  • Through the Hamlet...

Esmeralda trod through the entrance to the village. It seemed only yesterday when she had happily rolled out, far away from the mountain and far away from home. Looking around, not much had changed. The building were as dusty as ever, doors creaking as people pushed and pulled them continually open and close. Dirt crunched under her feet as she slowly made her way forward. The quiet noises like those of a forest waking up showed her people were probably deeper in than just the entrance. The whistle of wind that blew by her brought with it smells of juicy pork smoking on an oven and spicy pasta sizzling away in pots filled with water. Of course, liking to cook as she did the smells interested her. But sadly, she didn't possess a house where she could be received and rest with a full goron stomach, so she turned to Calder. "Where did you wanna go first?" she inquired.

Calder looked around, his arm fins twitching a bit as he examained his surroundings. Kakariko Village never changed much, but he loved taking it in. Its deserty atmosphere was so different from his birthplace, he couldn't help but be impressed by it every time he entered. He glanced side-ways at the Malo Mart, then set his features determinedly. "I'd like to find the hot springs first. I need to rejuvinate my scales, and hot water does that just as well as cool." He started to lead the way.

Esmeralda watched for a moment as her companion made his way in the opposite direction to the springs. She waited to see if he realized that and, when he didn't, she sighed and got closer to him to tell him. Then she stopped. Truth be told, a zora out of the water really did slow things down. Maybe if she could just speed things up...
Without a second thought she jumped behind him and managed a well placed blow to the back of his head. She made sure to hold him before he hit himself on the ground as his body crumpled. She had made sure to be hard enough to knock him out, but not enough to do any damage. She took him on her shoulders. Although he was quite heavier than she had expected, being a goron it didn't take her more than a couple of tries to carry him. It'd be faster if she could tie him and roll, pulling him along, but that might injure him. So instead she ran quickly up the road that led to the springs.

Calder frowned. Something didn't seem right. Had he taken a wrong turn again? He always seemed to be doing that. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain on the back of his head. He had only a brief moment to feel pain and surprise before he blacked out.

When he came to, Calder was surprised to find himself in toasty warm waters. He groaned as he sat up, his head sore from the sudden pain of being knocked unconscious. He glanced around, trying to figure out where he was. Still in Kakariko. Looked like the roof of the inn. The hot springs, he realized, and felt like hitting himself for not realizing earlier. He couldn't believe he had forgotten the feel of hot warm over his scales and the shifting sand beneath him, combined with the dry atmosphere of Kakariko Village. "Oh Nayru, I wish you hadn't skipped my egg when you were gifting your wisdom," he murmured. Things would have been much easier if she hadn't. But then, if she had, he wouldn't have left Zora's Domain. He wouldn't have gotten lost so many times and met so many interesting people. He liked getting lost, if it meant he could meet new people.
Speaking of which, where was Esperanza? He looked around, trying to find the Goron. He saw a few male ones lounging in the water, watching him with obvious interest. After all, he was a Zora, and an unusual one at that. Gorons would treat him with interest. He smiled and nodded his head to them. "Hello there," he said pleasantly.

Esmeralda walked up close to them from behind Calder. She giggled like a little girl. "Gosh, zora, what are you doing?" she spoke. She sat down beside him, not entering the spring herself. "Sorry about that, but I thought it'd be faster to get you here myself. Although I never realized it might take you longer to wake up. You really are a heavy sleeper huh?" She looked at the sky, noticing how much the Sun had advanced since they'd gotten to the village. "How much more do you need to 'rejuvenate' your scales, zora?"
The gorons nearby whispered with each other rapidly, not wanting Esmeralda to hear what they were saying.

Calder nodded at Esperanza. "Indeed, I like my beauty rest. Although who knows if it actually helps with my appearances." He sat up straighter and started picking at a few loose scales. Once he had removed them, he scrubbed the rest of his body to make sure there weren't any other ones. When he finished, he stood. "That's all, thank you, Esperanza." He bowed to the other gorons. "Thank you for your company," he said, then turned and made his way from the springs and down to the market. He glanced at his female companion. "Would I be mistaken in assuming that you are unwelcome among your brethren?" he asked softly.

