  • The Svende Farm

Avalona led the sheep over to thier pen and ushered them inside. She turned to smile at Elliot and Midnight. "Welcome to Svende Farm. Come on, I'll introduce you to Boss." She went over to the barn and stuck her head inside. "Hey Boss, I'm back. Can you come out for a bit? I want you to meet my new friends."
A short, sturdily-built man came out of the barn, wiping his hands on a towel. He looked Elliot and Midnight over. "What's yer name, lad?"

"Elliot, sir," he responded with a polite smile, offering his hand to the man before him. "And this is Midnight," he said, motioning to the wolf who stood alert on all fours, carefully examining the man. "He belongs to a friend of mine. I hope you don't mind him being here."

The man gripped his hand firmly. "The name's Dante." He released Elliot's hand. "Any friend of Ava is a friend of ours."
Avalona smiled. "I invited him over for dinner, Boss." Just then, a bell rang out. Dante chuckled. "Then ye couldn't've timed yer arrival better. You three go ahead on in, an' I'll be there in a few minutes."

"Thank you," Elliot said while trying to discreetly flex his squeezed hand. "Dinner sounds good right about now." If everyone here was as pleasant as these two, he definitely wouldn't mind spending the evening with them. Especially if it'd help take his mind off of...
He shook his head and waited patiently for Avalona to lead the way to wherever dinner would be served.

Avalona grinned up at him. "Come on!" She raced off towards the main house, giggling. Dante smiled, shaking his head. "That lass... Ye'd never know the hell she lived through, lookin' at her now."

Elliot was about to race after her, not being able to help himself from getting swept up in all of her excitement, when Dante's words made him pause in his tracks and turn around again. "What do you mean by that, sir?" he asked in a concerned tone. Midnight waited a ways from him, thumping his tail against the ground and seemingly eager to get to the food.

Dante looked at him. "So she hasn't told you." He sighed. "My wife found her half-dead on the side of the road seven years ago. She was covered in blood and bruises. She hasn't told us much, but we do know that she was abused badly, and that whoever it was she was living with before us tried to kill her. But much more than that, she won't say."

Elliot just stood there for a moment with his mouth open and his eyes staring in shock. That definitely wasn't the answer he'd been expecting to hear. What kind of disgusting person would even think about hurting an innocent young girl? To him, that was just cowardly and the lowest of the low. "Wow..." he finally managed to say. "That's..." He shook his head and sighed, unable to finish the sentence. "She must be really strong to have gone through something like that and survive." He glanced in Avalona's direction. "And still be able to put on a smile, too."

                  Dante nodded. "She's strong, alright."
Avalona stuck her head out the front door. "Elliot! Boss! Mrs. Boss says to hurry up before the food gets cold!"

"I'm coming, I'm coming!" Elliot called back sheepishly. He hurried into the house with Midnight bounding right beside him, already smelling something delicious even before he stepped inside. His stomach grumbled and he could feel his mouth watering. When was the last time he'd eaten again? Oh yes, breakfast. And it was already getting to be the evening. No wonder he was hungry. "So what's for dinner today?" he said, following the smells to the room where all the food was.

Avalona giggled. "We're having stew tonight." She skipped into the dining room. "Elliot's here!"

It really does seem hard to believe that she could act so happy. Elliot stood back and watched Avalona skip off into another room while he waited for whoever it was that she was talking with to appear. He didn't want to appear like he was intruding, especially since he'd come unannounced, so he decided to hang back and wait for the others to seat themselves first before he did.

A short, plump woman with blonde hair came out of the dining room. "Do come in and join us, lad. The more the merrier, you know." She smiled up at him.

Elliot returned the smile and sat down on a chair next to the table. Midnight laid down next to his chair and kept an eye out for any and all food. "Thank you for having me," he said. "You've got a nice place here. How far does your farm go, may I ask?"

The woman smiled. "It's a pleasure to have guests, especially ones as polite as you are." She handed him a bowl of stew, still steaming hot. "Our farm isn't very large. It's only as large as the meadow."
Ara smiled happily as she plopped down in the empty chair across from him. "Sheep and chickens don't take up a lot of room."
