Zaria was quiet for a moment, closing her eyes and thinking back on her life. The song sounded familiar, some of the kids she played with often mentioned it and one of the older ones told stories of a monster of some kind... Another one... had some kind of instrument, the melody was perfect, although the rhythm was off. There were words to it as well if she could just remember them... She started humming quietly to the notes, trying to bring back the song. "Is it about a monster?" she finally asked.

"Yeah," Corin answered Zaria. "The Tale of Ubajow." He could just hear Zaria humming, and matched his playing to her. "It's the song about the ship-eating fish guy." The song was in a minor key and moved quick, mainly a sailor song but it held influences from the music of the desert. It was much less calm than the song he had been playing when Zaria walked in.

Zaria lived north of the desert, and didn't pick up the desert influences for the tune, but still kept up with the pace of the humming. She stopped near the end, waiting for Corin to end the song. "There were actual words to the song, right?" she asked. "I think the boy who told that story mentioned the song, his father was a fisherman and they moved inland..." She nodded, tapping the floor with one hand. "I think I heard you a few times before playing it, and I could almost pick out singing."

"Yup, I know every word to the whole thing," Corin told Zaria. "I can teach you the lyrics if you want." He was near the end of the song, playing a final chorus, but he liked teaching people songs anyways. Even though he could sing while playing, he liked it when other people sang along. He found music to be his only cure for sadness, boredom and pain. He rarely had any trouble with his life on the sea, but if he played a song he could take his mind off just about anything.

"I'm not much of a singer, maybe when we're on another long trip you can teach the whole crew." she grinned. "We can even make Jasin sit through it, it'll be glorious. Although, do you know anything about Ubajow? As far as I know he's some sort of sea creature."

"I think my sister has heard the song enough to at least know the chorus," Corin said, still chuckling after Zaria's comment on Jasin. He soon ended his song, leaving the room's atmosphere a bit duller. "As for Ubajow, all I know about him is what the song tells me. There's a whole legend behind him. It says he was once a man who fell in love with some type of a mermaid on the shore of some island. I don't know where. He tried to capture her, and then she somehow cast a spell that took the life out of his body and sent his spirit deep into the ocean, never to return. His spirit eventually wandered into the body of a great, big fish that was once honored by the smaller fish. The fish grew to be a monster, far uglier than any other sea creature, lurking the ocean looking for the mermaid witch who cursed him and destroying everything in his path." There was a pause after Corin finished summarizing the story. Sometimes he didn't like telling it, because of that possibility that it was true. "There's no way of knowing whether it's true or not, but even if Ubajow does exist, we don't have to worry about him. I'm sure he lives in water much deeper than what we sail, and if we ever did come across him, we would be gone before we could do anything about it." Corin knew so much about songs like this from his days on land when he and his sister's father had just left them. While his sister sailed in another man's crew and Corin fished on his own, he sometimes talked with the old sailors at the port who told him ancient tales about the sea, from scary stories of monsters and ghost ships to happy stories about glorious underwater kingdoms. When he was just a young child, Corin had the storytelling ability of the wisest sailors.

Zaria nodded slowly, trying to build a mental image. "I heard country far off there's a giant fish creature honored by the Zora. I think it's a fish anyway, it might be something else." she shrugged. "I never really cared to find out, but this legend is far more interesting. I wonder though, if anybody tried to go looking for him? If Zora have gills they can dive down, and maybe everybody else tried to disguise themselves as mermaids." she snickered at the thought of a crusty old sailor dressed as a beautiful mermaid, trying to lure a sea monster from the depths of the ocean.

"I'm not sure," Corin said, pondering what Zaria brought up. "They say that once a ship is spotted by the monster, it immediately just rams through the hull, having every crew mate for a snack. I have never heard of it being defeated." Corin kept thinking. "But I don't know if anybody has tried. Maybe the few people who have come across him were only making deliveries? If someone was trying, and found him using a great warship, they might be able to cannon Ubajow down. There's no way of knowing how strong he really is, if he does exist, besides being capable of destroying an off-guard ship. For his appearance, all I have heard of him looking like is an oversized, demented fish monster. He surely isn't a serpent or a human-like monster."

