    States Petition to Secede From Union

    So while creeping tumblr I saw an article about some US states seceding from the union due to Obama's recent reelection.

    Knowing myself, I posted it right away, and now I'm gonna go read it.

    Blender, stay relevant. As for the petitions, they're petitions from the states to President Obama for him to CONSIDER letting them leave. However, each state needs at least 25,000 signatures for the petition to even be considered. Until that requirement is met, they're stuck.

      I thought they made it unconstitutional for a state to cede, after the Civil War. Maybe I'm just remembering my history wrong.

        Using the founding documents of the American Soveriegnty, any state is allowed to make a list of grievances against it's government and is allowed under the Founding Father's rights to abolish such tyranny and to overthrow a government they feel is unsuited to lead them to maintain their Liberty and Freedom. If it has become unlawful for a state to petition it's government and is following the rules of conduct outlined in the American Declaration of Independence, then the American Federal Government shall be deemed as the unlawful body of leadership, and should, therefore, be overthrown by the people and a new government should be appointed and administered by whom the people feel fit to lead.

          Huh. I thought, according to my history classes, that Texas was the only state that could legally secede, because it was its own country before joining the US, and it came into the US under treaty after the Mexican War. I dunno.

          Also like to point out, that's the Declaration of Independce, not the Constitution. Not sure if that makes a difference, but thought I'd throw it out there.

            Although the Constitution is revered as an equal or higher authority, any American philosophy research counts the Declaration of Independence as an equal document to consider and use as well. And as for Texas, that would apply to ANY of the states outside of the original 13 colonies. And if I'm not mistaken, didn't we ratify Texas without the care of the Mexican-American War?

              Not entirely sure what you mean, but Texas is the only state that was its own country for a while. I believe the others were considered colonies before they joined, while Texas was a country for a year, although if I remember my history correctly, they asked to join the Union right after the Mexican War, but were rejected until Maine asked to be recognize as a state, because of the balance of free and slave states in Congress.

                If you want to be real technical, the west coast and American southwest were Native American country. And even before the white man was here, this was all land of the Natives.

                  Huh, I thought something like this might happen. I'm not really sure how to think about it though... I mean, if they succeeded, it would be great for all the Texans who dislike Obama, and they would have a chance to prove the country wrong, but no good for the people who do. The ones who do like the president could just move out of Texas, but if they can't afford that or something, they'll probably try to fight it. And I don't think anyone wants a fight like that within America. Although, if Obama really can choose if they secede or not, I'm guessing he wouldn't let them. But if he got a ton of petitions maybe he would.

                    Well as of my check last night, most of the Southeastern states from Texas to Georgia and Florida, all have 25,000 signatures which meets the requirements. If I was Obama, I'd make another executive order to release more control back to the states and slightly decentralize the Federal government to a point. Not to mention all 50 states now have a petition. But by the sounds, the people are tired of the government sticking their nose into the affairs of the state.

                      For the first time ever I am proud of my state for something, we petitioned to secede. Doubt the government will take it very seriously though.

                        While this was starting, Obama agreed to let any state do what it wished should the petition reach the required amount of signatures. Now I've been so far out of the loop Ibam unsure

                          I feel like Obama might be avoiding it... I mean, there's a response to the White House beer recipe (is that even a petition?) but not this and it's passed 100,000. And also from looking at the site, he doesn't answer the petitions but other White House workers do, and I think he's the only one who could answer this and that would happen on television and not the white house site. Of course, he must have other things to focus on, being President and all...
