Donovan had been leaning against one of the Palace's walls, writing in an old notebook, while the strangers all parted ways. When he was finished writing, he looked up as Kaida abandoned a little deku boy and walked over to a boulder, looking frustrated.
"Uhm, hey Kaida!" Donovan smiled as he walked over to her. He tried to sound like he hadn't heard her get mad at the deku. "What's up?" He sat down on a tree stump near her, gazing up at the grand Deku Palace. "Have you found all your friends you were looking for?"

Kaida gave vent to a sigh of exasperation. "We found Jacob, which is who we came here for first, but apperently he's dead, so his great grandfather took pocession of his body and is going to try reviving him. Then Alec runs in to get Widow, leaving me with Odin. And then the bugger bit me, because I wouldn't let him get in the way!" She slammed her fist into the rock, ignoring the pain. "I probably shouldn't have gotten angry with him like that, but he was in such a temper and I had no clue how to deal with it. With the people trying to hire me, I always respond with anger if they don't like me doing something. It's what they pay me to do, they shouldn't be getting angry at me if they didn't spell it out correctly." She scowled as she realized she was venting in general now, and to a stranger. She snapped her mouth shut.

The Dekus gave a shout of triumph when they saw they’d injured one of the intruders. “Again!” the leader shouted. “Ready…aim…” But he’d hardly had time to utter the next command when he noticed too late a knife flying directly at him. His body fumbled and tripped over itself, unable to process the mixed messages his brain was sending his feet. In the end, the weapon seared straight through his eye, embedding itself firmly in socket and skull as a clear fluid began to immediately spurt forth from his eye.
He screamed. “Get it out!” he roared, clawing madly at his face which only succeeded in making small chips of wood fly everywhere. The Dekus that had previously been standing by his side were now trembling a good several feet away from him, not wanting to get in the way of his rampage. He roared again and with his good eye spotted his spear on the ground. He snatched it up and give it a mighty hurl in his attacker’s general direction, shouting obscenities as he did so. “I’ll get you for this!” he shouted, still clutching at his eye. “You hear me? I will hunt you down to the ends of the world, never stopping until you die by my hands!” He spun around to face the other Dekus. “Fire again!” Another torrent of arrows flew towards the drawbridge.

Odin felt a pang of sadness when he detected the note of anger in Kaida’s voice, and for a moment he was tempted to go back to her and apologize. But he knew he’d feel just as terrible if he didn’t try to help. So he pressed onwards.
He recalled a little passageway he’d made himself when he didn’t want to pass by the front, so he decided to try that. He ran up to the side of the palace and started counting the wooden logs. “One…two…three…” He got to nine and pushed the tenth which easily gave way to reveal the palace’s interior. The space was just enough for him to wiggle through. Once inside, he kicked the wall back into place, making it look like it’d never been disturbed, and started running down the hallway.

widow was running down the hallways, totally lost. she had tackled that deku but he has no information so she settled with dumb luck. as she ran she hoped she would run into odin, unfourantly she literally ran into odin, knocking them both to the ground "oh Odin" she cried, hugging him tightly "are you ok, I'm sorry I didn't mean to run into you"

Alec smiled maliciously, gloating. Well deserved did that Deku have a knife to the eye. It was even entertaining watching him lose control around his guards. Alec sidestepped the lance and by the time the volley flew, he was expecting it. He had moved, slowly but surely, to hide behind a wall. He waited until arrows stopped crashing against the wall before coming out. He was getting close, if he could just disappear into one of the hallways he'd be able to look for Widow in peace. He took a deep breath and began running with a limp towards them. Girlfriend trumps pain. As he neared them he raised his remaining knife threateningly. He didn't mean to kill, just scare and possibly maim.

Behind all the commotion, another man walked forward, helping himself across the grass by way of a black metallic cane. He had seen only the last part of the argument, including the knife to the eye of the Deku leader. With little else to do, the man stopped outside the gates and sat on a rock, standing the cane in front of his body as he pushed a few stray strands of grey and white hair from his face.

"Dekus... As tough as a wooden plank...." He muttered to himself.