Tyra hummed along to the faint notes of her brother's music as she held the tiller steady. She liked listening to him play, although she had little musical skill of her own. She had some rhythm, though, and often accompanied Corin's playing with dancing. It was an excellent past-time and great at lifting spirits.
Now, though, she was more focused on the task ahead. She had heard rumors of a merchant ship with an exceptional cargo. She had immediately set about learning what it was. She had snuck Felix aboard, and used him to secure the cargo and ready it and himself for retrieval. Soon, she would have it in her grasp and add to her ship's legacy. She grinned up at the white flag snapping in the wind above her, then turned her gaze to the sea.
It wasn't long before white sails became visible in the distance. She grinned viciously and yelled, "All hands, ready for battle! Jasin, fly the Jolly Roger! Corin, get on those guns! Zaria, keep an eye on that ship, I want to know the instant it turns, whether to flee or fight!"

Jasin tugged on the rope, hoisting the Jolly Roger up the flagpole. After doing so, he sprinted down into his quarters and grabbed his helm, putting it on as well as grabbing his shield. He strapped the shield to his arm and double checked for his sword, which was in its scabbard as it should be. He sprinted back up onto the deck, then turned back to Tyra. "What sort of resistance can we expect from the people on this ship? Is everybody armed with whatever they have?"
So I'm back, or at least I will be eventually. Trying to reintegrate myself.

Zaria grinned at the call and patted her belt to make sure her knives were secure. "I think we're here," she said excitedly to Corin, running up to the deck without waiting for him. She jumped over the side of the boat and spread her wings, soaring upward and landing to the highest point of the White Wolf to get a clear view of the opposing ship. "Merchant ship in the distance, Tyra!" she shouted over the roar of the wind. "They seem to be turning towards us!"

Corin heard his sister shout from the deck above, and quickly put his guitar on his bed, picking up his golden cutlass on the way out the door. He slid it into a sheath by his belt as he followed Zaria above deck. Once he was outside, Corin headed straight for a cannon. The target ship was far enough away that he couldn't be sure of which side his sister would put it on, but he was experienced with dashing across the deck anyways. His plan was to fire a few regular cannonballs first, to weaken the merchant ship but not sink it, and then he would land a grapple shot onto it to reel it in and keep it where they wanted it.

"Keep your eye on 'em, Hawk, I don't want 'em to turn and run once they realize who we are," Tyra yelled up. "Sparrow, make sure you watch your fire when we pull alongside 'em, Beaver's on board." She turned to Jasin and lowered her voice to a normal level. "It's a merchant ship, so likely the crew itself will be only lightly armed. However, there will be some guards ready to defend their cargo, so we'll get some action from them." She turned the tiller and steered White Wolf so that the approaching ship would be on their starboard bow.

His gentle breaths pushed up the dust from the wooden floorboard into his nose, and he had to make his best effort not to sneeze. It had been a close call. The guards had passed right by him and he had barely had enough time to drop to the floor and hide behind the crates. Even though he was good at sneaking around, Felix was always tense when on ships alien to him. He checked his scabbard to reassure himself that the long sword was still there, then waited for the guards to pass. They were more aggressive than before, yelling at each other and rushing around. Felix was sure by now they had realized some of their precious cargo had been taken. After a few more seconds they turned a corner going to the forecastle. He pushed himself up and turned to finish securing the stolen cargo. It had all been stashed nicely into a cargo box and he now used some spare nails and a hammer he had come across to the secure the lid. His mission had been to steal what Tyra had heard of from other ships, but little did she know they might have hit a gold mine when choosing this ship. Suddenly he heard voices shouting above deck, and he began to feel the slow push of water against the board, meaning the ship was turning. The White Wolf wasn't far away, and he needed to be ready. He had already gone through the mental map of the ship in his head, and knew the fastest way to a hatch leading on deck. Once the first cannonball hit the vessel, he just had to move in the direction the cargo guards had come, take a left, move past the quarterdeck and through the stairs and hatch leading up top. The route took him dangerously close to the captain, but it was a risk he would have to take if he wanted to get out alive, specially when being weighed down by the cargo. He went over the plan mentally again, and took a deep breath. Now it was just a matter of waiting for the first shot.

Tyra turned the tiller so that White Wolf ran parallel to the merchant ship. With quick calculations, she lashed the tiller in place and called for Zaria to reef the sails a bit. Then they'd stay with the ship for as long as it took to pick up Felix and the cargo he had snagged. Then their slower speed would let them drop back and escape. "Fire when ready," she yelled to her brother. "Hawk, keep an eye out for Beaver while in there; I want to get him off there quickly and be able to get away. Wolf," she added turning to him with a grin, "have fun over there." She pulled an eyepatch over her left eye and drew her sword. Now she just had to wait for Corin's attacks to begin. Her grin broadened as she heard her counterpart on the other ship yelling orders. "Too late, old man," she muttered, although she doubted he was too much older than herself. "Your ship is caught in White Wolf's eye. You ain't gettin' nowhere."
