    James listened, taking in every word, keeping them within him to understand what he was being told. The story was painful for Sephira, he could tell. There was so much emotion in her voice, he feared she would break down before his eyes. But she was stronger than that, and she didn't, only kept speaking of her past. As the tale progressed, his own heart changed. The way she described her family and the forest was vivid and heartwarming, but when she talked about finding it all gone his mouth dried. His eyes drifted off, trying to picture the souls of all her Stari brethren, free to soar to the heavens. When she began speaking of Strattus again, he could see in her eyes the cold pain she still felt. His own hands, smooth with the paste, clenched as he heard of what he had done. He thought this must be the most painful part of the story, but it didn't stop there. By the time she spoke of what happened when she died, they were now both on the bed, sitting across from each other. He'd found a pair of glasses and had poured in them some of the wine, for them to hold while she talked. At least he now understood where she'd gone after dying in the desert, what seemed so long ago.
    The way she described the Sheikah made him smile just a little, for it was hard for him to imagine a younger Sephira that asked 'stupid questions.' He kept listening to the tale, feeling now that the worse was yet to come. However, when she began describing Vincent something changed in her tone. Everything she described seemed to belong in a more cheerful story, where the ending had them going off to live together, have some children, and grow old. He didn't even find her admitting to having mated with the man uncomfortable, as he might have in different circumstances. But every word she spoke, her eyes retained the coldness that had been there when she talked of Strattus. But the words weren't cold. There was something else in them, something closer to grief and pain. And when it happened, when she spoke of the betrayal, of how everything had come tumbling down, he could feel a pit form in his stomach. He felt anger and despair all at once, wanting to rip open Vincent's chest himself. But she kept going. And he knew this was the part that had troubled her. The way she had taken their lives, the way her tribe had been avenged. But he knew that Vincent had hurt her in a way that no vengeance could put back together. It took him a few seconds of silence to realize she had finished the story.

    Calmly, he sipped what was left of wine from his glass and set it down on the bed beside him. Then, he removed the chain around his neck, clutching the pendant in his hand. He looked at it, a grey medallion with a phoenix on it. It took him a moment, but he was able to find the way to open it. The eyes looking back at him he recognized, hers looking younger and with a lighter air to them, his the red of the man she had so vividly described. But he closed his eyes, thinking of it in silence, and finally closed the pendant again.

    "Sephira, I..." He was unsure of how to begin. Even those words sounded vague after the silence that had followed her tale. "You are the strongest person I have ever laid eyes on. And...I know telling me all of this may have been harder for you than I can even begin to conceive, but I couldn't be more glad that you did tell me." He looked up at her again, his eyes meeting hers, and he smiled, trying to provide warmth. "When your fire burns, I can feel the heat of many years pushing it. All the time I've known you, I've been trying to understand why. Trying to understand why it is that every look you give me, every time you turn away, every time your skin gets scorching hot, I only want to get closer to you, to hold you. I've wanted all this time to be able to share whatever burden lay on your shoulders, for no one should carry such heavy weight on their own. And most certainly not you, who still has so much potential to live for." He wondered if he should then, worrying that he might not be making any sense at all. Perhaps she had told him this to explain why she would never love him. But it didn't matter. And for some reason, something within him pushed him to retell memories he had long since buried. Some divine force compelling him to show her more of his true nature. Or maybe it was just the wine.

    "I grew up in Kakariko Village. Spent there my whole life, before setting out to adventure. My father...well, he wasn't the type of man I'd want you to meet, so to speak. Seamus Accardo, he was called, and for many years I lived believing that he had been a great knight, a member of the King's Royal Guard." He sighed, with a helpless smile on his lips, staring off at the emptiness in the wall. "He wasn't though. I learned that soon enough. Nothing more than a lowlife that had taken my mother for granted and left her alone, caring for me. He went off, and got killed by other people who carried the same...lifestyle that he did. All this before I even learned to walk. But it mattered not to me. There were worse things he could've done... worse things I did, or stood by and let happen."

