  • Waiting in the Mountains

Nyx breathed in the mountain air. She surveyed her surroundings, trying to get an idea of a strategic way to flank the city most effectively. As she looked around, she caught a glimpse of her travelling companion and field commander, Ranger. She had known him ever since she was a little girl, but they hadn't seen each other since Nyx had left the forest with Amaya. He looked different now; his muscles were bigger and he was much taller, and out of the gawky stage she'd last seen him in. Looks like he might just make a good fighter after all... Nyx thought to herself.

After being sure the rest of the Stari were settling in, Ranger took a deep breath. He didn't feel as comfortable in the mountains as he would've in a forest, but he didn't mind, he just hoped the others would feel the same, after all before leaving the chief had told him he was expecting as few deaths as possible, and he intended to keep that promise. Turning, he saw Nyx, who he hadn't seen for a while. She looked, in his opinion, stunning. Walking up to her, he started, "It looks like little Nyx has grown up, huh?" Dara also walked up and sniffed the air, obviously recognizing Luna's scent. Ranger was actually glad it was Nyx, and not someone ugly that had ended up with him in this war.

Nyx raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, I guess I have," she said quietly. If he only knew the things she'd seen since she left the forest, he'd realize it wasn't just her appearance that had changed. At a loss for words, she watched Luna and Dara sniffing each other. "Looks like you've grown up as well," she added, looking back at Ranger. He didn't look bad at all, which had made travelling with him more pleasant for her. "Let's just hope you're not just a pretty boy now," she said, laughing a little. She knew the chief wouldn't send her with someone who couldn't fight.

Ranger smiled, "Hey, I can be a pretty boy and a fighter, don't worry, I'm the whole package." He winked at her, then chuckled a little, turning to the castle which you could see from here. It was incredible to think, that soon, they would be attacking it...incredible and exciting to him. Oh how he loved war.

Nyx rolled her eyes at Ranger. Well, isn't he full of himself? she thought. She saw excitement in his eyes as he looked at the castle, a feeling that they mutually shared. "We will be flanking the castle, to take the soldiers there by surprise. We will need to make sure we are not spotted so we can keep the element of surprise until we strike." She thought a moment, then said, "I use poison that I mixed on my blade to make it more effective. I have some left over, if you would like to use it on your arrows. Then, even if you miss and just graze them, your prey will fall eventually."

Ranger turned to look at her, "Well, that's a smart idea. Sure, I'd love some." He took off his quiver and began inspecting his arrows. He did think her idea was good, still, he wouldn't miss, he couldn't miss. He didn't think it to be arrogant, but it was true, if he missed, it could mean the loss of life for his people, and he didn't want that. Besides, if he missed, how would he ever impress Nyx?

Nyx dug a few vials of her terrible poison out of the pouch on her belt and held them out to Ranger. She couldn't get over how much he'd changed since she'd last seen him. He was just a couple years older than her, but when she lived in the forest, he never seemed to notice her. No one did, really, because she was so quiet. Nyx never really had much of a social life. The only ones she really did assosiate with were Luna, Amaya, and Solar. She smiled shyly at Ranger. She found him attractive, but she didn't really know how to flirt or anything of that sort. That was Amaya's department.

Ranger took the vials with a kind smile to Nyx, and made sure to brush his hand against hers while he retrieved them. He began impregnating his arrows with the poison, one by one, making sure not to get cut. It was a slow and arduous process, but it was worth it, just like the war. While he did it he began to try and spark a conversation, hoping that one thing would lead to another. "So tell me, how does a gorgeous girl like yourself, find herself leading an army into a war?" He turned to her for a moment, smiling, then turned back to the arrows and the poison.

Nyx smiled back at Ranger. "Well, when Amaya and I left the forest, people were not very kind to us. As you have probably experienced by now, since many people outside of the Stari are unfamiliar with our customs, they find our way of speaking strange. People made fun of Amaya and I for the way we spoke, and so Amaya, being the hot-head she is, hurt them. The one person who was kind to us was Rhykim, who had been exiled by the king. The three of us became friends and Master Rhykim saw our true abilities. We quickly became the two highest ranked in his army, fighting by his side. I tend to play the role of an assassin because I prefer stealth to head-on fighting," Nyx explained. "So how about you? How did you get into this?" she asked, genuinely curious.

Ranger nodded as he processed her story, then took a deep breath before retelling his. "Well, ever since I got Dara, there has been pressure on me from my father. Because we're the family of the chief, he always believed I had to be the best at everything. Of course, it helped me that I was able to adapt quickly, that way I could keep up with everything, from training to farming and such. Still, when due to my fighting abilities I earned a spot as a lieutenant of the army before my 21st birthday, jealous people began giving me a hard time. Of course when I got promoted to field commander, they tried to bring hell on me. But, I survived, and now I take every chance I can to get away from that forest. So of course, when I heard of this war, I immediately asked to come." He took on another arrow when he added, "And of course, imagine the look on my face when I learned I was gonna be fighting with you." He smiled at Nyx.

Nyx smiled and hoped he wouldn't notice her pale skin begin to blush. "Oh really? You were happy to see me?" She had been trying to hide the happines in her voice with sarcasm, but she didn't know if it would work. She wasn't used to people flirting with her. The guys always went for Amaya because she was more of a people person.

Ranger smiled at the girl's blush, and at the way she tried to act unmoved, it was very cute. He looked back at the arrows. "Well yeah, I mean when you lived in the village still you were always an excellent fighter, don't think I didn't notice," he began, looking up for a moment. "And of course, I can't deny you were like a star in the darkness, illuminating everything with your dashing beauty." He winked.

This time, there was no way Nyx could have hidden her blushing. Nobody had ever said anything that sweet to her before. "Thank you," she said, smile gleaming. "I remember you were an amazing fighter yourself," Nyx continued. She decided to stop trying to act cold and tough towards him. Not many.people were nice to her, and she didn't want to ruin it. Besides, she really wasn't lying. Ranger was one of the best, if not the best, archers she'd ever seen.

Ranger grinned, whether she was saying it to be nice, or whether she really meant it, it felt nice to hear someone say that. After all, back home everyone was so jealous of him, no one ever complimented him. "Thanks," he said, "it feels amazing to hear someone say that, specially coming from you." He smiled at her, she was beautiful.

Nyx was slightly puzzled. "What do you mean? I was nobody special back in the forest. My praise shouldn't mean any more to you than any one else's." Back when she lived in the forest, Nyx never really had any friends, so she wasn't very high up on the social ladder. People never really payed much attention to her when she lived there, so she was surprised by how Ranger seemed to think her opinion was something valuable.
