Twigs, branches, and small logs that had been on the ground were now crackling. The flames went high up into the air, strong and menacing. But comforting. They were a wall between him and her. The archer of the forest, the twin without a pair. She'd come down from her high seat of royalty on her stallion just to face him, and honor. Only him, and her. The wall of fire was unyielding, a curtain between their eyes. A shield to keep them from the fight. But she was there, and so was he. He could tell she was disappointed. She could tell he was in disbelief. His grasp on the soft string of a weapon he was carrying tensed, but he didn't aim at her. Why would he ever aim at her after what they'd been through? She could fire a lightning bolt straight at him, through the flames, but was there no other choice? The small drizzle was growing, feeding its intensity with itself. And now there was electricity up in the sky. Her best friend. His dirty blonde hair was darkened by the water, but luckily it was short enough that it didn't damage his eyesight. Hers was always in that ponytail, sleek and black, even through a storm. The silence didn't survive the tension. Like every war eventually causes, it broke it.

"Everything you said, Swiftongue, you lived up to your name. I only wish I'd caught your lies sooner rather than later." Ranger's hand unclenched, hurt by the attack.
"Do not accuse me falsely, Nyx Celeste, it would not be in your best interest to dwell on figments of your imagination before your entire army."
"Falsely? You deceived me and led me on, made me believe that maybe... Maybe there was someone else who I mattered to. But I know I was wrong."
"I've lied through thick and thin, Nyx, to my father, to my allies, to my leaders. I've lied to myself. But I never lied to one person, in one mountain, that one day. I never lied to you." He stepped closer to the burning truth, feeling the heat warm his face despite the water falling from the sky. It was true. He told her things that he never would have admitted to with anyone else.
"I offered you a way out of the forest, Ranger. I offered you safety, and a place next to the throne of Logata. But you chose to turn on us and spit at our feet instead. You cheated our trust and everything we fought for together." She remembered. She saw herself waiting in the mountains, blushing at his innocent compliments, smiling gleefully at their time together, at their soft kissing. She remembered and so did her heart.

He didn't answer at first. After all, what she said was fact. But he had always known. Rhykim was never one of his options, he was simply the road to get to one of them. It would have never worked out, he knew.
"You told me, Nyx, that Rhykim is the only one that respected you for who you were. That he treated you and Amaya nicely when no one else did. But you lie as well. Because he isn't the only one. I opened up to you Nyx. He isn't the only one, not anymore. We are your people, Nyx, your brothers and sisters just as much as Amaya. And together we would bring peace to our people. There needs be no more death or warfare. Order them to put down their arms. Join us, as I wanted to join with you back then. You offered a way out of the forest back then, Nyx, but things have changed. I now offer you a life of love and reward. A life with me." A tear welled up in her eyes, but the rain masked it like she masked her feelings. He could not see it, but she looked away in pain and put her hand over he heart.
"There is no way out now, Ranger. Not after what you did. The Stari turned their back on me, and I in turn would turn on them, in the end. There is no more us, there is a him, and there is a her, and it will never be anything more." Ranger closed his eyes.
"This isn't the first time you consider abandoning Rhykim's ranks, Nyx, but I can assure it would be the last." She was silent. It didn't feel like she was even there. "It would have been."

His bow was tight again, and so were her fists. The rain was strong enough that some of the flames were dowsed, but they always came crawling back into the sky. He caught glimpses of her pale complexion, his determined jaw.
"You said I was one of the best fighters in the tribe."
"And you said I was the best archer of all."
"I guess now is the time when we see."
"When we see who is truly to overcome. The twin."
    "Or the archer."
More rain, the wall between them came crashing down. His bow met her emerald gaze. And the arrow flew swift and steady. And lightning struck, but not from the sky.

Narus had found himself a rather comfortable tree stump and now sat on it, his finger interlaced on the hilt of his katana, which was embedded in the ground. He watched Nyx and Ranger talk, a cruel and sardonic grin on his face.
Are they going to fight or make up? He mused to himself. He glanced up at the sky again, rather surprised nobody had noticed what he had been up to. For the past few minutes, he had been focusing all the lightning in the cloud into one spot. Chuckling to himself, he turned his attention back to the combatants.

