Once Aria had stepped outside the city gates and into the misty air of Logata Field, she felt a new sense of freedom. It had been a long time since she had been outside the confinement of stone walls. And it felt great. She couldn’t see too far with all the fog, but could feel the vast openness of the field.

She didn’t stand there for long. Aria began to run, experiencing the excitement of escaping a place, almost having that feeling of being chased, although that was unlikely. All she saw ahead of her was the dewy grass and a haze of bleak, gray mist. Even though she couldn’t see exactly where she was headed, she knew she would reach the mountain range in the west that divided the island. Her plan was to pass through them, and she knew the general location of Pinehaven on the other side where mountains meet forests. Visiting the old village was the best idea she could come up with to find any clues on locating her brother.

Despite the fact that she was losing sleep for this, Aria was filled with energy and ran nonstop for an amount of time that amazed herself. There was no chance of seeing the city behind her, but it was obvious that she had gone far. Soon she stopped even paying attention to whatever was ahead and just kept running into oblivion.

By the time she had finally begun to tire out, Aria’s leg hit something and she tumbled over onto her back. She was breathing too heavily to curse, and only now she realized how much the running had actually worn her out. Sitting up, she looked around. What she had fallen over was a big rock, and ahead she saw them--looming, rocky mountains, rising way higher than the weather allowed her to perceive. She rested for a little while, and then began the tiresome trek through the range. It didn’t take long to figure out that this would be the hardest part of her trip. With how dense the mountain range was, she had to do lots of climbing, which was not something she had done before at all. She could tell that there was about no chance of finding an easy way through, so climbing was something she was going to have to deal with. She figured it wouldn’t be too bad. She was a relatively strong teenage girl, and climbing didn’t seem to require much more than muscle and common sense.

When the sun slowly emerged from the horizon, light was cast on the mountain face, and as it grew brighter it was much easier to see through the fog. Soon she could see way further than she had hours ago, and learned that the view of the fatal drop below wasn’t the most settling thing to look at. She kept her eyes upwards, but as she gained altitude she only grew wearier, and the slope only grew steeper. Climbing had not been quite as simple and easy as she initially believed.

Not far into the morning, Aria finally reached a stopping point. Once she had arrived at a cliff big enough to feel comfortable, she sat against a rock to rest. Her mouth was dryer than a desert and her stomach begged to be fed. Fortunately she had been smart enough to bring some food, however she worried that if she would be climbing into the next night, it wouldn’t last. There was still a lot of mountain to be climbed, and the other side was nowhere near. She had not gotten far into the mountains yet, and could still see Logata’s eastern side. Taking out water and bread, she ate while admiring the view of Logata Field. It was much clearer now, and she had gotten pretty high up. Now that it wasn’t so hazy, she could see the city far in the distance. It was no doubt a nice place to be, the safest, wealthiest place in Logata. Living in the castle was especially nice, but Aria preferred reuniting with her brother over the luxuries. Her departure was bound to happen. With how she had been carried into the castle by soldiers as a child, something was clearly not right. Her trainer probably even expected her to vanish one day. Plus, she was sick of the city scene. It was great to be outside and free, and she had a natural yearning to be in the scenic forests of west Logata, the place she had been stolen away from. After eating, Aria dozed off to a rather deep sleep, for a bed of rocks.

    "You missed."
Jack glared at the light grey lynx beside him as the mountain goat above them hurried even further away. "I can see that, Sylv. Let me remind you that I'm not that good with my ice. Trying to spear him with an icicle is rather difficult."
She shook snow from her fur. "You don't need to remind me."
"I just did remind you," he said with a frown.
"Negative," she growled, whacking him with a heavy paw. "I said don't."
"Oh. Sorry." He gave her a sheepish smile.
She rolled her eyes. "Let's just get going so we can have some food for tonight."

      *The next day*

The climbing only got harder. Aria found herself in a sea of stone, and it seemed the only way to go was up. She was lost, had found herself on the wrong side of the mountains from time to time, and had a few discouraging falls. She took back her early assumptions of scaling the mountains. The worst thing was that she hadn't supplied herself with enough food to last this long. She had been expecting to find something to eat on her way to Pinehaven, and hadn't been expecting the trip to take this long. It probably wouldn't have if it wasn't for her injuries. Killing a mountain goat would be simple, but with what she had, cooking wouldn't be possible. Maybe her castle life had just kept her from the knowledge she needed to survive like this. She was supposed to become a soldier, after all.
A starving and rather chilly Aria sat down under the overhang of a cliff, losing hope rapidly. Passing through the mountains should have been much easier. She had some bruises and scrapes from falls, and had put a shirt on under her breastplate to protect her from the cuts and the cold, but clothing didn't do anything to avoid impact. Maybe she would have been through by now if she hadn't landed on her ankle so funny earlier. That morning she had gripped a loose rock, falling a good distance onto her foot. It was the most painful thing and she was sure it was sprained, while fearing it was completely broken. She wasn't comfortable in any way, but knew she was going to get out of this somehow. For now, she was just going to have a little rest before continuing on...