    "In all that time, I only ever grew close to one friend. He lived close by. Fernando was, lets say, very excitable. He was the type of fella that would spend all afternoon running around the village, simply trying to catch a butterfly he'd seen. There was even a time when he got lost. His family got the entire village riled up, spending all day and most of the night trying to find him. When he turned up, covered in dirt and grime, his hair sticking to his forehead through inconceivable amounts of sweat and mud, he was holding a puppy." A chuckle escaped James mouth, though it was quiet. "A puppy. Some boys that lived near our houses had taken the puppy and thrown it into a hole they'd spent hours digging. Who does that, you know? Anyways, they were older than us, quite a bit bigger as well. But Fer had seen them do it. He knew he couldn't take them on, but he was definitely going to save that poor creature. He was never the brightest either, though. He jumped in that hole with no one knowing what he was doing. Turned out, the hole was much bigger than he'd anticipated, and now he couldn't get out. He might have had an easy time climbing the dirt walls, except he just couldn't give up on the puppy. So he spent hours, using only one hand, getting out of there. But he did. And he kept the puppy for many years."

    James kept quiet for a few seconds, another sip at re-poured wine, before continuing. "When I began going off alone in the depth of night out to Hyrule Field, I liked to think of myself as a Lone Wolf. You know, seeking out criminals, fighting crime. I taught myself how to use a bow, and when a mentor, a good friend, found me, he instructed me in the art of swords and knives. He gave me those two knives I have, had them made with special care. But, my little adventures were bound to get me into trouble eventually. Except, they didn't hurt only me. On a raid one night, I was trying to spy on some men whom I heard were planning on raiding the village. They were some nasty people, I could tell. Only, I never realized I was being followed. When I heard them bringing out someone from behind a rock, I couldn't do a thing as I realized it was Fer. They brought him to his knees before their leader, and when he couldn't answer their questions they... I..." He closed his eyes momentarily. "I froze. I couldn't muster the strength in my legs to stop what was happening. When his body went limp, I rushed away at full speed and threw up into the river and couldn't stop crying. When his body was found outside the village the next day, I couldn't even bring myself to tell his mother the truth. Not until many years later did I finally do that. Later, after I'd hunted down each and every one of the members of that group and avenged everyone I loved who they had hurt. I can't say it made me glad. It still left a hole in my stomach, a weight on my heart, that I carried thereafter."

    He passed his hand through his messy hair, the memories now fresh in the back of his eyes. "I will never forget them, I see their faces when I sleep. But you... There was something about you, back when I saved you in Hyrule Field the first time we met. Something about the way you talked, acted, the way you looked at me. For the first time in forever, I felt like I could be of use again. Not as the Lone Wolf, but as someone who took care of others, watched out for his friends. Someone who could try to keep love alive in the hearts of others." He looked into her eyes again, the smile back on his lips, his eyes shining. "You helped me that day, more than anyone else could have. And I promised myself that I would help you, if I ever saw you again. And I mean to do that, Sephira Phoenix."

    He took a deep breath. "If you let me, there is nothing I mean to do more. Because you're worth it. Because everyone is worth it."

      James was so much more attentive and sympathetic than she'd expected. In fact, he seemed completely absorbed in her story, to the point where he seemed surprised when she finished. He surprised her further by opening the pendant, revealing the picture inside. She smiled sadly at it, at a time when she'd truly been happy, frozen forever, before he closed it.
      Then he spoke. And the words stunned her. He called her strong. Told her he'd wanted to share her burden since first feeling her burning heat, and thanked her for letting him. Then proceeded to share one of his own.
      She had never thought him to be the type for revenge. Perhaps that was an exaggeration, but she hadn't thought he'd go to that extremity. However, Fer reminded her some of Midnight. Even more of Elwood. And if someone harmed either of them... Just the thought awakened her fire, which she'd managed to cool during both narrations.
      She had helped him. When they'd met, she'd been struggling with her own life, attempting to find a purpose to her own life, he'd discovered one for himself. To help others. To help her. He hadn't even known her, yet he'd resolved to help her. A resolution that he was determined to keep. Everything she'd done, to him and others, he thought she was worth it.
      Words were beyond her. She was touched, and at the same time, felt unworthy. The entire time they'd known each other, ever since she started noticing affections between them, she'd been afraid she didn't deserve him. And now he as telling her she was worth every burn she'd given him, every time she'd yelled or pushed him away. She dropped her gaze to her empty wine glass, surprised to find it was empty. (I am too, actually.)
      "James, I... I don't know what to say. I just..." Her voice trailed away, unsure. She reached over and took James' hand, giving it a gentle squeeze, wincing as she felt the burn cream on it.

