Layla hid a cringe. She didn't like fire. She understood why fire was neccessary, but since it had taken her cheetah partner and scarred her, she had tended to avoid it. She had learned to make edible meals without its heat, and she had made several feather blankets, thanks to her bird tongues. Her telepathy allowed her to avoid animals and people in the dark, and she was learning, slowly, how to sense trees and other plants with her thoughts as well.
She shook herself. She could come up with a reason to leave, and she would have the fire put out as soon as Jenna had finished cooking. She started off for the forest, leading the way out of the town. She smiled at Jenna as she heard the thoughts. "If the Stari don't accept you, I'm afraid no one will, witchling. The Stari will accept you. We are the closest to the goddesses, and as such are blessed with gifts. We are cast out of the society here, much as you are, for our gifts, our traditions, ever our accents. You will fit in easily. I can teach you the language of birds if you desire, and I shall teach you our customs so you do not offend, but I doubt you could anyways." Then she realized something. "I am sorry. I have just realized I never introduced myself." She placed her fist on her heart and bowed to the witch. "I am Layla Serino. Layla smiled. "You will fit in even more with the Stari then. We feel closest to the stars and the goddess Farore." She pursed her lips thoughtfully. "I understand what you mean about understanding a person's spirit. Several of my tribe are psychic and can hear thoughts." She didn't mention that she was among them. "It is... difficult... to understand the hardship they bear, the pain others do not share. This is the main reason they try avoiding the wounded and dieing. While their help is often invaluable, the pain they feel tends to be too much." Her voice caught a minute as her mind flashed to when her partner died. Her mind had been linked with Twinkle, so firmly established after so much time spent with her, that she had felt even instant of pain as if it was her own. She had been so closely bound when the cheetah had died that she almost followed Twinkle's spirit. It was one of the few times the other psychics had been called upon, to pull her mind back.
Layla gave herself a firm shake. Yes, this was the reason she did not go by other beings, because she couldn't bear to feel phantom pain again. Yes, she tended to keep her mind much more closed than was comfortable when among others. That was no reason for her to dwell on it. She needed to keep her emotions more firmly controlled when with this witchling. Purposely or not, she seemed to have an affect on the Stari. Layla was tempted to pick up speed, but she knew that she was much faster than Jenna. Her whole purpose right now was to lead her to the witch in the Stari camp. "that's amazing" Jenna said, that's when she noticed the sadness in Layla's eyes even I can see she has been through a lot she thought. Layla sighed as she heard Jenna's thoughts. Not hidden anymore, is it, even with the mask, she thought. Then she anchored her mind in Jenna's. Yes. I have felt much pain. I will not tell you how, or why. "I hope so" Jenna said "I mean, I'm sure I'm safe and all with you, but I've never been in a forest at night. I've never even been in a field at night actually. I can usually scare someone into giving me a room, sometimes a guy will think I'm cute and offer for me to stay the night, that hardly happens though.