"Maybe you should just let me do the hunting," Sylvanas grumbled. "Maybe then we'd have something for dinner."
"You're supposed to be finding it," Jack retorted. "If we're not finding anything, it's because you're not doing a good job."
She snorted and trotted on, her wide feet making hardly any noise on the snow or the rocks showing through it. After a few moments, her tufted ears pricked. "Odd..."
        "What?"
        "Human."
        "Sorry. I haven't bathed in a while."
She glared at him. "While that's true, that's not what I'm talking about. There's a human down there, under that outcropping."'
Jack frowned at her, then hurried down the rocky ground to where the lynx had indicated. Sure enough, there was a girl there, huddling out of the biting wind. Her foot was positioned rather awkwardly, as if it pained her. All in all, she looked miserable. But Jack had never seen a girl before, other than his mother, so she was a strange sight to him, although a pretty one. "Hey, are you okay?" He knelt in front of her, eyes wide with concern. Sylvanas stood behind him, keeping an eye on their surroundings.

Aria's eyelids barely opened when she heard a boy speak to her. Kneeling in front of her she saw two--no, one guy looking back into her eyes. She muttered something that sounded a bit like "'Course I am," and with a dreamy smile she let her eyes shut again as her head fell back to rest. Soon her eyes fluttered half-open again, and she looked back at the boy. "Wait, wha..." she mumbled once more with a weak sounding voice. She felt the need to stand up, but was still nearly asleep and couldn't help sitting there. She was too dazed to even recognize her own danger, and she had no thoughts about the ankle injury as it was numb at the moment.

Only when she nearly passed out did Jack realize that this girl was blue with cold. He was nearly impervious to cold, and Sylvanas' thick fur kept her from feeling its effects either. But he knew what the cold could do to those ill prepared, and this girl was feeling them. He gathered her up and hurried to his cave, noticing with alarm that she wasn't that much warmer than himself. He had remembered while his parents were still alive, that his parents had felt much warmer than he did. He had always felt that the ice in his veins kept him from feeling the cold, and that they had felt warmer because Hekate never carried that ice, and Orion had passed it on to him.
Sylvanas led the way to the cave and immediately hopped on the fur bed she and Jack shared. He set the girl down beside her and pulled some of the fur over her. Neither he nor Sylvanas ever needed blankets, so after his parents' deaths, the blankets they had were used to give their bed more cushioning. On the downside, the very rare times he had someone who needed the use of his bed, he wasn't able to provide them the warmth they needed. Sylvanas usually did, though, often enjoying the excuse to snuggle with someone warmer than a block of ice.
As soon as the girl was settled, Jack pulled off her boot and rolled up her legging to check her ankle. He winced as he saw the purple swelling and knew her ankle was sprained. He laid his hand on it and focused, lowering his temperature even further. After a moment, he removed his hand, leaving a sheen of ice on the injury. Hopefully, that would be enough to help the swelling go down. Until then, he'd see what sort of food he had stored and what he could make from it, in addition to what he had managed to catch before finding the girl.

Aria smiled a little when the man took her in his arms and began carrying her over the rocks. Strangely, being held by a stranger in the freezing mountains felt comforting. It didn't take long for her to drift back into a light sleep while he carried her.
The next time Aria woke up, she was in a bed very different from the one she had been sleeping in days before. Her only guess was that she was in a cave somewhere in the mountains where this man lived. To her surprise, the man who had carried her here was in the middle of removing her boot and rolling up her legging to reveal her lower leg. She wasn't quite sure what was going on but made no effort to stop him. "We're doing this already?" she babbled with the same, sleepy voice as before and a lazy giggle. She was still fighting sleep. Then she was surprised even more when her ankle froze up. She couldn't really feel it, but she could see it. Right from the man's hand, a layer of ice had been left on her ankle. Aria still lacked strength and couldn't resist resting even more, and as the man left the room she ended up dozing off once again.