        When she took his hand, James looked down at it. It looked weird, for the paste was still acting on his skin. Yet, her temperature was, though still high, soothing. He closed his eyes and sighed gladly. He felt inherently better, not only because a weight had been lifted off his mind, but because he knew Sephira trusting him with her story was a step bigger than any they'd taken before. Looking her in the eye, at a loss for words, he felt the same way he'd done so long ago, back in Hyrule Field. Without thinking anymore about it, he leaned forward, although a bit in an uncomfortable position, and kissed her. He didn't stop kissing her, and while her lips were just as warm as her hands had been, for once it didn't hurt.

          Gerrard was shocked when Jacky leaned forward to kiss him again. All his emotions and all the voices were flung to the side now, replaced by passion. The time melted away like wax melts away from the candle and their hearts beat as one.

          Later that day Gerrard stood on the deck again, his mind preoccupied. The smell of breakfast wafted through the ship and his stomach grumbled with anticipation of the food. He sighed and moved his stiff legs towards the galley. A simple meal of grits and bread as tough as a rock, it tasted bland, but good. It filled Gerrard's stomach, which was obviously what the meal was intended for. He spent the afternoon exploring the ship, as the voices slowly pounded against the shield of his mind and threatened to break through and rush through him again.

            Sephira was froze as James kissed her. Perhaps she should have expected it, but she hadn't. It took her a few moments to recover from her surprise enough to return the gentle kiss. That was all it was, though, a soft kiss, gentle as they snuggled on her bed, allowing the ship to rock them to sleep in each others' arms.

            They woke the following morning to a scratching at the door. Sephira scowled and struggled to disentangle herself from James and blankets, muttering as she moved to open the door. Midnight stood there panting, grinning in the manner he did best. "Where's Elwood?" Sephira asked him a little suspiciously.

              Jackylin woke up bleary-eyed and still a bit sleepy, but she'd gotten enough sleep to be able to get out of bed without falling asleep on deck. She threw back the covers, half expecting something to hold them, but Gerrard was gone from her bed. Jacky just shrugged; it wasn't like he could've gone far, they were on a ship in the middle of the ocean. She picked up her clothes from the floor and tucked them into the bottom of her bag, dressing in fresh clothes. She chased her breakfast with a little water and sat on the deck by the railing, feeling a little sick. She told herself it was just the rockiness of the boat not agreeing with what was in her stomach.

                James rubbed at his eyes half-heartedly before turning around to look at who was at the door, which Sephira had already answered. Seeing Midnight there, he sank back into the pillows, for some reason still tired despite having slept soundly all night. He too wondered where Elwood was, as he hadn't seen him at all the entire day before, but his uneven hair and pasty face were signs enough that'd he'd have to clean up first if he wanted to go find him. He closed his eyes again, despite knowing he wasn't going back to sleep, and stretched on the bed, feeling the ache of all the sore muscles he had used in training the previous evening. He could see the glasses and empty wine bottle on the floor by the bed, where they'd left them the night before, but he didn't even have energy or motivation enough to pick them up.