        [Background Music - Highly Recommended]

The arrow was ripped to pieces, marking the beginning of the end. Dara watched from the sidelines, not wanting to get involved. Nyx's cheetah wasn't there to see.
The energy scorched the place where Ranger had been standing, but he had jumped out of the way in time. Unclasping his belt, he let the coat he was wearing fall to the floor. He was ready to fight. The fire had withered enough in front of them for them to be able to walk to each other. They circled around one another, in silence. Twiddling the hunting knife he carried in his hand, his breath was slow and steady. But his heart was beating fast. She watched intently, without blinking. In a swift movement he reached for his arrows and cast one with all his strength at her. She twirled out of the way and extended her left arm, a bolt of lightning shooting at him. He jumped forward and crouched, the electricity flying over him. Still crouching he rushed towards her and swung the knife widely to the right. She had raised a sword to meet his within a second. They clashed and thunder boomed above. Pushing against each other, neither gave in so they both jumped back to free the weapons. She then swung overhead, prompting him to jump to the right and counter with a kick at her shin. She yelled in anger at the pain and twirled back, kicking him across the stomach. He was thrown and barely had time to recover before a bolt of energy struck just between his legs. Frowning he rolled backwards on his head back to a standing position.
She was smiling mischievously, twirling her sword. He stretched his neck, and did the same with his arms behind his head, then returned to a defensive position. With one hand she was letting sparks fly, with the other the sword looked fairly dangerous. Taking his chances with the electricity, he pulled out his bow and shot an arrow straight for her chest. He used his mind to push it even faster, but she was still able to swing her sword just at the right time to block it. But it didn't matter. He had used the distraction to run straight for her, jumped, and with his right fist clenched tight aimed straight for her cheek. She fell backwards, a cracking noise evident. But she moved her leg and swept his from under him. Crashing hard on the ground he watched as she pushed herself up on her arms, rolled over to him and tried to stab him across the chest with her sword while he was laying there. He blocked with the knife and she used her elbow on his ribs. He gasped for breath as he tried to scramble away, her weapon close behind. He kicked behind him without turning back and felt the cold steel fly from her hand.
A voice in his head said run. But every muscle in his body denied it. Standing once more, he turned back to look at her. She had done the same. The staring contest didn't last long, though. He noticed that her sword wasn't in her hand, but it didn't matter. More sparks were gathering around her, building up a deadly weapon. Ranger did the only thing he could. He charged her. Just as she was about to release all the energy, they both tumbled back to the floor. He didn't stop there though. He hurried past her and grabed the fallen weapon. Turning back, she was just gathering herself from the ground again. His voice was rough and broken, but he still managed to taunt.

"Tired already?" Her eyes flared, and he felt a small shock go through him. Both weapons fell back to the ground, but she only retrieved one and he the other. They kept clashing, blades flashing, thrusts, and parries. He shot another arrow. She responded with another lash of viciousness. With clothes torn and bleeding, they once again found each other face to face. Sword and knife between their bright green, neither budged, neither retreated. He could easily reach for an arrow, but he didn't. Nyx could easily drop him dead. But she didn't. Instead, she spit in his eye. Bellowing out his displeasure, she pushed him back on the ground. But again, he didn't stay there long enough to die.

Overhand. Sideways block. Stalemate. Coulé. Her arm was now bleeding. The invisible circles were painted by their feet once again. Around and around, neither one dared approach the other. More lightning, this time from above. Nyx stopped in her tracks, so he imitated him. She was looking behind him, but he didn't buy it. A distraction wouldn't work on him. However, she had been guiding a bolt of lightning through the grass, around him, and up his back. Now he felt it burn a hole in his tunic. He yelled out, in anger not pain, and she giggled.
As the fight dragged on, he considered what the outcome might be. He still loved her, but she was no longer herself. No longer a Stari. Everytime their swords danced and kissed, they grunted and growled. But she was thinking the same thing. He was getting tired, but he knew using so much electricity would be wearing her down. She was one of the Stari's strongest, but power wasn't infinite, and neither was she. He wasn't paying attention. She ducked and swung from below. A cut spread across his chest. She kept attacking, but he managed to sidestep the rest of the blows. He hit her with the hilt of the knife across the back, she stumbled forward.
Perhaps a dog had more beauty than the two of them at the moment, but the graze with which they fought made the soldiers watching tremble. They were perfect chaos in their battle, none other would have stood a chance intervening. They stepped back to size each other up. A torn legging, bleeding leg beneath, bruised back and chin, bleeding nose. That was Nyx. He was cuts and bruises and all the injured bones to go. But they were standing strong and heavy. Yet, the storm had turned into a quiet type of beauty. The rain thundered around them, but it was only a slight drizzle on their faces. He could even smell the petrichor, it was perfuming their eyes.
Without any more waiting, she charged up a final blast. It would be of a high performance rate, would knock out anyone caught in it. But Ranger was ready. He had been waiting, he had spent years learning to watch for it. To be prepared. And he was. The silver omen was smooth and polished as he reached for it behind his back, specially mined and crafted for this moment. He nocked it, and she saw. But she laughed inside. Another arrow, after all, she had torn up hundreds already. Besides, this bolt would be stronger and an arrow wouldn't be enough to stop it.