As Calder walked away Esmeralda turned to the Gorons and threw them a fierce deathly glance, bringing them to hush instantaneously. She followed the zora. She pondered his question. A cold silence lay between them as they walked. Finally, she responded. "You wouldn't be mistaken, but it's not that I'm not welcome." She said no more, and kept walking. She wasn't sure where Calder was going, but she decided to follow him without asking.

Calder raised an eyebrow. He was tempted to ask her to explain, but he doubted she would take kindly to his intrusion. It was her story, after. If she wanted to tell it, she would when she was ready. So instead, he simply nodded his head in his carefree-yet-thoughtful manner. "That is a shame, to be unwanted by your own kind. But I suppose it's better to find those who will accept you than to try winning the appreciation of those who dislike you." He bobbed his head, as if agreeing with himself, then asked, "Did I tell you which herbs it was that I needed? I can't seem to recall, so I might just have to buy some of everything."

Esmeralda nodded thoughtfully at the Zora's comment, but was glad he hadn't asked to know more. Out of nowhere, a headache started up behind her eyes, pounding at her sanity, and not even the fresh air could clear it from her mind. Abruptly realizing Calder had asked her a question, she stuttered, "Eh... um well I don't really recall. I don't believe you told me." She wasn't sure about what she had said. Perhaps Calder had told her, but at the moment her mind was too turbulent to try to search for any piece of information within it. He waited to see where Calder wanted to go next.

Calder sighed. "Of course I didn't. Silly me, thinking I'd remember. Oh well, I'll just get some of everything. Thyme, rosemary, dillweed, ginger root..." He trailed off, frowning. "Dear me, those arn't medical herbs. Those are what I use to make my favorite salmon seasoning." He patted his belly as it gurgled. "I must be hungry," he chuckled.

Esmeralda smiled slightly and then took a deep breath as she felt her own stomach communicating with her. She looked around and spotted a small place where it seemed like they could get some food. Probably not rocks or anything much to her liking, but it seemed like it was a good place for Calder to eat. She'd cook something up for herself later. She turned back to him, "Come on, let's go get you some food. We can continue looking for your herbs afterwards. It's never a good idea to work on an empty stomach."

"So young and yet so wise," Calder replied, bobbing his head in acquiescence. "Lead on, fair maiden. Few things doth sooth the savage beast as food does." He chuckled. "And few things are more savage than an empty belly, is it not so?" He followed behind the Goron, pursing his lips as he considered deep thoughts. "Kakariko doesn't have as delightful a selection as a place like Castle Town, where water is plentiful. I will have to settle for something dried or served in a stew. Or should I not get seafood? Fish or not fish, that is the question."

A smile tickled the corners of Esmeralda's mouth. She had given Calder a chance to prove himself worthy, and so far he was doing better than expected. "Come on fishboy, it's not far. and hey," she said, turning to look at him, "Gorons eat rocks all the times, so they're technically eating themselves." She chuckled and kept walking, yelling back at him, "Nothing wrong with that I say! So let's get some fish." As they passed an alley on their way to the food place, she felt an eerie tingling in her spine. She looked at the alley but couldn't see anything. Shrugging it off, she kept walking.

Anadia entered Kakariko. Her journey from Lake Hylia had been a long one, however well worth the first step on my journey she thought to herself. She was amazed by the sights the town had. There were so many people compared to Lake Hylia, in which only a hand full lived, or even visited. As she explored she noticed an empty feeling in her stomach. "Great," Anadia mumbled to herself, "it's lunch time and my dad isn't here.... I have no idea how to cook.... Maybe there is somewhere where they cook food for you." As she walked she found the answer; a small cafe-like place was standing in front of her.

Calder gave her a wide-eyed look of surprise. "Gorons practice cannibalism?" Then he frowned, thinking. "I suppose Zoras do as well, don't we. Eating fish when we are fish." He brightened. "Two races that eat their own and think nothing of it. How unique. We had best not tell the Hylians, though. They will think us atrocious." He chuckled, picking up his pace to match Esperanza.
The cafe, when they arrived, was small, but clean. It was brightly light by windows, with candles brightening some of the tables further back. The waitress who took them to their table was a sweet young woman, a bit shy, but very quickly warmed up to the pair when Calder made one of his "philosophical" comments. She brought Calder some fish, although as he had expected, it wasn't as good as he was used to. Still, he complemented her on it, feeling that since it was new recipe, he shouldn't judge it based on past experiences.
