The sensations of Zulo's first cinnamon roll had subsided, and now the reds and oranges from the magnificent sunrise had faded into blue. Blue everywhere. It was an unsettling feeling for the Rito, being a newcomer on his first voyage. It was like a blue desert, and the emptiness almost made Zulo feel like he had died. There was not a sign of life anywhere besides those aboard the White Wolf. No birds flew this far away from shore, and whatever mysteries the ocean's depths contained were covered up by high waves. Fortunately it wasn't storm weather, but the vessel was still rocking a good bit.

Any irregular sight in the vast waters around the White Wolf were hard to miss. Zulo had been keeping his eye on a greyish fin that kept bobbing out of the blue. He had been worried that it was a sea monster, the exact type of thing Zaria had just told him about, but eventually the fin stopped showing up, and with Zaria's skepticism Zulo's fear shrunk. Soon he was calm again, resting on deck with the other Rito taking in the nearly non-existent view.

The ship abruptly lurched in a way too abnormal to be ignored. They were too deep in the ocean to have scraped the bottom, although that's about what it felt like. Zulo was jolted from where he sat and stood up to be ready for any quick movements. Suddenly a dull purple blur obstructed the plain color of the world around them, darting out of the waves and over the deck, somehow managing to stay low enough to almost snag Zulo right from where he stood but without crashing into the boat. He managed to step out of the way to remain unharmed, besides a terrible mental image of big and bloody, sharp teeth being planted in his mind. If he had been caught in them, the Rito would have been shreds in a matter of seconds. In a panic, Zulo scrambled to the stairs, ducking to safety. He had never been so scared in his life, not even when he had been chased by Dracos as a youngster.

Somehow Zaria was not as quick to retreat, and called for Zulo to alarm the crew while she kept an eye on the beast. Still the image of the sea monster lingered in his vision even though it had landed back in the water. It was long yet bulky and had razor sharp features, like it's fins, with unattractive grayish-purple scales. What really stuck with him was the unbelievably ugly face of the giant shark-like monster. Not only did it have a deadly set of teeth, but there were some bone spikes protruding from between it's bright, goopy eyes to stick it's prey. Zulo had never even imagined such ugliness.

He tried his best to stop focusing on the image and hurried downstairs to wake the crew. It appeared that a couple mates had been woken already, but others would still be asleep. Conveniently Zulo spotted a bell which was likely meant for this type of situation. Without hesitation he rung it, receiving a louder noise than he had expected. Now his ears were tingling in pain, but at least it got everyone awake.

Tyra was woken from a delightful dream of relaxing with her family when something jarred the ship. Whatever it was caused her to fall out of bed, banging her elbow and knee against the hard planking. "Son of a sea troll," she cursed as she carefully stood up, testing her injuries carefully. Once she was certain it would only be mild nuisances, she put her sword back on her hip and was moving to grab her jacket and boots when she heard the bell. Usually Felix ran it for meals, but it was too early in the morning for him to be serving lunch. She grabbed her boots and jacket and pulled them on as she hurried topside. "What the blazing storms is going on up here?" she demanded of the young Rito ringing away. Her gaze swept the sea, although she didn't see any ships. The cause of the commotion must have been from the fin that was now circling the ship. "Hawk! Where's my lazy brother at?" she yelled as she moved to take the tiller. "He should have some topside hours ago!"

"Sea monster," Zulo tried to inform the captain, unable to form a full sentence. It appeared he had done a good enough job waking everyone up, but he was dreading the return above deck and hoped he would be able to stay below.

Corin's deep slumber was broken as the ship seemed to make a sharp rock, but he figured it wasn't anything much, just a part of his dreams or a big wave. But soon after, his ears recognized the signal that a meal was ready, and with a satisfying amount of rest he got out of bed and stumbled out of his room. Rarely was the bell used as an alarm, but as soon as he stepped out of his doorway he could tell that was the case today. Immediately Corin's senses kicked fully awake and his laziness disappeared. He was ready for whatever might be awaiting them on the waters, though he was very curious as to what that was. He grabbed his cutlass and sheathed it by his waist, meeting with the others above deck as his sister said something about him not being on watch. It wasn't his fault nobody had come to wake him up. But he was totally awake now, ready to take action behind a cannon or with his blade.

Felix had been more asleep than awake by the time the ship was attacked. He rolled to the side of the wall he was resting against and hit his head. Groaning as he held his forehead, he stood up and wondered what could be possibly going on. When the bell began ringing close by, he frowned knowing no one else would be calling people out to dinner. He watched as Tyra hurried by, running upstairs and followed close behind. He heard Zulo's report and was left in disbelief. Sea monster? Since when did stories come to life? However, they were out in deep sea, where no one had ever gone before. Anything was possible. He waited to see if something was needed of him, holding on to a wooden beam in case the creature came at them again.

