Elliot twisted himself around in mid-air to see what'd happened to Shane and saw him moaning in pain. For a split second, he felt a twinge of guilt.
Then he remembered that the crazy jerk had tried to slice his head in half.
Just as he landed with a soft thud on the sandy ground, he realized that he'd been right to disregard any feelings of compassion for the man when he saw him abandon his limp and charge him, wildly swinging his sword around. With each oncoming attack, Elliot took a jump back, successfully dodging every lethal blow, until he felt his back hit against something rough. He spared a quick second to look over his shoulder and saw that he'd bumped into a yucca tree. Without another thought, he leaped up and landed on a high branch.

Shane growled as Elliot dodged his blows and jumped up on the tree. He realized he was acting very out-of-character. It was probably because the guy was getting on his nerves. As he studied the tree, he came to a conclusion. Elliot had landed pretty far up. This meant two things. One, it was unlikely that he'd be able to reach him. And, two, his branch was very delicate. He knew trees, and the higher up the weaker the branch. That's the reason why kids only climbed so far. For what he could see, there was no way Elliot was lighter than a kid, so he came down, or he fell down. Either way it couldn't be long. Shane promptly began hacking at the trunk of the tree. This wasn't really in an attempt to bring down the tree, but more to make Elliot feel more pressure. Shane risked a glance up and grinned surreptitiously at Elliot.

As soon as his feet touched the branch, he realized he’d made a terrible mistake. The branch shook underneath his weight, throwing him off balance and nearly causing him to fall, if he hadn’t reached out and grabbed at the trunk of the tree for support. Unfortunately, that action had caused him to drop his sword, and he could only stand by and watch helplessly as his weapon fell and lodged itself into the ground. He barely had time to curse his luck when he felt the branch he stood on shaking again. In fact, it felt like the entire tree was shaking. He looked down to see his adversary hacking away at the tree. He realized, with a sinking feeling, that he would not be getting down from the tree without risking another attack from Shane. Of course, he couldn’t stay up on that branch for much longer, either. What he needed was some kind of distraction. Or at least something to knock the guy out with while he made a quick getaway. He slipped one hand into his pack again, ruffling around for the right item, while his other hand clutched at a branch so he wouldn’t get knocked off balance from all of Shane’s chopping. His hand enclosed around a smooth, curved object, and he pulled it out to reveal a boomerang. Taking aim as best as he could under the circumstances, he threw the weapon at what he hoped would be Shane’s head.

Shane was very entertained by making the tree shake. Suddenly he heard the wind whistling beside him. He looked to see a sword. Elliot's sword he thought. He stopped the hacking for a moment and leaned down to grab it. Just as he did so, something ruffled the hair on the back of his head. He stood up, pulling the sword with him, and looked behind him. Impaled on the crack he had made on the tree was a boomerang. He looked up to see what Elliot was doing and grinned at him. This was his chance. Without another moment to waste, he clutched the boomerang, pulled it from the tree and threw it straight at Elliot. A second later he also gathered his strength, twirled, and send Elliot's sword zipping through the air in the direction of Elliot's head with the blade coming in first. Immediately he started hacking again. With the tree attacks combined, Elliot wasn't remaining on the tree much longer. Don't dodge the boomerang, get knocked out of the tree. Dodge the boomerang but not the sword, die. Dodge the boomerang and move even more to dodge the sword, fall off the tree from the hacking. Shane grinned.

Elliot internally winced as he saw that his miscalculated throw had caused his boomerang to zip right past Shane, make a u-turn, and embed itself into the trunk of the tree. Right. He supposed he should've realized that his opponent would be bending down to grab his sword. He blamed his head injuries.
When Shane tugged the boomerang free from the tree, he readied himself for an attack he knew would be coming. He foresaw the boomerang; he hadn't predicted the sword throw. He dodged right to narrowly avoid face-to-sword contact and just barely had enough time to grab his boomerang mid-spin before tumbling down to the ground. He landed hard on his back, sending a sharp wave of pain throughout his entire body. He found himself unable to breathe and feared paralyzation. Then his breath slowly came back to him in small wisps, and he sluggishly pushed himself up to a sitting position. With the feeling of numbness still lingering in his limbs, it was hard to tell whether he'd broken anything. He knew his sword was somewhere behind him as well, but he was in no condition to be making a run for his weapon. At least he'd managed to hold onto his boomerang.

Shane walked towards the place where Elliot had fallen. He could've simply dashed for the other guy's sword and finished the battle, but that'd be boring. Not to mention disgraceful. As he got closer and closer to the man, his mind began wandering places it normally didn't. Did this guy have a family? What would him dying do to it? Who was this guy? He shook the thoughts. It didn't matter either way, he was going to win. Finally he was close enough for an attack, and he wondered how to proceed. Finally, he spoke. "Nice landing, sure made for an interesting tactic," he laughed. Then he got a bit closer. "Get up. I want to be at your eye level when I win." Without further thought he aimed a kick straight at Elliot's stomach.