He fired. She let it go.
But the bolt didn't spread like she had been hoping. It was almost frozen before her, as if it was trying to swim through water. Looking at Ranger, she could see why. His eyes were deadly focused, the green more luminescent than ever before. His hands were clenched, the knuckles turning white. His teeth gritted against each other, and his head was pounding. But his mind had grown stronger, and he was able to do it. Slow-motion. He made the arrow fly slowly through the electric charge, gathering all the energy it needed, and then straight to her leg. She was too stunned to do anything about it. It felt eternal, but the moment was ephemeral. The bolt traveled through the highly conductive weapon, up her leg, and to her heart. Normally, lightning was no problem for her. But the suddenness had taken her out of the game. It sparked up every nerve, lit up every neuron, and blocked any thought from her body. He approached her slowly as she twitched and crumbled once the shock was finally over.

But she didn't fall. There were arms there to catch her. One behind her back, the other around her waist. He held her, and looked straight at her eyes only inches away. The rain felt like air to them now. They were calm. They were over. "We could have been so much more," he whispered, and tears welled in her eyes. He leaned in and kissed her, passionately, let all the emotion of years of waiting flow through. And she, weak as she was, kissed him back. It was only interrupted by her gasp for air as the knife he had been holding traveled through her chest, breaking her remaining determination to live. He gasped as well, as though the weapon had gone through them both, and didn't blink as her emerald jewels faltered and, after everything, failed.
Still holding her, he used his free hand to retrieve the knife and drop it on the ground. Then he made a fist over his heart, and slowly bowed his head. "May the rains forever bless your forests, Nyx Celeste." His voice was grave. His hand then moved behind her head and freed her hair from the stiff and soldierly ponytail. Dark hair showered down around her, smooth and glistening in the rain, gorgeous to his eyes. She had always looked better this way. He slowly laid her on the ground, closing her eyes with his ring and index fingers. A princess of the forest, to be one with it once more, at rest at last.

Unsmiling, unfeeling, he stood up straight, walked over to his coat, placed it around his shoulders, and raised his hand to the sky, the Stari Royal Ring evident. The motion quieted down the Logatan army's whispers and gasps for their fallen leader. He spoke clear and loud, his voice reverberating past the noise of the storm and the crackling of the fire between them.
"This land is guarded by the Stari, and so it shall remain. You have seen our power, our will to live. Go now, flee back to your benevolent Imperator. Tell him of what has happened on this day. If you know what is to come, you'd do well to take the first leave of absence you can and get the hell out of this army. Because we have something you don't. And it is something you can never take away. Something you will never defeat, but fail against it every time."
He turned around, walked over her body, and left them staring there. Guideless without their Commander, leaderless without their General. None of them shot at him, or screamed. They just stared. Dara tried to follow close by, but was afraid of his passive rage. He reached the edge of the forest, payed no attention to his cousin sitting nearby, and walked on into the silence. And he welcomed it with open arms.

Unnerved by the display they had just witnessed, many of the soldiers fled without a thought, no destination in mind, just as far away from the blood-soaked field as they could. This was only a small portion of the force, though, but the remaining 250 were inclined to also flee. One man among them, though, Jason, moved his horse to the forefront. He had always had a bit of a crush on the secretive general, and now seeing her cut down like this made his blood boil. So he decided to take charge of the force and lead them to victory. "Troops! They might be more powerful than us, but we still outnumber them five to one! So let's take them! Imperator Rhykim will reward us greatly if we bring back the traitors' heads!" He continued to encourage them, goading their bloodlust until they were near shouting. Then he led them in a charge, skirting what little remained of the fire and galloping towards the trees where the Stari awaited.

Luna gave a cry of distress as her mistress fell. She had waited back as Nyx had asked, confident in the Stari's abilities. They had been through so much since leaving the forest nearly ten years ago. Now it was over. She tried to get closer to Nyx, but the charging horses kept her back. So she fled. Amaya would need to know of her twin's end.