Jack found some dried meat and made a stew with it and some mountain roots. They were tough, but once they had sat in the hot water long enough, they softened to a tasty meal. It was the only reason he ever light a fire, to cook. Sylvanas didn't even really like fire, and always attempted to avoid being nearby. The only reason she was remaining on the bed with the girl was because she recognized the need for her warmth. And because she was laughing about the girl's response to his treating of his injury. Jack didn't really get it, but the lynx was more mature than he.
After a little while, Jack ladled some of the stew into a bowl and took it to the girl, gently shaking her awake. "Hey. Eat this, should help chase away the chill."
"Is that my bowl?" Sylvanas asked, glaring at the stone dish.
"Of course not," he said. "It's my bowl. Yours holds more." She snorted and laid her head back down.

Aria forced herself to sit up when the stranger came back with a bowl, with a bit less difficulty than she would have had before. It appeared her mind was beginning to get back to where it was supposed to be, but she still felt weak. "Thank you," she said as she took the bowl, her gratitude not completely evident in her still quiet voice. She did not feel very hungry, but did indeed feel cold, and began to eat. As the man had said, it did help beat out the chill in her skin. Strangely, the more she ate the hungrier she got, but after a bowl she wasn't starving anymore. And, she was much closer to the right state of mind. Yet, as her head began to function properly, her ankle began to ache. "I'm sorry," she began, with a much clearer voice than before. "I guess that medicine I took this morning had some unforeseen side-effects..." She hoped the man would understand that she had been acting loopy because of the medicine, and that wasn't what she was like naturally. "Really, thanks for taking me in. What's your name?"

"Jack," he answered. "And that's Sylvanas. And what's medicine?" His parents had only ever used herbal poultices and teas, nothing as simple as the medicines made in the city. Sylvanas shifted to lay her head on her lap. The lynx watched the humans through narrowed eyes, to which Jack replied with an upraised eyebrow. She snorted and flicked her ear, settling more comfortably into the bed.

Aria let out a faint chuckle when Jack asked what medicine was. He looked too old to not know what medicine was, so she just found it a bit funny, and possibly cute. She didn't respond for a moment but then turned her head and saw his expression. Then she realized that he might have lived in the mountains his whole life, in which case me might not be familiar with things she was. "I don't know much about it," she began attempting to explain medicine clearly. "But it's a fluid with some ingredients like crushed up herbs in it, and people use it to deal with injuries and illnesses. In my case, I used it to make my ankle hurt less." She added with a smile, "Sometimes they do extra things you don't need." She was a bit embarrassed from what had happened, but could still laugh over it. It wasn't that bad, because Jack was still very mysterious to her and so far she wasn't too conscious about what he though about her. Now that the pain was returning to her ankle, she had other things to focus on. But it was still nice to keep chatting. "So, you live here?" she assumed. "We come from very different homes, then." She was amazed that the young man actually lived in the mountains, if she guessed right. Why live in the wilderness when you can live in the safety of civilization?

Jack nodded thoughtfully. This medicine sounded like the teas his parents would brew, only more powerful. And if they made her a bit loopy, they had side-affects the teas didn't. He smiled. "Yeah, just me and Sylv. Sometimes we see other people, but we usually keep to ourselves. Quieter that way. Safer too."
"That's a matter of perspective," the lynx commented. [i]"We're just as safe either way."
"That's not what I meant and you know it," he scolded mildly. Sylvanas rolled her eyes and laid her head back down.

Aria smiled as Jack spoke to the animal on the bed in a tongue she couldn't understand. They were almost like siblings it seemed, despite being completely different creatures. And for living in the wild mountains with only each other, they appeared to be fairly happy. Aria knew she wouldn't like that kind of life, but it was still interesting to witness. "You like it here?" she asked, continuing the small chat without trying to sound rude. She knew she was going to have to go soon to keep searching for her brother, but she wasn't totally fit for this kind of travel. She was lucky this man had stumbled across her earlier. Perhaps she could get him to join her. He seemed like he could make a nice companion, and he was obviously well suited in the mountainous environment. He was no doubt a strong guy, and Aria couldn't help admiring his athletic build.

Jack nodded. "Of course I do. I grew up here. I like the quiet, the mild air, the peace and serenity achieved from the open spaces. Don't you?"
Sylviana snorted. "Of course she doesn't. It's too cold up here."
He frowned at her. "Wouldn't too cold mean no?"
                            "You're hopeless."

"I suppose I would have to toughen up a bit before I could enjoy myself up here," Aria said after Jack and his Lynx yapped back and forth. "I see why you like it, though. Just colder than I'm used to." Only now she noticed that all Jack wore for a top was a fur vest. She was amazed at how comfortable he seemed, as she wore a little more than he did, and was still shivering slightly under the blanket.
