(Not entirely happy with the title, so if you think of a better one, please let me know.)
This is a story that I've been toying with the last few days, and I've finally decided to post it. The creatures described are from my Imogene stories; however, this story is not in Imogene. I will do my best to describe the creatures fully, but please let me know if anything is confusing or abstract.
Chapter One
Joshua tore down the street, dodging hoverboarders, cars, and the many pedestrians. Glancing behind him, he saw the Wralien chasing him was being held up as the traffic light turned green. He laughed as her mismatched gold and blue eyes glared at him from between passing cars. "Can't catch me!" he yelled back at her. She snarled in response.
He ducked around a corner and took several turns until he was certain he had lost her. He then procceeded to the outdoor market. He loved hanging out there, watching the people and their Creatures shopping. He especially liked watching the latter when their owners didn't come, as it gave him a chance to practice his sigils. You see, each Creature wore a collar bearing the crest of its owner's family. The collars came in a variety of styles, so to guess who specifically each Creature belonged to, you had to know the owner's personal style.
"That's Lord Vladimir's," Joshua muttered as he saw a Warlf, a humanoid Creature with the features of a wolf, wearing a collar bearing the bronze and green oak crest. "And there's Duchess Citine's" The dark blue and violet flowers borne by a humanoid Creature with cheetah features called Chetara. Warlves and Chetaras are Creatures usually seen in the market, being the least likely to try running away. Sometimes he saw a Volar or Loboscura, which were basically winged forms of the Chetaras and Warlves. However, he almost never saw a Wralien. This is because they were used as soldiers and guards, due to their savagery.
Joshua frowned as he spotted a Wralien across the market. What was it doing here? Then he noticed its eyes and realized it was the one chasing him. Quickly he ducked through the crowds, grateful for his small stature, and dashed into a side-street. He took several more turns before slowing, certain he had lost her this time.
In fact, he had lost himself. He didn't recognize this part of the city. The buildings were closer together, blocking most of the sun, and decorated with graffiti. Some of the designs made him particularily uneasy as he walked along. He eyed the shadows warily as he carefully made his way down the alley.
"You look lost, boy."
Joshua jumped and, whirling around, found himself facing a black Volar. The Creature towered over him, its dark green eyes smiling at him in a way that made more uneasy. "N-no, I-I'm fine."
It bent over until its face was level with his. "Really? Because you smell..." It paused and inhaled deeply, then smiled as it finished, "Rich."
Joshua frowned. "What's that have to do with me being lost?"
"Simple. Rich people don't come here, and rich kids like you stay with your parents. Where you're safe." It reached out, grabbing his chin with thumb and forefinger. Its grin turned malicious as he tried to squirm away. "Yes, I think you'll make me a lot of money."
Abruptly, it let go as something slammed into it. It reeled, extending its feathery wings to balance itself. A Wralien stood between it and Joshua, its scorpion-like tail pointing the curved knife at its tip at the Volar. Joshua frowned as he noticed the Wralien's cleaming black scales and course black fur seemed so much cleaner than the Volar's fur and feathers. "No one touches him while I'm around," she growled.
The Volar snarled, but retreated into the shadows, not wanting to try fighting a Wralien. Joshua breathed a sigh of relief. "Thanks, Moonscar."
She turned on him, eyes narrowed dangerously. "Don't run from me again, boy. A nine-year-old prince shouldn't be running around on his own."
He drew himself to his full height, which wasn't much more than hers. "I'm older than you; by rights, I should be the one keeping you safe."
"I might be two years younger, but I'm a Wralien, with talents you'll never have." She jabbed at the thing gold collar around her neck, with the Royal family, hawk-shaped crest engraved in rich purple on it. "Besides, I'm a Creature. Our job is to serve humans, not be served. Now come on, we need to get back to the palace before someone decides to try their luck against me."