"There you are!" Tyra said as she spotted her brother coming on deck. "Thought you'd be coming topside once I woke you and left you a cinnamon roll. Whatever. Get behind the cannon and keep an eye on that fin. Hawk, Feather, I need you to tell me exactly what it did. I felt something hit the bottom and something else made it tilt again, although I didn't feel any impact. Beaver, scour belowdecks, make certain we don't have any leaks. We're too far from any known port to get any help, so make absolutely certain we're not taking any water. If you see Wolf, send him up here, but have Oak help you look."

Corin hurried over to the cannon and was ready to fire, with some ammo already loaded from the day before. He wasn't sure what to expect, having knowledge of various types of sea creatures. There were bigoctos, sharks, the extremely rare sea serpents, and seahat swarms, though if that were the situation he would have seen them already. Whatever it was they were up against, it was waiting below the surface to come up for another attack. He just had to watch intently and react as quickly as possible to avoid any harm to the vessel or it's crew.

Zulo was so terrified it was difficult for him to speak. "I couldn't tell what the boat hit," he stammered. "But not long after, the monster flew out of the water, over the boat. It almost caught me on the way over." He cringed a little as the mental image of the monster returned. He prayed that they would be able to deal with it.

"Aye aye, Cap'n." Felix hurried back to the depths of the White Wolf. He made sure to pass by Wolf's room, and stop to deliver the message. "Jasin! They need you on deck. Now. We're in trouble." With that he moved on, hurrying even further below and making sure there were no signs of leaks anywhere. He hadn't seen Oak yet, and hoped he would find them soon. The ship was too big for him to check out in its entirety on his own. As he passed by a small thick glass window, he noticed something swim by. It was too big to be seen through just the window, and Felix was sure it was exactly what they were under attack from. He gulped and kept going, intent on not missing any small leak.

"It was big, Cap'n," Zaria said in addition to Zulo's explanation. "Could easily keep us fed for a month, if it's any good."
Tyra smiled. Trust Zaria to see a positive. She was about to ask for more details, such as any teeth, or possibly how thick the sails were, when something rammed the side of the ship. With a curse, she turned the tiller so it moved with the hit, hoping this would lessen any damage caused by the impact. "Whatever it is, we need to either deal with it, or outsail it. I don't want to let White Wolf take any more hits if I can help it. Hawk, port side. Feather, starboard. Keep an eye for that thing and give Sparrow a target. Sparrow, first chance you get, blow it outta the water. Even if you miss, that should give us a few minutes to get the wind behind us and head off."

Zulo stood still when Tyra gave the order to watch starboard side, not only because he was scared featherless but also because his sailing vocabulary was not broad enough to understand the term. Then he saw Zaria headed to the left side of deck, so with a sigh he forced himself in the opposite direction. Before he had even arrived, the dreadful beast leapt into the air once again, going for another cross-deck snatch. Zulo watched in horror as the monster emerged, but fortunately it was not anywhere near him this time around, being on the other side of the ship.

"Holy bombchus!" Corin exclaimed as something slammed into the ship. He could tell they were up against a big fish. He was skilled on the cannon and had a knack for catching fish, so he hoped his talents wouldn't fail him now.
"Here, fishy." he taunted as he waited for the creature to reveal itself. He was quite curious about it after seeing Zulo scared out of his skin. Maybe the lad just wasn't seaworthy.
Finally the monster showed up on his side of the ship, sailing out of the water like Corin had seen some fish do, only with much more air and much less grace than normal. He was in awe at the sight of a sea monster, but made sure he kept focus. He had to swivel the cannon a bit as the monster had emerged at a bad angle for shooting, and let a round shot rip. He had not been quick enough this time around, but had still managed to blow off a chunk off the creature's tail. With great speed, the monster continued flying over the White Wolf, flopping more violently and unsteadily than it had been at takeoff. The shot had slightly altered it's course and the beast ripped through a sail. Corin would remember to repair that. The monster managed to land on the other side of the ship, barely hitting the gunwale. It's rotation had altered, so the monster landed in a flop as a child would learning how to dive.

Zulo threw himself on the floor and took cover as he heard the ear-splitting crack of a cannon, followed by a rip, fish-shrieks, and a massive splash which resulted in a load of sea water pouring down on the Rito. He got to his feet rather gloomily, discovering that a chunk of wood had been smashed off the side of the ship nearby. Luckily, the damage was done high enough that it wouldn't let water in. Remembering Tyra's order to watch the waters, Zulo returned to looking over the side of the ship, only catching a glimpse of the monster. It would only be a matter of time before the monster stuck again.

Felix stumbled and fell when he felt the ship take another blow to its side. Holding his head which had begun pounding, he stood back up, only to hear a loud sound that reverberated throughout the entire ship. He knew it was the cannon, which meant they were firing on the monster. He kept going, hoping that the last blow hadn't caused any major damage. Specially since he'd heard a loud crashing sound just after the cannonball was fired.

