  • The Last Homely House

The gate creaked open. Its screech reminded Alec of that of a newborn baby at the beginning of a new life. Cremia urged the horse forward, and the carriage's wheels slowly turned after it. As he felt the bumping start once again, Alec held Odin closer to him and closed his eyes, taking deep breaths. The smell of cattle and horses and cuckos and dogs engulfed him. What had started as a small ride to safety had turned into a cruise beckoning all refugees to a safe haven. Not only were him and his family in the carriage, but after it followed hundreds upon hundreds of citizens of Termina that had managed to escape the fires of Clock Town. Cremia, after much convincing and influencing on behalf of Alec, had agreed to take in any refugees willing into her ranch. It was safer for them than staying out in Termina Field with all the creatures and critters that crawled through it. They would settle down in the field, either in tents or sleeping bags. As long as the peace held in the ranch, they would be allowed to stay. After a few more minutes of bumps on the road, the carriage stopped. "We're here!" called Cremia from the front.
Alec smiled at the two kids and the pirate sitting across from him. The two kids and pirate that had turned his life upside down. They pulled the carp away and got off from the vehicle, Alec helping Odin down to make sure that his little legs didn't let him fall. "Follow me," Cremia ordered, not waiting for them as she headed into the larger of the two buildings in front of which they had stopped. Alec turned to make sure the other three were behind him and followed the girl into the house. It looked cozy, nothing too fancy. Compared to his lifestyle the past few years, it was perfect. Cremia's footsteps could be heard going up the stairs, so he went after the noise. As he moved further into the house, a smell of baked goods wafted into his nostrils. The stairs were longer than he'd expected, but soon they were on the second floor. Past a few doors, Cremia stopped. "This will be your room. It isn't very big, but it's all you get. The bathroom is down the hall. If you need me, I'll be outside making sure all those people don't break out into a civil war." Alec thanked her appropriately and waited until her flaming red hair disappeared down the stairs before addressing his family.
"Well, guys, I guess this is it." He slowly turned the doorknob and pushed the door open. The room wasn't anything too special. There was a queen sized bed taking most of the space. Baby blue covers draped it and some pillows were on it. The walls were painted beige and small cow designs decorated the bottom edge. The roof wasn't too high, and the window was closed and rather small, not to mention dirty. However, Alec was thankful for all of it. They had been given a place to stay when they needed it the most, and he wouldn't ask for more. "I guess we should start settling in," he mentioned. As the others went about their business, he walked over to the window. From it he could see everything going on outside. In the distance, smoke could still be seen on the horizon. He pulled the window open, letting the air in, as well as the memories.
He clearly remembered the first time he'd met Widow. They had fought, no surprise there. Almost immediately, they discovered a connection. His mind jumped to those days they'd spent in the fortress with the other pirates, and what an embarrassing experience it'd been for him, yet totally memorable. He loved her more than anything, except the boys, and he would always hold those memories in his heart. She watched her now, still with the same awe with which he'd watched her that first day.
His memories about Jacob were a tad different. His relationship with him has started as a human to human sort of deal, then slowly grown into father to son. Learning of his death, then his revival, were things that he wouldn't forget. The moments when the father and son had become a man and a man. He knew if there was anyone he had to worry about, it would be him getting into trouble. But, Jacob was more responsible that most adults he knew. No matter what, he knew it'd be alright in the end. He was a good boy, after all.
His memories then turned to Odin. It had been him who had caused them the most problems. Simply having to rescue him from his evil parents had taken forever in his mind. He was definitely the most peculiar creature to ever walk, and only the Goddesses knew what other things he would one day lead them into. He treasured his moments with him, and together with Jacob, he knew he couldn't have asked for better children. Even though, he hadn't really asked for children in the first place. He turned to look at all of them. He walked over to Widow, and kissed her firmly on the lips, letting his emotions flow through her. Then he hugged Odin tightly, and then Jacob. For some reason, he felt the need to hug Jacob tighter. "I never thought I'd settle down. I definitely never thought I'd settle down as a refugee either, but still. At least, now that we're here I'm happy we're together." He smiled. An honest but simple smile. Not too big, not too small. A deep smile, with underlying messages hidden in it. Later that night he would realize that that smile hadn't been his smile. It had been theirs.

(Alec, Widow, and Odin now enter a [cryogenic sleep]. During this retirement period, they will remain inactive, but that doesn't mean they are not able to grow. If ever they are awoken, it will be as though time really has passed. As retired characters, they do not count towards their users' total characters count. Jacob, however, remains active. They will be missed.)

A little later, when everyone else was distracted, Jacob found something he could write on, a writing untensil, some ink, and got to work. He wrote for about five minutes, sometimes stopping and thinking about his next words, until he finally finished. When it was done, he reluctantly picked up his sword and left. He didn't like carrying his sword, but it was needed for what he was planning. The message he left read:

    Dear family,
I've decided that I need to deal with Maxwell. He's my cousin, so I feel he is my... responsibility. I'm sure there will be some older people forming a rebellion of some sort, so I'll join them so I don't get myself killed. I want you guys to know that I love you all and meeting you guys was the best thing that ever happened to me. You let me live the life of the boy I was supposed to be. But I feel like I've made some decisions that make me...not a boy. I mean, I'm still very young, but I don't feel like it. I have this strange addiction to...traveling. Some part of me always wants to move and not settle down. It can't be controlled. I can't live the family life. Even if I do survive, even though I'll want to come back....I can't. I've robbed myself of my childhood by making bad decisions I regret, and I always want to move. After I take care of Maxwell, I'll just be a drifter. Going from nation to nation. If there was some kind of way I could capture what I see, I would give those images to the Postman and I would deliver them to you guys. But yet, I do not know of a way to do this. Goodbye. Remember that I'm doing this so you guys can have better lives.

    I'll miss you guys.
    -Love, Jacob.
