  • A Long Way From Home

The skies were cloudy, but it wasn't going to rain. A few bugs were buzzing not too far from where she sat. The soft wind moved the grass to and fro, and Esmeralda closed her eyes to let it all sink in. She was lying on the ground, resting her head against the wall of the bridge with a book open on her lap. She had come here to meet with any female travelers that might want to join with her in her yet-to-be-started adventures. It had been three days since then, and none had come.
Eating nothing but soft rocks she had kept in her pack during all these time, the good weather was the only thing keeping her from tyrant mode. She couldn't believe in three days not a single adventurer had passed by. Not even those hot-headed males she knew existed all too well. It was in her knowledge that something bad had happened in Castle Town not too long ago, but was that really enough to cause this? She picked up her book where she left off and continued reading, hoping that someone, anyone, would come and talk with her soon.

Calder strolled along the path. He had taken the wrong path from Zora's Domain to Kakariko Village. Well, not the wrong path, but certainly the long one. It was a bit of a nuscience, as he had to refresh his scales with water from his waterskin instead of from the river like he normally did. It wasn't that big a pain, he had become accustomed to having to bathe his scales once a day since leaving the Domain. It was just annoying that he had to use his waterskin to do it. Oh well, maybe he'd get lucky and it would rain.
He paused as a rock ahead of him moved slightly. It was a rather large one, but he had simply ignored it as another rock. Now as it moved slightly, it gained his attention. He watched it for a little longer, waiting to see if it'd move again. When it did, he smiled as he also heard a page turn. He walked up to it. "Hello there, young Goron. How are you this grey afternoon?"

Esmeralda looked up to see who was talking to her. Much to her surprise it turned out to be not only a zora, but a male zora. She squinted her eyes at the traveler. It was true she had asked for someone to come, but why did it have to be a male zora? Either way, she was determined to make the most of it. Closing the book she was reading, she stood quickly and brushed back her hair with her hand. "Hello there, Zora, I am well for a day with no Sun. What brings someone like you to these parts of the world?" She really was curious, as they usually didn't wander too far from the river.

Calder shrugged. "I'm on my way to Kakariko Village. They tend to have the ingrediants I need for my medicines, unlike Castle Town or Zora's Domain. I was going to take the river, but as you can see, I made a wrong turn and ended up going through the mountain path." He sighed. "If I had known I was going to be taking the wrong way, I would have grabbed more water. Then again, if I had known, I would have paid attention and gone the right way instead." He chuckled, then smiled at the Goron, close-lipped as always. "What about you? Why are you away from your kinsmen's mines?"

The question brought back unpleasant memories but she quickly regained her composure. "I decided to do some traveling and see the world. I was hoping there was more to Hyrule than just coal and lava," she half-lied. The fact that the traveler had taken a wrong route showed he wasn't very smart, and she wasn't about to open up to a less-than-smart stranger. Something about what he had said did interest her, however. "Your medicines? Are you sick or something?"

Calder shook his head, smiling. "No, although some of my kinsmen believe I am. No, I'm a travelling doctor. It can be a difficult job at times, especially if whoever I'm treating won't be cured. But the Goddesses granted me these gifts and I am to use them the best way I can." He adopted a lofty expression. "Sometimes I forget how important what I do is and get lost in whatever thoughts I am having. Some think I'm sick in the mind because of it. What can I say? I've always been incredibly relaxed about life in general. If I can save a life, then I will. If the person I am caring for dies, that is the Goddesses' will, and I can't hope to compete with such divine beings." He grinned at the thought of him trying to convince the Goddesses to change their minds, and forgot to keep his lips closed, thus exposing his sharply pointed teeth.

Esmeralda looked surprised. She hadn't expected the Zora to be a doctor. Clearly you had to be smart enough to heal people to be a doctor. Suddenly she was liking this guy more than before. Before she could say anything she saw Calder's teeth and gaped. She wasn't personally familiar with zoras, but from what she had read in her books they didn't usually have shark-like teeth. Not that there was anything wrong with it, though, she thought. The teeth made him different from the rest. She was different from the rest. Maybe they could actually become friends or something... eventually. She gave him a small, regular smile. This was her symbol for "you passed the first test". "Nice teeth," she joked.

Calder slapped a hand over his mouth, blushing as much as any Zora can. "Sorry," he said, his voice muffled by his hand. "I sometimes forget." He missed the joking tone in the Goron's voice, but it didn't really matter to him. Most people found his sharp teeth unusual and fearful. He had made it a point to keep them hidden, especially if he was treating a patient. Zoras usually had pointed teeth, but usually not as pointed as his. He had always been different because of them, and he was a little sensative to teasing because of them.

Esmeralda frowned. Apparently Calder wasn't too happy with her teeth. She rolled her eyes, shook her head, and waved her hand dismissing what had just happened. Coming to the hard part of this conversation, she decided to get to the point as straightforward as possible. "Hey, do you think there's anything you'd need a smart goron's help with on the way to Kakariko?" She didn't exactly know why she'd want to go to Kakariko, it being so close to the mountain and everything, but maybe they'd get sidetracked on the way and end up doing something that was more fun.

                    ("his" teeth. :P)

Calder pursed his lips thoughtfully, pleased they were away from the subject of his teeth. "Maybe not on the way to," he answered, "But while we're there, maybe you could help me decide what medicines would work best. Nobody really knows what medicines work, and which ones are really poisonous. I do my best, but there are times when I have to guess. A smart young lady such as yourself might be able to help me in that area. After all, two brains are always better than one." He grinned, opening his lips but keeping his teeth hidden still.

Esmeralda nodded slowly, remembering the book or two she had read on herbs and their uses. She noticed the zora whose name she still didn't know made sure not to show his teeth again. He thought it peculiar, but didn't comment on it. "That sounds fair enough. I'm sure I'd be of assistance," she stated and gathered her things. "Are you ready or what?"

Calder laughed. "An interesting question," he said. "I have never heard one like that before. Is it common for Gorons to use such interesting phrases?" He started off towards Kakariko Village, then realized he hadn't introduced himself. "Oh my. I seem to have forgotten my manners." He paused and bowed deeply to the Goron. "My name is Calder. Please excuse my rudeness. Too much time in the sun, you see."

Esmeralda nodded in acknowledgement. "I see. Well, Calder, shall we?" she ushered. Before continuing she wondered if it'd be OK to tell him her name. He seemed like a nice guy, not particularly crazy. Maybe... "Oh um," she stopped, "I am Es...peranza. Name's Esperanza. Pleased to make your acquaintance." Not yet, she thought. Perhaps when they got to know each other a bit more, she'd tell him her real name. But not now.

Calder frowned slightly as he heard the hesitation. It seemed the young Goron was wanting to hide something. He smiled. She was probably just playing around, having fun trying a new identity. He liked doing that sort of thing at times. It just wasn't something he did very frequently. "Esperanza is a very unique name. Does it have a special meaning to it? My own name is rather plain. It means 'Stream'. My parents were drunk when they named me, I think." He chuckled.

Esmeralda raised an eyebrow as she walked. "Stream, huh?" she chuckled, "That doesn't sound too bad, I think." She kept walking a bit more before answering his question. "It means Hope." She took a deep breath and looked at him. "It's as though my parents wanted to give me some with the suck-y life I'd had." She continued walking without continuing.
