Kaida blinked. "There are Dodongos in Hyrule? Huh, who knew." She pursed her lips thoughtfully, thinking on the implications. "I wonder how many. I hated having to fight those fire-breathing lizards, and if there are more of them in Hyrule, Giants watch us." She pulled her braid in front of her and started to undo it, unsnarling knots she found. "These some Dodongos in Termina Field, near the entrance to the Snowhead Mountains. I haven't had to enter the mountians and thus fight them to get through, but I've been tasked with retrieving some of their skin before. The same thing that makes them so blasted hard to kill is apperently valuable because it makes good bomb bags." She snorted and started to rebraid her hair. "Pays good money, though."

Donovan was paying so much attention to Kaida braiding her hair, he didn't catch much of what she said... something about hunting Dodongos. He just thought the girl had pretty hair and he couldn't understand how it looked so nice after all they had been through.
"So people had you hunt for them a lot?" He asked her. He could already guess she did, he just didn't know which she hunted more--humans or monsters. It seemed like her job might be fun, traveling from place to place gathering stuff for people, but it would probably get tiring. Donovan had no idea what his job would be. All he did was go around hunting his own food. He didn't own a single rupee. When he thought about jobs he thought entertaining people would suit him best. From what he knew, people didn't see a human summon animals like he did very often, and it would be nice for a circus or something. Summoning animals also work well in hunting. Donovan realized that if Kaida went back to being a Mercenary, they would match perfectly.

Kaida shrugged. "Fairly often. As I said, their skin is valuable, so I get paid a lot for retreiving it, and my payers get a lot for selling it. I also hunt Chu Chu, supposedly their jelly is delicious. Deku Babas make good sources of tought wood for arrows and spears and such, while Skulltullas' exoskeletons are sturdy enough for sheilds. Keese wings are good potion ingrediants, and Iron Knuckles' armor can be melted down or altered by a good blacksmith to make armor for us smaller humans." She tied off her braid and tossed it over her shoulder. "So I am usually either in the swamp or Termina Field when I'm hired to hunt monster parts." She started rubbing Zarola's head as she walked and continued to describe her profession. "Often, I'm hired to kill someone in the underground of Clock Town, such as another crime lord or a rival dealer. Sometimes I'm hired to protect against other assassins, or to steal from someone. It can be a little difficult, keeping track of what I'm supposed to do, but it is an interesting job." She looked over at Donovan. "You know, we've talked about my job more than anything else. Let's discuss something else. What do you do for a living."

"Well, I don't have a job," Donovan said as they walked. "Like, nothing at all. I have lived in the wilderness since I was 12 when Lyxa left for Hyrule. I get my meals from hunting. I do go into Clocktown every once in a while, but only for a few things, like getting clothes, but it's tough to adapt to the Town when I have lived in the wilderness all my life. Maybe when we get to Hyrule I will find a job to make some money. If Lyxa is still around maybe I could have a place to live until I can afford my own place. As I said, I don't own a rupee. What do you think you'll be doing when we're out of this cave?"

Kaida frowned thoughtfully. She hadn't considered that. After all, she had assumed that they'd visit Hyrule, and whatever lands were beyond it, then head home. She hadn't thought about staying. "I'm not sure. I know almost all the underground people in Termina, so it's easy to get a job there. Hyrule, on the other hand, will be harder, because I don't know anyone. If I keep to my profession, I'll have to start fresh." She chewed her lip as she thought about her skill set. She could track fairly easily, she was handy with a sword, she could slip almost anywhere she chose without being seen, and she could play the flute. Mostly, she was an assassin, theif, bounty hunter, or body guard, and those were what she was good at. Anything else would be difficult to do. She looked at Donovan. "I'll probably play the tourist for a while, then head home. I'm familair with Termina and know my way around it. I'm too old to try adjusting to a new landscape." She laughed at herself, as she had never applied the phrase to herself before. She wasn't even thirty yet, after all, but after spending so long in Termina, it would be incredibly difficult to adjust to a new country.