"No problem," Donovan chuckled as Kaida suddenly stopped herself from a deeper rant. He looked around. Nobody. Donovan and Kaida seemed to be alone, sitting in the mist. Yet life and beauty was all around--in the trees, in the swamps, just in the air. Exotic birds and frogs chirped from every direction. Then he thought he had heard an interruption to it--a yell, possibly, within the Palace's walls. It was a very faint sound, foggier than the swamps that lay behind Donovan, so he thought it was just his mind or ears playing with him. Ignoring it, he took out his harp and played a little tune that he knew attracted those colorful birds in here. Soon enough a bird with feathers of every color in Termina settled down on his shoulder.
"Wassup dude?" Donovan said as he patted the creature perched beside his head. The bird started tweeting out the melody Donovan was just playing. No time to get all bird-boy, Donovan... He suddenly said to himself within his mind.
Suddenly a man emerged emerged from (the Palace gates? The only way he could have seen the Deku leader get owned is if he was in the Palace before) and sat down on a rock nearby.
"Hey, look," Donovan pointed a finger at the man as his head leaned towards Kaida, whispering. "Sheesh, is there some sort of party going on? Cuz I've seen enough people in this Swamp today to double what I've seen in here in my whole lifetime."

Kaida smiled. Music was a weakness of hers. She normally didn't indulge in it, due to having to sneak around a lot, but she carried a small flute with her for the few times she could. She was tempted to reach pull it from its small pouch in her sword sheathe, but decided against it when the bird landed on Donovan's shoulder. It was a beautiful bird, and unlike any she had ever seen before.
She glanced over at the man Donovan pointed out. She couldn't recall having seen him before. She smiled at Donovan. "If there's a party, I wasn't invited. I'll need to have a talk with the host when I see him," she teased. After all, it was his swamp. Therefore, it must be his party.

Donovan pulled his attention away from that shady man and back to Kaida, chuckling at the joke. He didn't fully understand it, but he didn't fully understand the girl either. She seemed to be a tough adventurer, but she could also joke too. Donovan liked it when a true heart shared a place with strength in a person's soul.
"You've got funk," The words seemed to just slide out of Donovan's mouth. He stood up and looked out at the swamp where they had crossed the purple river before. "I gotta head back. Maybe we can catch your friend somewhere on the way out." He paused, moving his head to look to the left of the swamp. Dense fog and trees lay in the distance beyond a stretch of grass along the Palace's main wall. "I was thinking of taking a new route out. Maybe it would eliminate the risk of a slow, poisoned death. And I need something new." Donovan smiled. An adventure lay ahead of him. He couldn't see anything, it was pretty foggy--metaphorically and literally. No goal, no destination, but he knew he was gonna do something. "You coming?"

Kaida smiled. She wasn't entirely sure what funk was, but it sounded like a good word to be called. At least, she doubted Donovan would be insulting her when they had only recently met. Her breastplate and sword should show she was not a woman to mess with. Even if she keeped having to remind the people she hired not to. She sighed as the thought crossed her mind. Maybe he was insulting her, if he was like all the other guys she had to put up with. She stood. "Sure, that sounds fun. We'll have to find Zarola when we get across, though. I don't want to leave her here alone." Although she doubted the panther would care over much. After all, when they arrived, she was more active and energetic than Kaida had seen her all day.

"You know, it's pretty cool you're raising a panther," Donovan said to Kaida as they reached the large, black cat. "I have never seen one in person before. How long have you had it?"
Donovan looked down at the swamp-forest to his right. That would lead out to Termina Field if you kept going. Forwards held the open area of Woodfall, and probably lots of swimming. But then there was the left. He knew they were pretty much facing the South, away from the Deku Palace, so the left was the East. Didn't lead to any open area that he knew of. No civilization he was pretty sure any Terminian knew of. But someone had to find out. Maybe they had tried, but something horrible prevented them from returning. Or maybe people went and found land that was so much better than Termina they didn't bother coming back. But he found it most likely that nobody had tried. And if nobody tried, nobody would find out. Donovan wanted to find out. That was all his mind was really set on. Maybe it would bring him to the land he was told he was born in, and he might find that Sheikah. Donovan's heart chained him to something over there, and all it was gonna do is pull. Metaphorically speaking.
"We're gonna head that way." Donovan pointed in the unfamiliar direction. "It may be a bit of a detour, but it will be totally worth it." With that, he led the woman and her companion towards the Woods of Mystery. Only now did the name reach his head. He knew how to get through it to reach Kotake's shop, but he ignored going back. his eyes were on the mystery.