                ~~~
                Elwood gasped and held his breath as one of the crew members walked past his hiding spot in the shadows of a large crate. He didn't know how far into the ship he'd gone, but he was confident that there was no other level below him. He'd instructed Midnight to go wake up Sephira and James, who would most likely want to be getting something to eat soon as it wasn't that early anymore, and taken advantage of his alone time to exploit something he'd noticed the past days. Two crew members always headed down this way with trays full of the best food the cook had served that day, then emerged back into the surface without the trays. He found it odd, and wanted to see what was going on. An adventure, he liked to think. Suddenly his heart stopped and he felt his voice freeze in his throat when he heard someone say his name.
                "Elwood, is that you young man?" He wasn't sure what to make of it. Should he pretend he hadn't heard? "Come on out, now, it's rude to be sneaking around another man's ship." Now recognizing the man's voice, Elwood slowly trembled out of hiding, looking up to see its owner sitting behind a table screwed to the floor, with a book in his hand and the tray with food set before him. He wasn't sure what to make of it. "What were you doing back there?" Elwood gulped.
                "I...I wanted to see where all the good looking food was going. I'm sorry," he added with a mumble, looking down at his thumbs. Shane laughed warmly and shook his head.
                "Nonsense, you don't need to apologize Elwood. You've done nothing wrong! Why me, sulking down here without inviting my dear guest to the table. Now that's rude!" He shrugged and waved him forward with a smile. "Come, boy, sit with me and share in my food." Elwood hesitated for a second, but the smell of the scrambled eggs and freshly roasted sausages was too much for him and his growling stomach. He eagerly took a sit. Shane nodded at him and waved over the food, inviting the Kokiri to dig in. Nia jingled silently within Elwood's tunic, but the older man didn't notice. Seeing him without his wolf or guardians for once, Shane smiled even wider with a glint in his eye. "What a coincidence this is. In fact, I was just wondering if there is something you could help me out with, Elwood."
                  Midnight paused in his wagging as he considered the question. His tail slowly dropped as he realized the only possible answer was one Sephira would not like. He... He told me to come wake you. James too." He looked up at Sephira meekly. "I just wanted-"
                  "I know, Midnight," Sephira said with a sigh. She reached down and rubbed the wolf's ears. "I'm not mad, I promise. But go back to Elwood and make sure he doesn't get in trouble. And this time, stay with him." Midnight licked her hand and hurried off, his tail upraised once more.
                  She shook her head, then turned back to James. "Seems Elwood's wandered off, and now he's unsupervised. We should go find him before he gets himself in trouble," she said, straightened her rumpled clothing. While she trusted Midnight would find the boy without any troubles, she still wanted to reassure herself that in the time the wolf had been finding his way to her room, Elwood hadn't gotten into trouble of any kind.
                    Hearing Sephira, James took a deep breath and pulled himself from the bed. The strain on his muscles was even more evident standing, but he gave no sign of it. Instead he stretched, tried patting down mats of hair that were pointing in wrong ways, and shook the sleep from his eyes by smoothing out his clothes. Knowing it wasn't gonna get any better than that unless they got to a water source, he looked up and smiled. "Alright, let's find that boy. One small Kokiri in a ship as big as this one? How hard could it possibly be?" he added in a joking manner. Then walked out of the room with Sephira leading the way. He was sure he'd seen Midnight rush off to the left, so he was sure they would start that way as well.
                    ~~~

                    "But I don't understand," Elwood complained with a mouthful of half-chewed food, "won't James and Sephira be mad? And then the others as well?" He frowned at Shane as he continued eating.
                    "Oh no, not at all. Trust me, little one, they will be grateful for it. They might not show it, but they will be. And you would love to be my little helper, wouldn't you? To have some fun and adventures roaming about the ship. After all, things could get a little boring around here. Why not make the game just a tad more fun?" he exclaimed, grinning with joy. Elwood thought about it for a second longer, which made Shane a bit nervous. He could sense someone would come looking for the boy soon enough. Finally, Elwood smiled.
                    "Alright, I'll do it!" he exclaimed throwing his fork in the air. Shane did his best not to reprimand him on it, and just kept a smile on his face.
                    "But you remember what you have to do..."
                    "Every night," Elwood nodded eagerly, "back here. Don't worry, I won't let you down, Cap'n!" Shane smiled, truthfully this time. I know you won't.

                      Midnight paused outside a door, snuffling at the crack below it. He'd followed Elwood's scent here, and he was certain the boy was beyond it. He whined and scratched at it, wondering why Elwood was back there, and why he was with Shane. Midnight hoped nothing bad had happened, or that the boy was in trouble. He'd never be able to go back to Sephira if he'd allowed the Kokiri to get in some form of trouble.

