The Clocktown refugees were all in one big mass, confused and lost. Many had been made a widow or an orphan. It had to be the saddest day in Termina history. Everyone believed all was lost.
Except for Edward Lomeli.
As he made his way through the crowd, he cursed Maxwell in his head. I know you did it, Maxwell. I know you did this. I can't believe you used to be like a brother to me. At least I've come up with a contingency plan.
Edward came out the other side of the crowd and saw a boulder that looked climbable. Perfect.
Zebulon watched Edward climb the rock. Either he's an idiot, or he's thinking the same thing I'm thinking.
"Citizens of Clocktown!" Edward yelled from the boulder, gaining the attention of every person in the crowd. Today, a great tragedy has befallen us. A tyrant, by the name of Maxwell Kal, has killed our friends, neighbors, families, and lovers. In the same day, he has taken away our home, Clocktown. While it may seem all is lost, it is quite the opposite! All of us have managed to escape his oppression, so we can free our fellow citizens trapped inside of Clocktown! I will tell you how we do this!"
First, we pool our resources together! From there, we figure out what we need, and we send our sneakiest people to steal the supplies from Clocktown! Second, all who feel comfortable and capable shall come together and become our small army, which will be our answer to Maxwell's worms who he has put armor on! And finally, we elect representatives who lived in each part of Clocktown, whose powers will include commanding the army and the scavengers, along with any powers they feel necessary.
Now, I realize you may think we will gain control of Clocktown quickly, and we will have no need for all of this. I tell, the self proclaimed king has wealth and power, and knows how to use both, which means we will not regain our home unless the Giants bless us with miracles. I tell you, my friends, we may not take back our home soon, but before I die, I promise you, Maxwell Kal shall be in a coffin!"
When the speech ended, the crowd went crazy. At first, it sounded like chaos, but eventually a chant could be heard. As more people joined the chant, it was clear that they were saying "Death to Kal".
Jacob, who had arrived near the beginning of the speech, felt very uncomfortable as he walked through the crowd. He knew they were talking about his cousin, but it still made it seem like they wanted to kill him. When Jacob got out of the crowd, he saw four people approach him. Those are probably the representatives the guy spoke about in his speech. I guess the people who knew these guys thought of them when they thought of representatives.
Zebulon noticed Jacob a few yards away.
"Great minds think alike, am I right?" Zeb asked, walking over and standing next to Jacob.
Jacob recognized Zeb from earlier. "You again. Anyways, to answer your questions, I think we should wait a little till we put our trust in this guy. I mean, we've read what he wants us to, but is it different from the fine print?"
Zeb shook his head. "I don't think so. I have a knack for identifying shady people, and this guy doesn't fit the description."
Jacob grunted. "If you say so."
Soon, the four people went back to the crowd, and Jacob approached Edward.
"Need something, kid?" Edward asked, trying to guess if Jacob had lost someone in the attack.
"I...I have to tell you something."
"Okay. Just whisper it, if you want.
Jacob checked his surroundings, then made eye contact with Ed.
"I know this might be hard to believe, but...I'm Maxwell's cousin."
A look of disbelief briefly flashed on Ed's face, but then he saw the undeniable family resemblance.
"Okay, listen up if you don't want to get killed. As you know, these people are very mad at Max. If you go around saying that you share the same last name, they will attack you, and if I protect you, they'll think I'm working for him. So just don't say your last name. Say you were a homeless orphan before the attack, and you were never told your last name, and your first name was a name some old man called you. Alright?"
Jacob nodded and walked away. Edward told in front of the boulder for a few more seconds, then walked into the crowd to figure out if the four men who had approached him had been accepted by the people as a representative.