"Actually, I've only had her for today. I spotted her at a vender and she looked so beaten and dejected, I just couldn't bear to leave her there," Kaida said. She smiled fondly at the panther, before realizing she was eating a rabbit. "Yuck, you have to eat that so messily?" she said, making a face. Zarola looked up, then returned to tearing into her prey.
Kaida turned to Donovan and flashed him a smile. "Detours mean adventure. Adventure means fun. I get precious little of that these days, so I'm game." Zarola followed them as they went through the woods, licking blood from her face the whole while. Kaida glanced back at her. "I'm going to need to give you a proper bath when we get to a clean stream, aren't I." The panther ignored her. The truth was, Zarola was a mess. Dirt and blood still clung to her coat from when Kaida first bought her, and she had since swamp through swamp water and eaten, rather messily, a rabbit. She could probably be mistaken for a demon.

"Well, animals gotta eat," Donovan looked around and his stomach grumbled. He slid his slingshot out of his pocket and pulled back a deku nut. "And that includes us." He flung the deku nut and it nailed the brown bird he was aiming for out of a tree, the bird plummeted to the ground with a thud. "Don't get me wrong, this is the only time I kill anything. To eat. It's just the life cycle." He walked over and picked up the unconscious bird and quickly cut out a part that made it feel no pain in it's death. He only killed something once a day, or less. But there were two humans here, and hopefully the panther was filled up already. He did feel emotions for animals he killed, but remembered that everyone needed food and it was what made Termina and the world beyond circulate in life.
"Can you help me make a fire?" Donovan asked Kaida. After all his time with her, he could tell that she could get work done, no matter how difficult. "We have to cook this thing and eat. It should fill us both up for the night." Above the swamp trees, the stars were already glittered out upon the deep blue, night sky. "I think I'm gonna get some sleep too..." Donovan cut out all the bad stuff in the bird until he was left with only the meat. Even after doing this for so many years, he still hated every second of it. But it was what kept him alive.

(I thought nuts were too big, and that it was seeds that were used? Or am I just being picky?)

Kaida shrugged. "I don't mind eating meat. But eating it raw, and splattering blood all over? Blech!" She was really being a girl today. Grossing out over the swamp water, then getting squimish over blood? It was true she avoided killing if at all possible, but still. She was a bounty hunter, she was used to blood. She sighed. Whatever was going on, she needed to over with it, soon.
She drew her sword and cut some branches off the tree. Then she sheathed the sword and drew her knife and cut the twigs off them. She stacked them in a pile, then started about lighting a fire. It wasn't difficult, she had made plenty of fires. She learned the trick while living with the pirates, but she grew better at it after long nights on the job. As soon as the fire was light, she grabbed the plucked and gutted bird and spitted it over the flames. She sat back on her hands and looked through the trees at the night sky. Stars twinkled at her and she smiled back.

Donovan sat down on a boulder once the bird was cooking and his eyes couldn't help doing the same as Kaida's had, watching the night sky. No coulds, perfect weather. An exotic bird glided over their little camp, over the trees. Every single land creature on the planet must have thought like Donovan--wishing they were able to fly. They all must have thought of it once. On this starry night, he wanted it more than ever. He wanted to just shoot up into the sky and beyond, living in those stars and looking down at the land. He would be able to see the whole world from up there--everything beyond Termina. He only knew of Termina, and fragments of Hyrule--a town, a castle, a field like the one here, and a desert that connected it with Ikana. Thats what the old Sheikah had told him. She said it was the biggest country in the whole world, but Donovan couldn't picture anything. There must have been other countries in the world too. Donovan felt like he would never see them. He turned his attention to the girl. Conversation was the only thing that could possibly drive out his excitement for the next day--besides food.
"That was quick," Donovan said, rolling a log up to face the fire. "You do this stuff often?" He sat down on the log, and it somehow wasn't soggy and rotten. Maybe it was a sign of drier climate up ahead.