The powerfully placed kick knocked the breath out of him again, and he went sprawling back even further. He barely had any energy left to crawl back up, but somehow, he managed to get back up on his feet. He wasn’t giving up yet. He was going to fight with every ounce of willpower he had left.
He hurled his boomerang, which went closer and closer to Shane, but instead of hitting him, it sailed above and past him towards the tree’s branches that hung over them. Elliot fell back so he was leaning on his hands behind him and sighed.

Shane watched the boomerang fly overhead and hit the tree behind him. He gave a little laugh at his opponent's attempt. Suddenly he heard something crack above him. It seemed the boomerang hitting its trunk was the last drop. The tree had suffered through Elliot's weight, plus Shane's hacking, so now branches fell like a rain on Shane. He quickly jumped and rolled out of the way, feeling the hit of some branches on his back. He growled at Elliot, who was innocently laying back where he had been before. Shane charged the man on the ground, jumped over him at the last second, and slashed at him from the other side.

The blow came fast and hard, not giving him so much as a second to move out of the way. He felt the sword slice through his back and he couldn’t help himself—he cried out in pain, falling forward again and gripping at the bloodied ground beneath him. That cut had been deep, and he could already feel the blood pouring forth from the wound. He knew he wouldn’t be able to last for much longer if he didn’t do something, and fast. There’d be no standing up for him this time. He was much too drained. He held up a hand, as if to say “time out” and said, “W-wait…wait a minute…Before you kill me…Will you tell me…how are you doing that?”

Shane stopped and frowned. In the back of his head something told him this was obviously a tactic to survive on behalf of Elliot. However, seeing the dying man weak on the ground, he decided it'd be more interesting to let him talk. "How am I doing what? How I am ruffling your cucco feathers or how I am being such a powerful person?" He allowed himself to hold down his sword and smile. In his mind he began wondering why he was talking with a target, for he had killed many a men before. Men with families. Men with futures. He had enjoyed killing each one.

"I can see you are a...very powerful being indeed. But how?" He gulped down what tasted like blood filling his mouth. He averted his eyes from Shanes and slightly bowed his head, as if showing a sign of submission. Clutching at his sides, he pushed himself to continue. "I think I've heard of beings such as yourself. Beings that wield much power. And I know that you are strong in strength. Is this...is this true with magic as well?" He had to ask because he didn't recall seeing the man use any sort of magic.

Even if he didn't know the man, it pleased him to hear the compliments; although they may not have been compliments per say, just facts. He smiled slowly and got closer to Elliot so that he didn't have to speak so loudly. Crouching, he got on eye level with the dying man. "There are many things you don't understand, Elliot Kastaga," he said, now recalling Elliot's full name from the signups to the Arena. "Yes, I am a strong. Yes, I wield magic, although it is not completely true I have used it in our fight. But no, you have not heard of beings such as myself. I am different. Human yet not human. I used to be feared by many, but I took up a quiet life instead. Still, I kill when I please and I enjoy it. You might call me a monster, but I am no such thing. I'm...a shadow." He grinned evilly. As for how I am what I am, you can ask up in heaven when you get there." He pulled himself back onto his feet and spoke one last time. "Get up, like a real man, and fight."

Pushing back the pain, Elliot slowly stood up, eyeing Shane. "Aha. So you do know a thing or two about magic. And yet..." He raised a brow, the edge of his lip slightly curling up. "...Here I stand, before you. Alive." He took a small step closer without breaking the flow of his speech. "So I'm willing to wager that you're not much of a conjurer. And if that's the case, it must be such a shame for you, knowing that you'll always be second best. Because as strong as you physically are, you'd be no match for a person skilled in the arts of magic. I would know. I've seen some pretty amazing magic." He gave an amused smile, his words sounding light and almost teasing. "Do you even know how to conjure up fire? Like...say that bush over there." He pointed to a small bush not too far off from where Shane was. "How much would it take out of you to light it?"

Shane grew weary with Elliot coming closer. His words stung a little, but not really since it wasn't true he was no match for a person skilled in the arts of magic. He began doing something he loved, which was analyzing the situation. He wasn't sure if Elliot was trying to distract him, get him angry, or simply wanted to waste time so that his shameful self could live for a little longer. None of those situations favored Shane, however, and he was losing his patience with the guy. He feigned as if he actually seemed affected by his comments. "Second best? How dare you insult me. I'll teach you something about magic. Where is that bush you dare challenge me with?" he said while turning his head only a little so that he could keep an eye on Elliot. "Oh! You mean that small thing? You ask me what it would take to ignite that? Well that's easy! All it takes is..." Fast as lightning he swiftly twirled to be right in front of Elliot. He also drew his sword and pointed it at the guy's stomach with one hand, grabbing Elliot by the collar with the other. He pulled him close to his face, all in the matter of two seconds, and his voice changed into a low, raspy, demonic tone. "Your soul," he whispered. His eyes glowed maliciously.

Error! Error! Abort! Elliot's mind immediately went into panic mood when he found himself face to face--not to mention stomach to sword--with Shane all in the blink of an eye. This guy was definitely smarter than he looked and would not be falling for any of his tricks any time soon. He screamed and shouted, struggling in his grasp and doing everything in his power to break free. And in his panic, he did what most anyone would've done in his situation.
He kneed him right in the family heirloom.
