would always be her daddy's girl. "I had a hard time sleeping, so I came down to be with the horses. Zylan was a little annoyed at being woken, but he cheered up when I gave him a carrot." She chuckled. "And yes, Dad, I know it's a myth. But a girl can dream, can't she? After all, if you manage to see who my husband will be, that will save me the trouble of looking, now won't it."

Adriel chuckled at his daughter's remark about a husband. "There's no need rushing it. I don't plan on dying anytime soon. What's been on your mind to keep you up?"

Malina gave him a half-smile. "That's just it, Dad. I keep having nightmares of a battle. Or a war, in which you lead one side. And every time, I see you dieing, then me having to surrender from grief." She shuddered, then stepped closer, hoping he'd wrap her in his arms and tell her they were nothing, like when she was a girl.

"Malina..." he said holding her, "You know this war is inevitable. I have to be out there leading the men. It's the only way I can ensure that we win. Don't you worry you little butt, no one is going to kill me in battle. I promise I'll live to see when I'm 60," he said flashing her a smile. "And..." he said with hesitation, "Should something happen to me, I've been training you to take over. I trust you wouldn't surrender to them. Just remember, when I pass on, I'll turn into one of the stars and no matter where you are, I will be watching you. Being a guide for you. I'll forever be there to shine in your heart."

Malina smiled faintly. "Maybe I don't want you watching me all the time," she teased. "Especially when I have a man over. You'll tell me how I'm doing it wrong, and that just won't do."

Adriel roared with laughter, "Now, now, now. You know it's because I care. But however, I think if you were wanting privacy for a potential prince, I would give you that privacy."

Malina chuckled as well. It was hard not to when Adriel laughed so hard. "I'd appreciate it. I can just imagine the situation otherwise. Move your leg there! Keep your chin up! Don't do that unless you want kids early! Heehee!"

"I think that's enough talking," he said smiling. "It's pretty late. You should try to sleep again." He pecked Malina again on the cheek. "Now scoot."

Malina smiled. "Alright, Dad." She pecked his cheek, then walked inside and up to her room. She changed into a slender night grown, then crawled into bed. Laying on her back, she looked out the window above her head and watched the stars until sleep made them heavy.

Adriel remained in the courtyard. He looked up at the moon which was illuminating the entire courtyard. He sighed for a moment. "I wish the stars did tell secrets. Maybe they'd tell me who will win this war..." After looking at the moon for a couple minutes, a scout for the Labrynna Regime had ran up to him.
"Sir! The Hyrulians.... They're massing forces in Ordona. I'll bet they're establishing a base to get their supply line back. I looks like the whole Hyrulian Army is there. What are we going to do?" the Scout concluded.
"Recall our forces. Have them establish a command center just beyond Rolling Ridge. I'll be there in one day's time."
"Yes Sir, I'll go inform them immediately," the Scout said faithfully before running back.
"Oh Malina, please forgive me.... It seems I'm needed for the war." Adriel walked inside and up to his chambers. He disrobed and changed into his casualwear and climbed into bed next to Malina's mom, his wife. He wrapped his arms around her as she slept and he was asleep until morning.

                            The Next Morning

Gavan strode out of the training field and towards the dining hall. He liked to start the morning with a little training, then meet with Malina for breakfast. After that was usually up to her. And that usually involved a mad horse race outside the palace, followed by a mock battle. Gavan usually won, but her allowed her Malina to win often enough to keep fer from getting angry.
Gavan walked past the stables and noticed that horses were being saddled. He walked in and asked the man in charge what was going on. The Baron's riding to battle, sir. He instructed us to make ready for him to leave.
Gavan nodded his thanks and left. He tried to keep himself from hurrying as he went to confront the Baron. He knew Malina would die inside if she knew her father was leaving without saying anything.
The wolf howls his mournful song,
My heart beats as I listen to him.
It rises and falls as he speaks to the moon,
A chilling howl that fills me with joy.

The future isn't set in stone. Even if it was, stones can been broken.

Adriel was in the throne room. Before him were two Legates (same ranks as General) arguing.
"Sir, this is clearly an act of war by Hyrule. They clearly want to conquer us with an army of that size," one Legate argued.
"I disagree, Baron. We've managed to accidentally cut off one of their key supply routes in our war. They're retaliating to keep their lands in check. I insist that we approach with peace," the other Legate pleaded.
"Baron, if we move now, we can redirect some of our forces North to through the desert. We can hug the cliffs and avoid the Gerudo and attack the Castle while Hyrule is vulnerable."
"Both of you, enough. Legate Lanius, You are to go north, with two of your best men, to scout out and probe Hyrule Castle's defenses. Nothing more. Legate Graham, I agree with you that Hyrule is acting in self-defense, but I know them well enough that they will kill anyone on site before asking questions. I'm going to force our way through Hyrule's forces and into Holodrum. Any questions?"
