  • Narus's camp

Narus sat near a fire, with Felgrand's head on his lap while a medical Stari treated his injuries.
    “How is he?” Narus asked
“He'll be fine, sir. A few days and he'll be fully healed.” the Stari replied.
Narus eased the sleeping cat off of his leg before standing up to look around at the dozen and a half Stari who recognized him as their true leader.
“We are few in number,” he said to them. “But we can take on Rhykim and his puppets without difficulty. We Stari fight best on our own, with none but our cheetahs and the shadows that we strike from.”
“But chief, why do we want to attack Rhykim?” a Stari interrupted him.
Narus smiled confidently “I have two reason, actually. The first is that he has deluded our brothers and sisters into believing that he is their leader. He has taken them from the forest and is poisoning their minds, leading them astray from our ancient traditions. We need to bring them back to the Stari way, and destroy those who refuse.”
The others nodded. They too had despised following a man not of the forest who used them as mere pawns. The Stari had incredible power, capable of ruling the country if they wanted.
A women who had been toying with the fire looked at her chief. “And the other reason?”
Narus's expression darkened. “He humiliated me. He made me look weak. I live in the shadows, but I will not live in one cast by a man so much less than I am.” Narus turned away. “Now, then. I want two Stari and their partners to keep watch. We shall rest tonight, then move out at sunrise.”

Tara was surprised to see there were more people with Narus than she had originally thought. It was still a paltry amount when compared to how many still followed Rhykim, but to have so many following him was still impressive. And from what she had learned of the Stari, their abilities and their cheetahs made them count for more than they really were. Very few lesser beings could match a Stari in one-on-one combat, and she doubted Rhykim would be one of them. Still, Rhykim was guarded closely by powerful people. Amaya was among the strongest of the Stari that Tara had seen so far, Nyx the only one stronger. If Narus hoped to be able to beat them, he'd need all the help he could get.

    "Hey! You up there!"

Tara started and turned to see a Stari approaching her. She had been laying flat on her belly, looking at Narus' camp from over a rise, and confident she would be difficult to see in the night. Then she saw the cheetah growling next to its master and realized how she had been spotted.

She wasn't given a chance to fight or argue, but was grabbed, bound, and brought before Narus.

Narus was sitting a few meters from the fire, carefully carving out a knife handle from hardwood, when a Stari called out to him. "Lord Narus! I have found a spy!"
Narus barely glanced over. "Bring her over here," he said, blowing the dust off his project.
The Stari obeyed, dragging the girl around to face his chief, who resumed scratching at the wood.
"Tell me, girl, why you are here," he said without really caring.

Tara knew better than to struggle. She had spent enough time with Rhykim's twin generals to know that Stari were powerful, and weren't easy to escape from. Even the weakest one physically could keep a stronger person captive with their magical abilities. This Lord Narus person, though. She had only seen him from a distance before, and while he had looked dangerous, he looked fairly intimidating up close, his dark blue eyes focused on the wood he was carving. She had seen Rhykim in person, a foreboding figure whose female right and left hands only increased his obvious confidence. However, Narus seemed more lax, as if everything was beneath his notice. Rhykim liked to keep his finger on the pulse, so to speak, but Narus seemed to think there was no point to even bother looking up. His question sounded disinterested, as if he didn't really care who she was, as long as she wasn't a threat. Why else would he call her a girl when he didn't seem that much older than Amaya or Nyx, who were but a few years older than she?
"I want your help to revive my race," she said aloud. "I saw you break the alliance with Rhykim. I know you don't like him. I can help you defeat him."

Narus stopped his project and stood, looking at the girl, an amused look on his face.
"A Gerudo, eh? I suppose you do look something like them," he said cooly as he started circling her slowly. "Though there's something else about you. More to the point, why would you ask me for help? I could very easily kill you, and I am sure you know that." He stopped in front of her and looked deep into her light golden eyes. "Yet you show little fear. Tell me, girl, what is your name?"

Something else about her? What did that mean? Was he able to tell she was half Stari? Of course, that was only if that was true. She still couldn't grasp the idea that her mother hadn't been insane when she talked about the forest people, although Nyx's explanation did explain some things. "I met Nyx and Amaya. I learned what the Stari are capable of. What your seeing isn't the lack of fear, it's the acknowledgement of my inferiority. If you want to do something to me, I wouldn't be able to stop you. So, I'm resigned to do whatever I have to so my people can be revived." She did wriggle her wrists some in protest against the tight cords. "I know that you broke it off with Rhykim. There's bad blood between you already. I want him taken down. We're after the same thing, really. Only I don't care how he falls, just that he and his girl Amaya die and my people are free to continue their lives in peace." She was unaware that the Gerudo were held as slaves by Rhykim's forces, she believed that they were only hiding somewhere they couldn't be found.

