(Yeah, most ships aren't large enough for everyone to have their own quarters. Usually every one bunks together in the hold, while the captain and sometimes the first mate have their own cabins. Each area in the hold can be separated, though, giving the semblance of having separate quarters.
And I think the latrine is usually anywhere over the side of the boat. :P)
Tyra watched as first Felix, then slowly the rest of her crew filed onto the deck of the ship for supper. She smiled as they sat down and started chatting, waiting for her to take her place. My family, she thought with pride. She was their sister, their friend, their captain. Even their mother, she felt sometimes. She had led them into danger's mouth and back out again.
Now time for the best adventure yet, she thought as she made her way to join her crew.
She stood behind her chair and waited for them to take notice of her and quiet before speaking. "Tonight we sail for a land that none in Logata have ever sailed to before. For all we know, it could easily be a myth, and the charts we have little more than a child's doodling. But they were stolen from Rhykim himself, so I doubt very much they are false. So we will sail for lands unknown, to take back riches that never before have been beheld by Logatan eyes."
She turned to the new members. "You have just joined a crew today, but more than that, you have joined a family. You are part of the crew of the Sea Queen. You will start on the bottom, as every crew member must when coming aboard a ship for the first time, but your roles will be every bit as important as anyone else's. Do your jobs, do them well, and you will find yourselves rich beyond compare when we return."
She lifted her mug to her companions. "To family. May our bonds keep us afloat, and carry us to the new lands and home again!"