"You have a point there," Donovan said. Being in Hyrule would be really weird for him, too. Kind of like when they arrived in Labrynna. A completely foreign land where they had no idea of what they should do. They would probably still be aimlessly wandering there now if they didn't run into Malina. "I'll probably end up coming back to Termina. Especially if Lyxa is dead. She does say my family was being targeted by some monsters for some reason. I have no clue what it was, though. That would just give me more of a reason to return." He kept walking with Kaida, thinking hard. "I'm sure my grandparents are dead, and I never heard any stories about uncles or aunts. All I do know about my family is that my close family is dead, so if I ever marry someone and start a family, I will pretty much be literally beginning a family. Growing a new family tree." The thought depressed Donovan. He tried to never think about his family too hard, because he knew it would hurt. Now that he did, it made him realize how worthless his life really was. His last name wasn't even his parent's, it was from someone who had no blood of Donovan's. If he had kids, they would never know who their ancestors were. And Donovan wouldn't want to tell them about his past. He probably couldn't raise kids at all, because of his past and what he knew about his family. But if he never had kids, his family tree would stop growing, just like that. He thought about Kaida and what her future would be like. If she had kids, would they meet their parents? He didn't know about how much of her family was still living. And would she ever tell her kids about her family and her past?
"Do you think you would ever have kids?" He asked Kaida. He felt like barely anyone in the world had a past like his, and nobody will have a future like his. He suddenly felt anger towards the monsters who are said to have killed his family. In that one moment, that one carriage ride across Hyrule Field, his family, their future, and his life meaning were ended.

(lol My Hylian character Sephira is struggling with almost identical issues.)

Kaida blinked, surprised at the turn the conversation had taken. First from discussing their careers, then the difference it would be to work in a different country, to talk of family. She preferred not to think of her family, as she had no clue if they were alive or dead, nor did she really care overmuch to find out. She made plenty of enemies in her profession, and any family she had would be targeted by those enemies. Besides, she hadn't seen them since she was 13, and she had changed quite drastically since then. She'd seen all of Termina, excepting Ikana, which no one in their right mind would go to willingly, been enslaved by the pirates, and become a bounty hunter. Her parents probably thought her dead, and they wouldn't recognize their little dragon anymore.
She frowned as Donovan asked about kids. "I don't know. I've never given thought to having kids. Perhaps eventually, but it would be difficult. I make enemies in my profession, and there are several people who would try to capture anyone close to me in order to trap me. That's why I don't live in one place. I always move around, to keep from being trapped by my enemies. If I do have kids, they would have to be on the move as well, and learn how to fight while still young. That's no way for a child to live." She looked at Donovan. "If their father was willing to stay home and protect them, I'd consider it more seriously, but as is, no man has asked to court me, nor have many caught my eye with the brawn enough to protect our children, or the brains to be truly attractive to me."

"That's a good point too," Donovan said as they walked. "I'm pretty sure I'll never have kids... maybe not a wife either. I mean, who would marry a wildman?" He looked at Kaida. From what he knew, she spent lots of time in the wilderness, too. He wondered how easily she would marry someone. From her standards, it seemed near impossible she would. He guessed she would have the wildman problem too. Who would marry a man or woman who spent their life in the wilderness? Donovan realized that if he ever married, chances are he would marry Kaida. What kind of guy would she marry anyways? But he didn't see that anywhere near in his future. After walking for a long time and lighting what seemed like a thousand torches, the two met an intersection. They both looked the same, of course. Luckily there was a sign in the center. Some helpful person probably left it ages ago. It said the tunnel to the right led East to the Lost Woods, and the left led Northeast to the Gerudo Desert. The thought of the desert chilled Donovan. "I vote we go to these Woods." The forest was Donovan's natural habitat. He was a friend of the lush trees and grass, not the deadly-dry sand of the deserts. For all he knew they were much more likely to run into the undead in the desert, too.

Kaida raised an eyebrow. "Wildman?" He didn't look like a wildman, nor did he really act like one. In fact, she had dealt with men who could be considered a lot more 'wild' than Donovan. At least he didn't see her as a woman, useful for only feminine tasks. She was a dragon, after all, yet she still had to prove her viciousness over and over to men who only saw her as a helpless girl. She snorted to herself. Always think about those Giant-cursed, gutless cowards, don't I. Still, it was men like them that influenced who she would take as a mate. She didn't want a man like them, nor like their thick-skulled, moronic meatbags. She wouldn't mind someone like Donovan, but it seemed he didn't want her, judging by his reply to her.
She glanced up when they reached a crossroads. She examained both paths, and seeing no significant difference, shrugged. "Either way works for me. If we go through Lost Woods, we might want to be careful, though. A name like that usually isn't an exageration." Zarola simply kept going, ignoring both Terminians as she headed down the right path. Kaida laughed. "Guess she votes Lost Woods too."