                      Sephira led the way to the deck, thinking maybe Elwood would have gone topside to enjoy some sun. Instead she found Star laying in the middle of the deck, purring quietly as sailors moved around her. Sephira shook her head and went over to the cheetah. "Why must you insist on being in the way?"
                      Star opened an eye to regard the Stari. "I'm not in the way. They all are." Sephira chuckled and patted the cheetah's warm side.

                        James smiled when he saw just how pleased Star looked with herself. "Glad you're feeling better, Star," he told her, knowing full well by now that she understood. Then he looked around and frowned. "I don't think Midnight came up here, Sephira. Do you see him around?"

                        Elwood looked up from his recently emptied plate. He was satisfied and pleased with himself for having been brave enough to come down here, as much as Captain Shane scared him. Though now that he'd talked with the man, he couldn't say he wash half so frightened as he'd been. Hearing scratching and whining at a door back where he'd come into the room from, he quickly stood and hurried over there. He recognized Midnight's noises. He pulled the door opened and smiled at the wolf. "What's going on, boy? Is someone looking for me?" He bent over and scratched behind the wolf's ears, before looking behind him to ask permission to leave. When he saw that Shane was now immersed in a book and not paying him any mind, he mumbled thanks for the food and hurried off with Midnight at his heels. Shane smiled and knew the boy wouldn't fail him.

                          Midnight wagged his tail as he led Elwood away, pleased he'd found the boy quickly. He decided to find Sephira, to show her Elwood was okay and that she didn't need to worry about the pair off them. The wolf snapped his teeth playfully at Elwood, the usual start to a game of tag for the pair.

                          Star looked at James. "Midnight? Last I saw, he was playing with Elwood. They seem to be keeping to themselves."
                          Sephira frowned. "Why would they be doing that? It's a little hard to keep apart on a ship this small."
                          Star laid her head back on the deck and closed her eyes, sighing softly. "Who knows. They're just playing and exploring. If one disappears, the other will find him quick enough."
                          Sephira rolled her eyes and stood. "Star thinks they're just having fun while trying to avoid us more serious people." She grinned at James. "While that's a bit worrisome, it also means they won't be underfoot while we exercise." Her hand went to her sword as a challenge glinted in her eye.

                            James thought on it a moment, only to have a devious smile creep up on his lips. The section of the ship they were in now was clear enough of people, it would make for a nice area to practice in. "Are you sure?" he asked, tauntingly, "I would think you'd still be tired from the beating I gave you last time." His hands went to the grips of his own knives. He'd be ready to jump into action at a moment's notice. He just had to wait for Sephira to make the first move. "I understand if you're not ready to face me again."

                            Elwood had been hurrying through the ship, knowing someone must have been looking for him to send Midnight after him. However, it was a long way back upstairs, and his mind soon wandered. As he began thinking on what might be set for dinner later on, he all but ran into an unsuspecting Gerrard. Rubbing at his forehead where he'd crashed against the man's back, he looked up at him. "Woah, sorry, mister," he groaned as he smiled, "I guess the corridors are too tight to be running through. What are you doing?"

                              Sephira grinned. "I seem to recall getting you pretty good last night. I think you just dreamed beating me." She grinned and drew her sword, summoning fire to make the motion a bit more dramatic, counting on the flare to surprise him enough to lower his guard as she struck. She had discovered the night before how difficult fighting without her magic was, especially when fighting someone who'd had proper training like James. Vincent had been her only teacher, and she'd only learned a little from him before his betrayal. Even then, she used fire to enhance her skills, using it to give her a greater reach and a distraction. Without it, she wasn't on par with James, feeling almost clumsy against his attacks. She hoped they could do these mock battles more often so she could practice and learn. After all, there might come a time when she no longer had her magic, and she wanted to be able to rely on more than just her archery prowess.

                                The flare Sephira summoned was hot and bright, but after the fight the day before James knew to expect it. He parried her attack by holding his knife vertically and swung wide horizontally with the other to push her back. "Dream? No, I only tend to dream about things that aren't possible. Beating you? Eh," he grinned as he jumped forward, swinging the knives horizontally, one from the left, one from the right, aiming low against her sword.