Narus regarded the woman standing before him. She certainly had heart, but she also seemed a little desperate, which could be her, and his, if he took her in, undoing. Though if she truly did want Rhykim's downfall, that could prove helpful.
After nearly a minute of silent contemplation, he noticed that she had been looking at him expectantly. Reaching a conclusion, he drew his katana and rested the tip lightly in the middle of her chest. "Very well. I will let you come with us." Narus slashed the ropes holding the girl's wrists, setting her free. "Though I must warn you, Rhykim has either killed or enslaved most of your people. He does not like to take chances. And on that note, he will come for us, and if you can not keep up, you will be left behind."
Narus sheathed his blade and sat back down, motioning her to join him. We are going to war, and I can not afford to have any weak links." Narus's expression softened somewhat. Now tell me, what's your name?"

you realize he's asked that like three time already, right?

Tara breathed a quiet sigh of relief as the remains of her bonds fell off. When he had pointed that blade at her, she'd been afraid he might run her through. His warning made sense, she would have said the same had the roles been reversed. However, she had not been expecting him to reveal the situation of her people. She had been hoping the Gerudo had simply gone into hiding, found a secret cave in the Southmarble Cliffs to wait and recover from the attack. But slavery? She wouldn't have thought Rhykim would put her people in chains and force them to clean up after his men. That was a cruel punishment for her proud people.

"Tara, Lord Narus," she answered. She settled into a more relaxed position than the kneeling one she had been forced into. "I am a skilled archer, although from what I've seen, not as skilled as the Stari except on horseback. I am also a master of poisons." The claws of her hand rose clacked together as she closed her hand around her knife hilt. She drew it and reversed her grip to extend it hiltfirst to Narus. "I offer those skills to you."

Narus smiled and placed his hand on her knife. "I accept, Tara," he said, then lifted her hand to inspect the gadget on it.

"An interesting device. Perhaps, if combined with strands of metal..." He looked turned his gaze back to her. "Eat, and get some rest. We will be breaking camp at first light," He said, dismissing her and motioning for another of the Stari to provide her with food and a sleeping place. He watched her leave, before pulling his own knife handle out and continued working on it.

Felgrand looked up from where he had been lying "If I didn't know better, I would say you rather liked her," He said slyly. Narus simply chuckled in response.

Tara smiled shyly as she noticed Narus' interest in her hand rose. She quickly withdrew it and pressed it to her side, giving a small bow of her head as he dismissed her. Another Stari stepped forward and helped her get settled for the night. She was surprised to discover that the Stari slept straight on the ground, with no cots, pallets, or anything. In fact, the only indication that they would have been there was the fire Narus sat before, as well as their tracks, of course. The Stari left no litter, no scraps of food or similar to be left as trail. It would be easy enough to disguise their tracks, so the only evidence of their being here would be the remains of the fire, and with its small size, it could easily be mistaken for a lone person's camp.
As she ate the meal given her, Tara played a bit with her hand rose, clacking the claws together and using their sharp tips to spear her food. What was Narus' interest in it? There seemed to be more than just the usual mild interest she got when someone saw her invention for the first time. Most thought it was just an unusual adornment, which it was, if you didn't recognize the claws as sharp and dangerous. Maybe Narus had recognized it, and wondered how she had made it. Deciding that must be it, she pillowed her head on her arm as she lay down on her side and attempted to find sleep.

Narus opened his eyes to see the first rays of the sun looking over the horizon. Time to get up, he thought, rising quickly. He looked around the camp, seeing the other Stari also rising, and nodded in approval. Then his eyes alighted on Tara, who still slept soundly.
She is quite a find, he thought, allowing a small smile to ghost on his lips for a brief moment before walking over to the Gerudo and gently shook her awake.
“Hey. Get up, we need to leave.” Narus turned away to pull his equipment on, before turning back to Tara, who was starting to rise, yawning as she did so.
Come on, hurry up,” Narus stated, starting to get slightly irritable. He had hoped to be on the road by now. “We’ll eat as we walk.”

Tara scowled at the Stari leader's impatience. It was early, so early that most sane people would still be asleep. Why did he have to get moving now? They could sleep for a good while more and still get plenty of travelling done. Where were they even going anyways? They couldn't be thinking of attacking Logata City, it was too heavily fortified for his small group. She grumbled and pulled her pack back on her shoulders before joining the rest the group.

Narus went around the camp, supervising the packing, waking those who weren't up yet, and grabbing a few plants that happened to be nearby.
“Come on, people!” He yelled at the camp. “You can eat on the road. We need to get to Bybourne Forest as soon as possible.”
The chief glanced back at Tara. With a twinge of annoyance, he say that she was still getting out of her makeshift bed. Sighing, he went over to help her.
“Come on, let us get going,” Narus said. Producing a travel pack, he bent over and packed some of her things, taking the opportunity to steal another glance at the device on her hand. Finished packing, Narus stood, and, giving her a small meal of a some fruits, walked off to finish to lead the small group to the Forest.