Donovan liked how Kaida said 'wildman.' It showed that she either didn't think of him as a crazy forest dweller or she didn't understand what she meant. He hoped she meant the first. After all, it sounded like she has been in the wilderness a lot too.
Donovan laughed when Zarola passed them to the Forest path. "Follow the leader." Donovan said, walking after the panther. "Thank the Giants." Speaking of giants, Donovan didn't believe in them. It was just a saying he got used to using while living in Termina. That is because before he or Lyxa knew about any of Termina's legends, she raised him to believe in the Hylian Goddesses that she was so faithful in. When he learned about the Giants, he didn't believe in them. Nobody he knew had actually seen them. That also abolished his belief in Din, Nayru and Farore. He didn't know anyone who had seen them either, just legends. However, that made him believe something totally different. He believed that there was a single power ruling over all the lands of the world. He didn't know what it could be, but that was his only answer. He thought the Giants and Goddesses were just legends to try to find out who rules the land.

Kaida grinned and followed along after her travelling partners. "I thought you were the leader," she teased Donovan. "After all, this was your idea to begin with." She nudged him playfully. "Being showed up by a black panther. How the mighty have fallen!"

Donovan laughed at Kaida's joke. He liked how she could joke like that when they were in a seemingly endless tunnel towards a land they had never been to before. Only a rare breed of Terminans could do that. He felt a mental link between them and it made him like her more. They walked on for hours, with no sign of the tunnel's exit. Donovan was sure it was nighttime because of how many hours had passed. He didn't know how late at night it was, but he could sense that the moon has risen. He was hungry and his feet ached too, which helped sense the time. It appeared that Zarola felt the same way, because she suddenly lied down and closed her eyes with one of those cat-yawns that look like a deadly growl without any sound.
"She's playing leader again," Donovan joked, looking at Zarola. "I could use some sleep and an apple. You okay with stopping? I'm sure it's nighttime by now." After eating an apple, Donovan lied down away from the torches for some darkness. He was used to sleeping in uncomfortable places like this, but the last time he couldn't see stars over him was probably back before he could remember, as a baby with a roof over him. It felt a bit unsettling only seeing rocks over him in a room lighted with torched along the walls, but Kaida's company gave him that safety feeling from before. He smiled, happy to have met Kaida and started an adventure with her. "Good night, Kaida." He said after blowing out his torch. He would light it again on one of the lit ones the next morning.

Kaida laughed as Zarola decided it was sleep-time. "I trust her instincts. Besides, my legs are tired of walking on this rock. I'm too used to grass or snow, and I don't walk so long on the stone streets of Clock Town." She sat down and started to massage her limbs a bit before pulling out some bread and dried meat. She made a face at it. "I've travelled for years, and yet travel rations still don't taste any better." She ate it, then found a comfortable enough rock and laid down on it. "Sweet dreams, Donovan."
The following morning, or whatever time it was, Kaida woke feeling a little sore. She was used to sleeping on hard ground, yes, but rock was harder than the hard-packed dirt she usually slept on. Her back now ached, and she knew it would take a while to work the knots out of her muscles. Still, a good stretch and a bout of sword practice should loosen them up. She stood and stretched, warming up before she drew Flame from her sheathe. She took a stance, then started moving through the sequances she had learned over the years, careful to start slowly so as not to overexert herself.

Donovan must have been tired out from walking so much the day before, because he slept unusually long, it seemed. He did walk and run a lot back in Termina, but he would take breaks to play his harp or just take in the world around him. He often woke early, but today when he woke up, Kaida was already up, practicing with her sword. When he stood up, his body ached a bit from the unfamiliar hard ground. "You're pretty good with that thing, I don't ever want to get in a sword fight with you." He joked. But it was pretty much true. She looked like she had much more sword experience than him. And he wouldn't fight her anyways. All he used his sword for was catching food, and he usually knocked the prey out with a deku nut first. He had never gotten in a fight with anyone, the only time he used his sword on a human was in practice with Lyxa as a child. "I've never had a real fight before, actually." He said. He considered challenging her to a practice match, just to bond a little, but decided he would probably lose too quickly. He thought they should get going in case she challenged him. "Ready to keep going?" He said, lighting his torch on a lit one.

Kaida started as Donovan spoke. She had been so focused on her practice that she didn't notice him wake. Still, she appreciated his compliment. She knew she was the best fighter, the tournament she had been in earlier that week proved it, but it always made a difference to hear it from a friend. She sheathed her sword. "I've been in more fights than I care to count, some for business, some to protect myself from my enemies, some for enjoyment. I always keep my skills honed to a point, in case being lax costs me more than I am willing to give." She pulled some food from her pack and started eating, tossing Zarola some meat. The leopard caught it and quickly ate it, then stood and started down the path again. Kaida laughed. "Follow the leader again."