"That's how you do it, Sparrow!" Tyra cheered as her brother got the fish. She did get a good look at the beast, though, noting its large teeth and horned brow. She also noted the beady eyes and wondered if they actually would have a chance of outsailing it. It was still pretty big, though, and she tapped her foot against the deck. "Better not be putting any holes in my ship, mister," she muttered. In answer, the fish banged against the ship again, although not quite as powerfully as before.

After the monster returned underwater, it remained hidden for a while, and once again Corin was waiting, tightly gripping the cannon in anticipation. There had been a spike of action when the monster had flown over the ship, but things quickly grew calm again. The monster didn't even slam into the ship. But Corin knew to be ready for another shot.

"I'm not seeing anything," Zulo called from across deck. From their side, Corin and Zaria didn't see much of the monster either.

Just when it seemed the beast had retreated, Zaria alerted that the monster was swimming to the surface. Now that Corin had received an early warning and knew just what to expect, he was able to land a solid hit on the monster. As the monster torpedoed from the water and soared through the air, Corin fired, this time nailing the more dense part of the monster's body. Much to his distaste, crimson blood showered down on Corin and Zaria, and in mid-air, the monster seemed to stop in it's tracks, falling downward with a thud onto the ship's deck. Fortunately, the fall was not far enough to cause the White Wolf damage, although now a more appropriate title would be the Red Wolf, because from it's cannonball-sized wound the ship was being painted in blood.
Corin would have felt a sense of accomplishment if the monster hadn't damaged a sail and poured so much blood on the deck. And the battle wasn't even over yet. On the deck, the huge monster relentlessly thrust it's body about and flopped like the giant fish it was. Some blood was spewed outwards, soaking crew members even more. Corin made a quick, adrenaline induced decision to finish the monster off as quickly as possible. He was on the monster's tail side, but his plan was to jump down the length of the beast's body and plant his cutlass in it's head to finish it off, assuming that would be the sweet spot.
His plan didn't carry through as smoothly as imagined, however. As he sprinted for the leap, Corin was swept off his feet as the monster's meaty tail swung by. He landed a good distance away, close to his sister. He got up no problem, with only a lack of wind in his lungs and bruises from his landing on the hard wood planking. As he looked at the creature swinging away, he realized that it might have been a blessing he had been swept aside, considering the likelihood of getting speared by it's face horn, or getting caught in it's unforgiving jaws. He restrained himself from running back for another try.
"Any ideas?" he asked his sister through a heavy pant. There was too much going on in his mind to come up with anything better than what he had previously tried, and failed.

Violent oaths erupted from Tyra as the fish landed on her ship, causing it to drop in the water rather quickly before bobbing back up. She could feel the weight, though, pulling at the tiller and tilting the boat. "Someone do something before that thing capsizes us!" she roared, trying to keep the ship balanced as the fish continued to struggle.
Corin attempted to do just that, drawing his sword and charging for the head. However, the thrashing tail hit him, sending him sprawling on the deck towards where she continued to fight the tiller and spit curses. Apparently approaching was out of the question, but how else would they kill the over-grown guppy? The cannon couldn't turn to face the deck, not that she would have let anyone attempt the shot, as it would have put a hole in her ship. And none of them carried ranged weapons. Then she remembered.
"Feather! You want to prove that launching stick of yours is any good? Kill this scaly demon so we can keep the blood from staining! Do you know how hard it is to get blood out of this wood?"

The monster's landing on deck had been too much for Zulo, and now he was hiding away in the back corner of the deck. He was completely terrified, and just wanted it all to end. His eye caught Corin being knocked aside by the monster tail, only adding to his despair. Then he heard Tyra's shouting from across the ship. She was pretty good at being loud.
He didn't exactly swallow his fear, but Zulo did take his bow from around his torso and readied an arrow. It appeared his arrows were the only idea to deal with the monster, and he was more than happy to get the thing to stop flailing around. He readied an arrow, realizing the dangers of landing it in a fellow crew member on the other side. He had never been an excellent archer in the first place, and aiming on a rocking ship was new to him. In a panic, he let one fly, and out of all places it landed in a mast in front of his target. He quickly let a couple more go, this time penetrating the monster's scales, but it was still not enough. Finally his winning shot went, whizzing with high speed into the monster's head and to his surprise going in pretty deep. It was enough to finally get the monster to quit flopping, and Zulo slumped down to sit against the side of the ship to catch his breath.

Felix stormed back on deck, huffing. As soon as he had felt the extra weight on the ship and seen how it was seemingly sinking, he had known something was happening, and had ran back. Now, as he saw the mess that was the surface, he was shocked. The giant monster that had been attacking them lay dead on the floor, a few arrows sticking out of his body. Some masts were hurt. It was a miracle that the creature hadn't shattered straight through the hull. A very stricken looking Zulo was standing with the bow in his hand, which meant that it had been him who had slain the beast. Felix walked over to Tyra, continuing to survey the damage. The other crew members were scattered about the ship, some having been flung away by the monster. "So it's dead now?" Felix asked the captain, casually, "There were no leaks that could be found below after thorough inspection, by the way."