Narus watched the battle with interest. They were both skilled combatants, and had personal history with the other, so it was interesting to watch how they fought. Shortly after they started, Felgrand walked over to him, and his master looked at him. "Getting used to the new tail?" he asked.
Felgrand nodded. "It's a bit of nuisance, but I'll manage," the cat answered.
"Good," was the only verbal reply, but Narus reached down and scratched his cheetah's head before returning to the fight.
They started to have discussions about the combatant's actions, and how they would have acted had they been in the fight. Jumping to the left instead of the right, swinging backhand instead of forehand, and the like. Then, just as it seemed Nyx would win, Ranger fired his special arrow, and she dropped.

Surprised by this sudden turn of events, Narus nearly lost control of the lightning he had been keeping restrained in the clouds. Hastly forcing it back into its prison, Narus missed what happened immediately afterwards, and when he reverted his attention back to the ground, his cousin was walking toward them. Smirking as his cousin passed by his seating spot, Narus decided to have a little fun.
Congratulations on your win," he said. "Though I'm sorry for your loss." His voice was cold and taunting. Before Ranger could reply however, they heard a shout arise from the army. Turning is attention to the oncoming troops, Narus's smirk turned into a full-fledged smile. "It seems they didn't heed your warning, cousin. But don't worry." Narus slowly rose from his position and pulled his katana up with him. Turning to oncoming threat, he got a gleam in his eye. "I'll take care of this rabble"

Ignoring the looks of shock he was certain he got, Ranger's cousin simply extended his katana to point at the place where had been trapping the lightning. Every single bolt that had been creating by the storm had been redirected to one single point and held there until its master decided it was needed. Smiling once more, the Chief of the Stari simply lowered his blade to point at the army, and they then knew the full power of the Stari. With a deafening explosion, what seemed like a column of light slammed into the foolish men, dozens of bolts screamed down to the soldiers from the heavens, laying waste to the group. Every single one brought death where it landed, and then went to find more victims, killing them as well. In less then a second, the task was done. 250 soldiers lay dead and smoldering.

Lowering his blade to the ground, Narus gasped as the consequences of his action kicked in. His vision swam and his head felt like it was splitting open. Doing everything in his power to appear unfazed, Narus turned to face the Stari.
"Well, we had better not stay here," He addressed is cousin as though this was an everyday occurrence. He walked off, smiling at the stunned faces of Ranger and the rest of the Stari.
            Worth it, He thought.

Ranger stared after Narus. He was stunned, but not by the sheer demonstration of power. He was used to the Stari and the magical prowess of which they were capable of. But what Narus had done was unthinkable. Those men had not been guilty of crimes Rhykim had forced them to do. Yes, they followed behind the Imperator and had not heeded Ranger's warning, but knocking them all down without giving them a chance to fight? There was no honor in that. Ranger had killed Nyx, he loved war, and he would fight till all his enemies lay before him. But he did not take death lightly. He had killed the Stari that had been spying on him for being a blundering fool. He had killed Nyx because her love was only a weakness and an obstacle before his designated path. But Narus had killed the soldiers to brag his power.
Ranger's hand tensed around the knife that was still soaked in Nyx's blood. He was tempted, very tempted to use his power now. He could force the air coming in and out of his lungs to stop, and that would be the end of it. But he didn't. He was able to catch sight of the gasp Narus had given just after his demonstration was over. Using all that power had hurt him, and while he did his best to hide it, the corners of Ranger's mouth curled upward. He could still wait a while longer.
Some of the Stari that had come with Ranger from the forest now gathered near him. It was clear they weren't comfortable following Narus blindly. Dara waited by his feet as well. He was still very quiet from the battle he had just fought, but he was trying hard to keep his cool, for the sake of them. "Come. Rhykim's response will be swift, his retribution deadly. We ought not be caught near this forest again." He followed his cousin, albeit slowly, and the others went behind him.

The whole event just amazed Tara. She was Stari by blood, but she didn't have the training these guys did. She was a skilled archer, but even she couldn't match the skill of these Stari. The battle between Nyx and the chef's cousin was just... She'd seen the twin generals practice, so she'd known what Nyx was capable of. But to see her brought down by such a simple piece. She clicked her claws together, wondering what exactly Ranger had used. Would it be possibly to make something like for other weapons, not just the bow? She'd have to try retrieving it when there wasn't so much going on.
Without warning, lightning rent the field. The soldiers that had decided to fight are were left scattered on the field as little more than smoking husks. Tara stared at them in shock. What in the sun devil's name happened? Then she noticed the looks Narus was receiving. He had done that? He just killed a whole army on his own? Her respect for the Stari just increased, and she wondered if her talent with sand could be made so deadly. The most she could do was make dust clouds and increase her speed. In the mean time, she wanted to get what she could of the metal pieces still on the field and use it for scrap metal.

Narus, Ranger, and Tara move to The Mountain Base
